The “No Operating System Found” message means the computer did not find a bootable Windows installation through its current boot path. It does not prove that Windows or your personal files have been erased. First disconnect unnecessary external storage and check whether the computer’s firmware detects its internal drive. If it does, try Windows Recovery Environment’s Startup Repair before considering more disruptive recovery options.
What the error means—and what to check first
The message can appear when the computer selects the wrong boot device or entry, when firmware settings do not match the Windows installation, when the internal drive is not detected, or when Windows startup configuration is damaged. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis of any particular computer.
- Shut down and disconnect nonessential devices. Remove external USB storage, memory cards, and external drives, then start the computer again. Leave essential keyboard and mouse devices connected.
- Open the firmware setup or boot menu. Use the key shown by the computer maker; common keys include F2, F10, F12, Esc, and Del, but the correct key and menu vary by model. If needed, consult the maker’s instructions.
- Check whether the internal HDD or SSD is listed. If it is, inspect the boot order and select the expected Windows entry. On many UEFI installations, that entry is named Windows Boot Manager.
- Note existing settings before changing anything. Do not randomly switch between UEFI and Legacy/CSM, change Secure Boot or SATA mode, alter partition flags, or change disk layout. A setting that does not match the existing installation can stop Windows from starting.
A community response on Microsoft Q&A discusses boot priority and UEFI/CSM settings, but those suggestions are not a universal fix. The right configuration depends on how Windows was installed and on the particular computer.
If firmware does not detect the internal drive
If the drive is absent from firmware setup, rebuilding Windows boot files is unlikely to address the underlying problem. The drive, its connection, or the computer may need hardware diagnosis; the error alone does not establish which component has failed.

- Replacing a failed drive may make the computer usable again, but it does not recover files from the old drive. Any replacement must fit the computer’s supported interface and physical size.
If firmware detects the drive: open Windows Recovery Environment
Windows may open its recovery tools automatically after startup problems. If it does not, use Windows installation media made on another working PC to boot the affected computer into recovery.
- Prepare a USB drive. Microsoft says a USB drive of at least 8 GB can be used to create Windows installation media. Use a blank drive or copy its contents elsewhere first: creating the media erases the selected USB drive.
- Create the media using Microsoft’s current instructions for the Windows version offered. The affected computer’s boot menu and firmware settings determine how to start from USB.
- Boot the affected computer from the USB drive. At Windows Setup, choose Repair your PC to reach recovery tools. Do not choose the installation option if your goal is to open recovery.
Microsoft’s current recovery instructions principally cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Recovery menus, media, and manufacturer-specific steps can differ on Windows 8 and Windows 7, so check the computer maker’s documentation if the screens do not match.

Run Startup Repair

Microsoft describes Startup Repair as a tool that checks for and attempts to fix common startup problems, including some boot-configuration problems. It may not resolve every cause of this message.

Choose the next step by the drive and your data
| Situation | Reasonable next step | Important consequence or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Firmware does not list the internal drive | Seek hardware diagnosis; prioritize data recovery if files are important and unbacked up. | Windows boot-file repair will not fix a drive the firmware cannot detect. Replacing storage does not retrieve files from the old drive. |
| Firmware lists the drive; Windows does not start | Try Startup Repair in WinRE. | It attempts to fix common startup problems but is not guaranteed to succeed; an encrypted PC may require its BitLocker recovery key. |
| A recent change preceded the failure and WinRE offers a suitable restore point | Consider System Restore. | Recovery options can affect system state and files differently. Review the specific option before proceeding. |
| Automatic repair fails | Review Microsoft’s recovery choices, or get qualified help if the drive or important files may be at risk. | Resetting, reinstalling, or performing a clean installation can result in data loss. Protect files that are not backed up before selecting an option. |
Microsoft lists System Restore and other recovery options for Windows that will not start. Read the description of the exact option offered on your system before confirming it, especially if you do not have a current backup.
Why generic boot-command recipes can be risky
Commands copied from a forum or video are not a universal repair sequence for Windows 10, 8, and 7. In recovery, drive letters can differ from those used while Windows is running, and the appropriate repair depends in part on whether the installation uses UEFI/GPT or Legacy BIOS/MBR. Community recommendations for particular cases do not establish that the same commands are safe or suitable for every computer. If the drive is not detected, the recovery environment cannot find a Windows installation, or you are unsure which configuration applies, stop before changing partitions or boot data.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that after October 14, 2025, it no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. That support change is separate from diagnosing this startup error: it does not explain why the PC failed to find a bootable installation.
