Windows Server 2022 has left mainstream support. Microsoft’s release-health notice gives October 13, 2026 as the end date, while its lifecycle table displays October 14, 2026 in Pacific Time. The difference reflects Microsoft’s date and timezone presentation; operationally, the mainstream-support transition occurred across October 13–14, 2026. Extended support now continues with security updates at no additional cost through October 14, 2031.
What changed for Windows Server 2022
The October 2026 security update was the final update delivered during Windows Server 2022’s mainstream-support period. The operating system has now entered Microsoft’s extended-support phase. Extended support is not an immediate shutdown: eligible installations continue receiving monthly security updates through October 14, 2031, without an additional charge for those updates.
Microsoft’s release-health wording says, “Windows Server 2022 will reach end of mainstream support October 13, 2026.” The lifecycle table shows October 14, 2026 because it presents the cutoff in Pacific Time. Administrators should record the transition as the October 13–14 operational cutoff rather than treat the one-day difference as two separate policy events.

The lifecycle applies across the Windows Server 2022 editions listed by Microsoft:
#1 Best Overall
- Server 2022 Standard 16 Core
- Windows Server 2022 Standard
- Windows Server 2022 Datacenter
- Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition
- Windows Server 2022 Essentials
- Windows Server 2022 containers
Containers built on the Windows Server 2022 base follow the same lifecycle dates. Inventory work should therefore include container hosts, images and deployment pipelines, not only traditional virtual machines and physical servers.
How long will security updates continue?
Extended support runs through October 14, 2031. Microsoft describes this phase as including security updates at no additional cost and continuing monthly security updates through that date. Mainstream-support benefits, such as the normal flow of new features and broader product changes, should not be assumed to continue after the October 2026 cutoff.

What is special about Datacenter: Azure Edition?
Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition has an extended hotpatch-support horizon through October 2027 for enrolled, eligible devices. Hotpatching can deliver monthly updates without a restart, which may reduce planned maintenance interruptions. It does not extend the overall Windows Server 2022 extended-support end date: the broader security-update horizon remains October 14, 2031.
Hotpatching is conditional. Verify that each server is enrolled and meets Microsoft’s eligibility requirements before relying on restart-free servicing in an operations or compliance plan.

Do you need to migrate to Windows Server 2025 now?
No immediate migration deadline was created by the October 2026 event. A correctly licensed and maintained Server 2022 deployment can remain on extended support for about five years. Migration planning is still appropriate because Microsoft identifies Windows Server 2025 as its latest Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release and the natural successor for organizations that want a newer supported baseline.
| Decision factor | Remain on Server 2022 extended support | Evaluate Server 2025 migration |
|---|---|---|
| Security-update horizon | Monthly security updates through October 14, 2031 | Uses the newer LTSC release’s own lifecycle |
| Features and innovation | Primarily a maintenance and security posture after mainstream support | Access to capabilities introduced in the newer release |
| Application and hardware compatibility | Existing validated stack remains in place | Requires testing of applications, drivers, backup tools and management systems |
| Operational downtime | Avoids a migration event, subject to normal patching and maintenance | Requires a staged migration plan and a tested rollback path |
| Licensing and Software Assurance | Confirm current entitlements and policy requirements | Validate edition, licensing and Software Assurance implications through approved Microsoft channels |
| Hotpatch availability | Datacenter: Azure Edition hotpatch support is extended through October 2027 for enrolled devices | Confirm the corresponding Server 2025 eligibility and service design separately |
Microsoft’s lifecycle notices establish the dates and servicing status, but they do not quantify migration cost, downtime or application compatibility. Those are environment-specific planning questions, not figures that can be inferred from the support announcement.

A practical post-mainstream-support checklist
- Inventory every instance. Record physical servers, virtual machines, cloud deployments, edition, build, role and owner. Include Windows Server 2022 container hosts and images.
- Verify patching. Confirm that monthly security updates are enabled, successfully deployed and monitored. Check that update failures generate an actionable alert.
- Check policy acceptance. Have security, audit and compliance owners document whether operating on extended support is acceptable through the planned retirement date.
- Identify upgrade blockers. List applications, drivers, backup agents, monitoring tools, identity integrations and hardware dependencies that must be tested against Windows Server 2025.
- Build a migration sequence. Start with noncritical workloads, define rollback procedures, and schedule production changes around recovery objectives and maintenance windows.
- Validate Azure Edition hotpatching. For Datacenter: Azure Edition, confirm enrollment and eligibility before counting on monthly updates without restarts; plan for the October 2027 hotpatch horizon.
- Plan the budget. Obtain licensing and migration-service guidance through approved Microsoft channels. The lifecycle announcement does not establish regional pricing or a named migration provider.
What administrators should do next
There is no requirement to replace every Server 2022 system immediately, but doing nothing is risky. The sensible approach is to keep extended-support systems fully patched, document the compliance decision, and use the remaining support window to test and sequence a move to Windows Server 2025 where newer capabilities, hardware support or a longer strategic runway justify it.
