If Windows suddenly says it is no longer activated because of a hardware change, that message does not prove you replaced a component. It means Windows cannot match the current activation state to the license it expects for the device. Check the exact error code, installed edition, and license before assuming hardware failed or buying another copy.
What does the “hardware changed” message actually mean?
Windows activation checks whether a product key or digital entitlement matches the device’s hardware configuration. Microsoft describes significant hardware changes as one possible reason activation may stop matching, but its error message is a system report—not evidence of what you did or a diagnosis of a particular PC. Microsoft’s public guidance does not explain why the warning might appear after years without an observed hardware change. See Microsoft’s Activate Windows explanation.
What to check before trying to reactivate
Record the code and edition
Open Settings > System > Activation. Note the full activation status, the error code if one is shown, and whether the installed edition is Windows Home or Pro. The code points to a recovery route; it does not by itself prove that a physical component was changed.
- 0xC004F211: Microsoft describes this as “Windows reported that the hardware of your device has changed.” This is the reported activation condition, not proof that you changed the PC.
- 0xC004F213: Windows reported that no product key was found. Check whether a digital license or original key is associated with this installation.

Confirm that Windows matches your license
The installed edition must match the edition covered by your license. For example, a Windows 11 Home digital license will not activate Windows 11 Pro. If the editions do not match, follow Microsoft’s guidance for moving to the edition your license covers before pursuing other fixes; see Windows activation error help.
Identify the kind of license and who manages the PC
Consider whether Windows came preinstalled with the computer, was bought as a retail license, or is managed by an employer or school. The available recovery route can depend on the license and account tied to it. If the device is organization-managed, contact that organization’s IT support rather than buying a consumer license. Microsoft’s public activation pages do not settle every license-contract or organization-specific case.

How to reactivate Windows without buying a new license
Run the Activation troubleshooter
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot. Microsoft says this option is available when Windows is not activated.
- If the digital license is linked to a Microsoft account, sign in with that same account. If offered, choose I changed hardware on this device recently and follow the prompts to select the device and reactivate.

If you bought Windows with a product key, or have a key previously used on this device, Microsoft’s activation-error guidance says you can enter it through Activation settings. Keep the key private; do not post it in a forum or send it to an unverified support contact.

Which recovery route should you try?

When is buying another Windows license appropriate?
Microsoft says a new license may be needed in some cases, but it should be a fallback—not the first response to a message that may reflect a mismatch. First confirm the installed edition, try the troubleshooter with the Microsoft account associated with the digital license, and check for the original key. If you establish that the existing license cannot be recovered, make sure any replacement is for the edition you actually need. A purchase alone does not establish or correct the cause of a hardware-change report.
