Use Windows Search when you know the app’s name; use Start when you want to browse. Press the Windows key and type an app name, or select Search on the taskbar and type it. To scan what is available, open Start and choose All apps (Windows 11) or scroll the alphabetical app list (Windows 10 and 11). On Windows 11, Settings > Apps > Installed apps provides a separate installed-app inventory when an app is not obvious in Start or Search.
All three routes are built into Windows. You do not need a separate launcher or app-search utility.
Which Windows route should you use?

The practical rule is simple: search is a name-based shortcut, Start is a browseable catalog, and Installed apps is the Windows 11 checking point when you need to verify installation.
Find an app with Windows Search
Search is the direct route when you know even part of the app’s name. Microsoft’s support instructions cover both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Method 1: use the Windows key
- Press the Windows key on the keyboard.
- Immediately type the app’s name. You do not need to click a search box first; typing after opening the Windows interface starts the search.
- Review the results and select the app entry to launch it.
For example, if you want an installed photo editor and know its name, pressing the Windows key and typing that name avoids scanning the entire app list. Search is also useful when the program’s shortcut is not currently visible on the desktop or taskbar.
Method 2: use Search on the taskbar
- Select Search on the taskbar.
- Type the app name.
- Select the matching app result.
The exact appearance of the taskbar Search control varies by Windows version and configuration. The action is the same: open Search, enter the name, and choose the app result.
When the exact name is uncertain
Start with the name you remember, then inspect the returned entries before deciding that the app is missing. An app may be listed under the product name rather than the company name, or under a shorter name than the one used in a shortcut or web page. If Search does not give you a useful result, use Start’s alphabetical list or, on Windows 11, the Installed apps page to check the catalog directly.

Search is usually the shortest sequence for a one-off launch because it avoids opening and scanning a list. Browsing is better when you are exploring what is available, helping someone else identify a program, or cannot recall the app’s precise name. Neither route installs an app; they locate entries that Windows already knows about.

Browse the Start menu’s app list
Start is the visual browsing route. Microsoft describes the app list as alphabetical, so you can scan by the first letter instead of entering a query.
Windows 11: open All apps
- Select Start on the taskbar, or press the Windows key.
- Select All apps.
- Scroll through the alphabetical list until you reach the app.
- Select the app to open it.
Windows 11 also places commonly used apps above the alphabetical list in Start. That area can provide a shorter route for an app you use regularly, while All apps remains the complete browsing view documented by Microsoft.
Windows 10: scroll the alphabetical list
- Select the Start button or press the Windows key.
- Scroll through the alphabetical app list.
- Select the program when you find it.
Windows 10’s Start presentation is not identical to Windows 11’s. Do not expect the same button placement or panel arrangement on both systems; follow the label shown on your own Start menu.

Browse when you do not know the app’s name
Browsing is useful when a colleague tells you that a tool is installed but cannot remember its exact title, or when you want to see the applications available on a shared PC. Work through the first-letter groups in order and look for the publisher or product wording you recognize. If the list is long, Search is faster once you recover the name.

Check the installed-app list in Windows 11 Settings
When an app does not appear where you expect, Windows 11 offers a dedicated inventory in Settings. This is a verification route rather than a replacement for Search or Start.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
Review the entries on that page. If the app appears there, Windows 11 recognizes it as installed even if you did not spot its shortcut in Start. You can then return to Search and type the name to launch it, or use Start’s app list to locate its entry.
If it does not appear in Installed apps, check that you are looking for the correct product name and that you are on the Windows 11 computer where the installation was performed. The documented Settings route is specific to Windows 11; Windows 10 instructions in Microsoft’s app-finding guidance rely on Start and Search rather than this exact Installed apps path.
Find an app and pin it to the taskbar
For an app you open often, use Search once and then pin the result so you do not have to search every time.

- Open Search from the taskbar or press the Windows key and type the app name.
- Locate the app result.
- Use the result’s available context-menu command to pin the app to the taskbar.
- After it is pinned, select its taskbar icon whenever you want to reopen it.
The pinning step is an optional convenience, not a different installation method. If you later remove the pin, the app remains installed; you can find it again through Search, Start, or Windows 11’s Installed apps list.
Windows 10 and Windows 11: what changes?

The underlying choice does not change: type a name for a direct lookup, or open the alphabetical list to browse. What changes is the label and placement of the controls. When writing instructions for another person, identify whether the computer runs Windows 10 or Windows 11 and use the matching labels.

Search returns no obvious match
- Confirm the spelling and try the part of the name you know.
- Try the product name rather than the company name, or the shorter name commonly used for the app.
- Open Start and use the alphabetical list instead of relying on a remembered search term.
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and inspect the list directly.
These checks distinguish a naming problem from an installation problem without requiring another utility.

That is expected: Start and the taskbar are separate access locations. Search for the app and use the available pin command if you want a permanent taskbar shortcut. Pinning changes access, not whether the program is installed.

The Start menu looks different from a guide
First identify the Windows version. Microsoft’s app-finding guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but their Start arrangements are different. A Windows 11 guide that says All apps may not match a Windows 10 screen that presents the alphabetical list directly. Use the visible Start labels for your version rather than assuming the controls are in the same position.
You need proof that the program is installed
On Windows 11, use the Installed apps page as the explicit check. If the entry is present, Windows lists it as installed even if its Start location is not obvious. If it is absent, verify the name and the computer you are checking before concluding that installation is missing.
Examples: choosing the fastest path
You know the exact program name
Press the Windows key, type the name, and select the result. This avoids opening the full alphabetical catalog and is the shortest documented route for a known app.

You are checking a Windows 11 PC before helping someone
Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps to inspect the installed list. Once you identify the exact entry, use Search to launch it or locate it in Start.
You open the same app every day
Find it with Search and pin it to the taskbar. Future launches then use the pinned icon instead of a new search.
Keep the three routes straight
- Windows Search: name in, matching result out. Choose it when speed matters and you know what you want.
- Start: an alphabetical browseable list. Choose it when you want to scan or cannot recall the exact name.
- Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11): an installation check. Choose it when the app is not appearing where expected.
