If Windows Security says “Action needed” while its sections look green, check Protection history first, then read the separate Secure Boot status under Device security. Review the other protection sections and notification settings before deciding the warning is stale: green panels alone do not identify or rule out every status that can affect the app or tray indicator.
1. Read the full warning and check Protection history

Open Windows Security from Start or its tray icon. Read the complete message on the Home or Security at a glance screen, rather than relying only on the color of the tiles.

Open Protection history and expand any yellow or red cards. Microsoft says this page records actions by Microsoft Defender Antivirus, potentially unwanted apps that were removed, and key services that are turned off. It retains events for two weeks. If a card says “Threat found – action needed,” Defender detected a possible threat and is waiting for a decision. If you are unsure the file is safe, choose Quarantine; do not choose Allow on device just to clear the warning. Microsoft notes that viewing threat details may require administrator rights. Microsoft Support describes the situation as: “Microsoft Defender Antivirus detected a possible threat and needs you to make a decision on how to handle it.”
2. Check Secure Boot separately
Open Device security > Secure Boot and read the status message, not just the badge color. Microsoft’s guidance published April 2, 2026 says Secure Boot certificate status can affect the Device Security badge and Windows Security tray indicator. The panel may report states such as “fully updated,” “not yet updated,” or one requiring action. A green check means no action is needed; yellow indicates a recommendation, and red an urgent issue. Microsoft says these status enhancements are rolling out and may depend on device configuration. Read Microsoft’s Secure Boot certificate status guidance.

3. Review the other protection sections and notifications
Windows Security brings several protection features into one interface. Check the sections available on your device, especially:

Then open Settings > Manage notifications and look for a message in a relevant category. Notification options may be controlled by a work or school administrator. 4. What if everything still looks clear?
If Protection history has no actionable card, Secure Boot reports no action, and the relevant sections and notification settings show no explanation, the warning’s cause is not established by those checks alone. It could be a stale indicator, another status, or a device-specific issue; Microsoft’s cited guidance does not identify one universal cause for this exact combination.
Before seeking further help, record the exact warning text, your Windows version and build, and any details shown when you expand a Protection History card. If the device is managed by work or school, ask the administrator about policy-controlled settings instead of changing policy or registry values yourself.

Why green tiles do not settle the question
Microsoft Support defines the green icon in Windows Security this way: “A green icon means that your device is sufficiently protected and there aren’t any recommended actions.” That describes the status represented by the icon; it does not prove that every notification source or separate status is clear. Correlate the warning with Protection history, Secure Boot, the available protection sections, and management context. Microsoft’s Windows Security overview explains the icon.
