Windows’ Healthy label does not mean an SSD has no errors. It means Windows considers the disk to be functioning normally according to the health signal it can read. NVMe telemetry reports several separate conditions—critical warnings, spare capacity, estimated life used, temperature, media errors and error-log entries—so a reassuring headline can coexist with alarming numbers.

Why the Windows label and SSD numbers can disagree

Microsoft’s disk status definition is simple: Healthy means “the disk is functioning normally.” That status is not a complete dump of the drive’s health data. An NVMe device exposes a health structure with independent fields, and a monitoring utility may show those fields even when Windows displays no headline warning.

There is also a coverage limit that is easy to miss: Windows’ built-in Storage health view monitors NVM/NVMe SSDs, but not SATA SSDs or hard disk drives. A SATA drive can therefore have important SMART information that does not appear in the Windows health page.

What each NVMe number actually means

Field What it measures How to interpret it
Critical Warning Bit flags for serious conditions, including spare capacity below its threshold, overheating, degraded NVM-subsystem reliability, read-only media or volatile-memory-backup failure. Any active flag deserves immediate backup and investigation. It is more important than a general “Healthy” label.
Available Spare A normalized 0–100% estimate of remaining spare capacity, compared with the drive’s own spare threshold. Check both the percentage and the threshold. A low value or a warning that spare is below threshold indicates reduced protection against worn or failing NAND.
PercentageUsed A vendor-specific estimate of the percentage of NVM subsystem life consumed, based on actual use and the manufacturer’s predicted life. It is an endurance estimate, not a universal failure countdown. No single percentage predicts failure for every SSD model.
Temperature The device’s composite temperature. Interpret it against the model’s specifications and workload. A high reading matters especially when accompanied by throttling or a critical-warning flag.
Media/data-integrity errors Reported problems reading or maintaining data integrity. Errors that are present or increasing are a stronger replacement signal than a favorable life estimate.
Error-log entries Events recorded in the NVMe error information log. Review the entries and their trend. One historical entry is not automatically proof of imminent failure, but repeated or accumulating entries require investigation.

Percentage Used is not a health score

NVMe’s PercentageUsed field is explicitly vendor-specific. It estimates how much of the manufacturer’s predicted NVM life has been consumed; it does not certify that every NAND cell, controller or interface is error-free. Two drives with the same percentage can have very different error histories, temperatures and firmware behavior.

Conversely, a low percentage does not clear a drive that reports media errors, degraded reliability or a critical warning. Treat the percentage as one endurance indicator alongside the failure flags and error counters, not as the verdict.

What to check when the numbers look scary

  1. Back up first. Copy irreplaceable files to another device or service immediately if you see a warning, read-only behavior, crashes, corruption or errors. Do not wait for Windows to change its label.
  2. Identify the interface. Determine whether the drive is NVMe or SATA. Windows’ Storage health page does not monitor SATA SSDs or HDDs, so a SATA drive requires a SMART-capable reader or the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility.
  3. Record the exact identity. Note the model number and firmware revision. SMART attributes, thresholds and vendor calculations differ between models.
  4. Read the complete set of fields. Check Critical Warning, Available Spare and its threshold, PercentageUsed, temperature, media/data-integrity errors, error-log entries and whether the device has entered a read-only state.
  5. Use model-specific documentation. Compare the readings with the exact manufacturer’s utility, datasheet or support guidance. Generic internet cutoffs can misclassify a drive because vendors encode and scale attributes differently.
  6. Watch the trend. Record the values after a normal workload and check whether error counts, temperature or spare capacity are changing. A stable endurance estimate with no warnings is a different situation from accumulating errors.

When replacement is the prudent choice

Plan replacement after securing a backup if reliability is reported as degraded, the media has become read-only, Available Spare is below its threshold, Critical Warning is active or media/data-integrity errors are accumulating. Microsoft describes degraded reliability as significant media-related errors or an internal error in the NVM subsystem. In a read-only state, existing data may still be accessible, but new writes are blocked.

Choose a replacement only after checking the computer’s requirements: M.2 keying, supported PCIe generation, capacity limits, physical clearance, thermal solution and operating-system support. An NVMe SSD replacement drive must match the system’s connector and protocol; an M.2 shape alone does not guarantee compatibility.

When monitoring is enough

If the drive has no Critical Warning, no degraded-reliability or read-only state, no media/data-integrity errors and no worsening error log, a percentage figure by itself is not a reason to discard it. Keep current backups, monitor the same fields periodically and investigate any change in behavior or telemetry.

Do not compare two readings without controlling for context. The useful comparison axes are interface (NVMe or SATA), exact model and firmware, Critical Warning state, Available Spare and threshold, the vendor’s PercentageUsed definition, media-error count, temperature, read-only status, warranty and whether the monitoring tool has direct device passthrough.

Why a third-party utility can show more than Windows

Windows presents a simplified status and, for its Storage health feature, a limited class of devices. A SMART/NVMe utility can query the controller’s health structure directly and display fields that are not represented in the headline status. That additional detail is useful, but the utility must be able to pass through the device correctly; some USB enclosures, RAID layers and virtualized storage paths hide or alter SMART data.

The practical verdict

Read “Healthy” as “Windows has not detected a condition that changes its headline status,” not as a guarantee that every SSD subsystem is perfect. Back up first, identify the interface and model, then prioritize Critical Warning, degraded reliability, low Available Spare, read-only state and media/data-integrity errors over a single PercentageUsed number. If those failure indicators are absent and the readings are stable, continued monitoring with reliable backups is reasonable.
