Use Windows Sandbox for a fast, disposable check of an installer, launcher, or first-run experience. Use a Hyper-V virtual machine when you need a persistent Windows guest, repeatable configuration, or manual rollback. Neither option is automatically the right tool for measuring game frame rates or reproducing a player’s physical gaming PC. Virtualized graphics, drivers, storage, networking, and platform services can differ from the host, so performance conclusions require a deliberately configured test environment.

Microsoft’s documentation establishes the lifecycle, graphics requirements, and resource trade-offs of Sandbox and Hyper-V, but it does not provide a universal game-performance winner or compatibility results for named titles. Choose according to what you are trying to learn from the test.

Quick answer: choose by the test objective

What you need to test Better starting point Reason
Whether an installer, launcher, or game starts in a clean Windows session Windows Sandbox It starts a fresh, isolated environment and discards the instance when you close it.
A test that must retain files, settings, patches, or a configured guest OS Hyper-V virtual machine VM changes persist until you revert or otherwise remove them, allowing repeatable setup.
Frame-rate, latency, or graphics-quality measurement Neither by default You must first verify the graphics path and decide whether a virtualized test represents the real target system.
An unfamiliar installer that does not need internet access Sandbox with networking disabled The standard Sandbox configuration enables networking and clipboard sharing; deliberate isolation reduces exposure.
A test that needs a carefully controlled network or host-file exchange Either, with an explicit configuration Both choices can be made safer or more useful by controlling networking, mapped folders, and the data you copy in.

This is a purpose-based decision, not a claim that one product runs games faster. Microsoft’s official pages do not publish a game benchmark comparing Sandbox with Hyper-V.

What Windows Sandbox actually provides

A disposable Windows session

Windows Sandbox is a lightweight, isolated desktop intended for running applications and testing software. When you close the Sandbox, its software, files, and state are removed. You can therefore inspect a setup process without leaving the installed game or its launcher on the host.

There is one important version qualification: beginning with Windows 11 version 22H2, data survives restarts initiated from inside the Sandbox. That does not make the environment persistent across closing it; closing still discards the instance. A reboot during a multi-stage installer can therefore work, while a later session starts clean.

Sandbox uses the Hyper-V hypervisor and a dynamically generated Windows image rather than a conventional, permanently stored guest installation. Microsoft’s architecture documentation describes memory sharing and a lightweight design, but “lightweight” does not mean that every game behaves like it does on bare metal.

Virtualized graphics, not guaranteed direct GPU access

Sandbox can use a virtual GPU (vGPU). Hardware-accelerated rendering requires a compatible GPU and graphics drivers using Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) 2.5 or newer, according to Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox architecture documentation. If the hardware or driver does not satisfy those conditions, or if vGPU is disabled, Sandbox uses Microsoft’s Windows Advanced Rasterization Platform (WARP), which renders through the CPU in software.

A desktop that appears normally, or an installer that opens, is not proof that the game is receiving representative hardware acceleration. Treat the active graphics path as a prerequisite to any graphics conclusion.

What a Hyper-V virtual machine adds

Persistent state and controlled rollback

A conventional Hyper-V VM is a complete guest operating system with virtual disks, settings, applications, and user data. Changes remain until you deliberately revert, replace, or delete them. That persistence is useful when you need to install a launcher once, apply a particular driver or patch, and repeat a test under the same guest state.

Persistence also creates maintenance work. A VM consumes storage for its virtual disk and needs updates, snapshots or checkpoints, backups, and cleanup. It is a managed test machine, not an instant throwaway desktop.

GPU partitioning is a separate capability

Hyper-V has a documented GPU-partitioning feature, but it requires compatible hardware and configuration. It is not automatic direct access to the host GPU, and a VM does not become equivalent to a physical gaming PC merely because Hyper-V is enabled. Consult Microsoft’s GPU partitioning documentation for the supported design and prerequisites before planning a graphics test around it.

Why “testing a game” can mean three different things

1. Installer and launcher validation

If the question is “Does this installer run, create its files, and open the launcher?”, a disposable Sandbox is usually the efficient first pass. You can start with a clean session, observe prerequisite installers, and close the environment without uninstalling anything from the host.

Record what the test actually proves: for example, that the installer completed and the launcher reached its sign-in screen under that Sandbox configuration. It does not prove that every driver, peripheral, anti-cheat component, store entitlement, or online service will work on a player’s machine.

2. First-run and configuration checks

Sandbox is also useful for checking first launch, configuration-file creation, resolution menus, and whether a game reaches its main menu. If the game or launcher requires a restart, Windows 11 22H2 and later can retain data through that in-Sandbox restart, but closing the window still resets the test.

A Hyper-V VM is preferable when you need to preserve a downloaded patch, a user profile, a mod tool, or a particular sequence of settings between sessions. The cost is the extra setup and resource allocation.

3. Performance and compatibility measurement

Frame rate, frame-time consistency, input latency, shader compilation behavior, driver regressions, and graphics-feature support are different questions. A virtualized graphics path may differ materially from the host’s gaming path. Microsoft’s reviewed documentation does not establish game-specific frame rates or a universal compatibility result for Sandbox versus Hyper-V.

For a meaningful measurement, define the target first: are you evaluating a virtual desktop deployment, a cloud-like guest, or the performance of the physical gaming system? If the target is the physical system, run the benchmark on the host rather than treating a VM result as a substitute. If the target is a VM deployment, document the hypervisor, vGPU or WARP path, guest resolution, driver versions, CPU and memory allocation, and background load.

Requirements and resource planning

Hyper-V host requirements

Microsoft’s Hyper-V system requirements list these baseline conditions for Hyper-V on Windows:

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise (edition availability is a requirement, not a performance guarantee).
  • A 64-bit processor with Second Level Address Translation (SLAT).
  • VM Monitor Mode extensions.
  • Hardware-assisted virtualization enabled in the BIOS or UEFI firmware.
  • Hardware-enforced data execution prevention.
  • Enough memory for Windows, the Hyper-V management components, the guest, and other applications running at the same time.

Microsoft cites at least 4 GB of RAM as a general planning baseline. That figure is a platform requirement guideline, not a claim that 4 GB is sufficient for a modern game, a gaming guest, or the host operating system while a VM is running. A game test normally needs more headroom, but the appropriate amount depends on the guest, the title, and the host workload.

Sandbox graphics requirements

For hardware-accelerated Sandbox rendering, verify a compatible GPU and WDDM 2.5-or-newer graphics drivers. Without that path, WARP provides CPU-based software rendering. Disabling vGPU in a configuration file also selects software rendering, which can be useful for isolating a graphics dependency but is not representative of hardware-accelerated play.

Storage, CPU, and memory trade-offs

Sandbox avoids maintaining a conventional guest disk and is quick to discard, but it still shares host CPU, memory, storage bandwidth, and graphics resources while active. A Hyper-V VM requires a virtual disk and an allocated share of host resources; allocating too little can make the guest unusable, while allocating too much can starve the host and distort results. Keep the host workload consistent when comparing runs.

How to run a safer Windows Sandbox test

Step 1: Define the smallest useful test

  1. Write down whether you are checking installation, first launch, a restart, a launcher workflow, or a graphics feature.
  2. Decide whether the test needs internet access, host files, or clipboard transfer. Remove each dependency that is not essential.
  3. Choose a clean test account or test data that does not contain personal credentials.

Step 2: Review the default exposure

Microsoft’s documented default setup enables networking and clipboard redirection. Networking can expose an untrusted application to the internal network, while clipboard sharing can move data between the host and Sandbox. Read the Windows Sandbox configuration guidance before opening an unfamiliar installer.

Step 3: Create a .wsb configuration when defaults are not appropriate

A Windows Sandbox configuration file can disable networking or vGPU, set memory, and map selected host folders. For example, this configuration disables network access and vGPU, and assigns a memory value:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
<Configuration>
  <Networking>Disable</Networking>
  <vGPU>Disable</vGPU>
  <MemoryInMB>4096</MemoryInMB>
</Configuration>

Save the file with a .wsb extension and open it to start the configured session. The 4096 MB value is an example allocation, not a gaming recommendation. Increase or reduce it only after considering host capacity and the application’s needs.

If you must provide files, map the narrowest possible host folder and make it read-only where practical. A mapped folder can expose host files to software running inside Sandbox; a writable mapping also gives that software a path to modify host data.

Step 4: Observe and record the result

  1. Start the Sandbox and confirm that the expected network and folder settings are in effect.
  2. Copy in only the installer or test files required for the defined task.
  3. Note installation errors, reboot requests, launcher behavior, sign-in requirements, and whether the game reaches the specific checkpoint you chose.
  4. Do not interpret a successful desktop or menu display as a frame-rate result unless you have verified the graphics path and designed a repeatable benchmark.
  5. Close the Sandbox when finished. Its files, installed software, and state are discarded.

How to use Hyper-V for a repeatable guest test

Step 1: Confirm the host before creating a VM

  1. Check the Windows edition against Microsoft’s Hyper-V requirements.
  2. Confirm virtualization is enabled in firmware and that the processor exposes SLAT and VM Monitor Mode extensions.
  3. Plan memory and storage for both host and guest; do not use the 4 GB baseline as a promise of game performance.
  4. If graphics acceleration is central to the test, verify whether your hardware and configuration support the Hyper-V GPU-partitioning design rather than assuming it is available.

Step 2: Build a known guest state

Create a Windows VM in Hyper-V Manager, install the guest operating system, apply the same update and driver policy you intend to test, and record the guest configuration. Keep the virtual disk, memory allocation, virtual processors, display settings, and network design documented so a later run can reproduce them.

Install the launcher and game only after the baseline guest is ready. If the test requires a clean install, preserve a clean baseline before adding the software. If it requires a patched or modded state, preserve that state as a separate checkpoint or copy according to your change-control practice.

Step 3: Revert deliberately

Because VM changes persist, decide when to revert rather than assuming a close action resets anything. A retained baseline lets you repeat an installer test; a retained configured guest lets you investigate a later launch or patch failure without rebuilding the operating system.

Graphics and performance: a practical test protocol

Verify the rendering path first

  • For Sandbox, establish whether the session is using vGPU hardware acceleration or WARP software rendering.
  • For Hyper-V, document whether the guest uses a supported GPU-partitioning configuration; ordinary VM operation does not imply direct GPU access.
  • Record the Windows version, guest version, graphics-driver version, resolution, and memory and CPU allocations.

Separate functional and performance conclusions

“The game opened” is a functional observation. “The game delivers representative frame times” is a performance conclusion requiring controlled measurement. Keep those statements separate in test notes and reports.

Use a host benchmark when the target is the host

If your goal is to tell a player how the game performs on their physical Windows installation, test on the physical installation. A VM can answer whether a virtualized deployment meets its own requirement, but it cannot automatically stand in for the host’s graphics driver, scheduling, anti-cheat integration, peripherals, or storage path.

Networking, clipboard, and mapped-folder security

Sandbox is isolated, but its documented defaults are not maximum isolation. Networking and clipboard redirection are enabled in the standard configuration. Disable networking when the installer does not need it, and avoid copying passwords, tokens, personal documents, or executable files through the shared clipboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mapped folders deserve special care. Give an untrusted program a read-only folder containing only the files needed for the test. Do not map a whole user profile, a source-code tree with write access, or a folder containing valuable documents. If the software needs an output location, use a disposable directory and inspect its contents after the session rather than exposing a live working folder.

These controls reduce exposure; they do not turn an untrusted program into a harmless one. Use a dedicated test machine or organizational security process for software that may be malicious or subject to licensing and network restrictions.

Troubleshooting decision tree

The game or installer will not start in Sandbox

  • First determine whether the failure occurs before or after the launcher opens.
  • Check whether the test needs network access, a restart, a service, or a platform component that is unavailable in the isolated session.
  • Verify the graphics path. A system using WARP may behave differently from one using vGPU.
  • Repeat once in a fresh Sandbox to exclude state left by the previous attempt; closing the session is the reset operation.

The guest is slow or the result is inconsistent in Hyper-V

  • Check host memory pressure and CPU contention while the VM runs.
  • Confirm that the guest configuration has not changed between runs.
  • Check whether the intended GPU-partitioning configuration is actually present instead of assuming the VM has hardware acceleration.
  • Keep Windows and driver versions fixed while comparing runs.

You need to repeat a test but the state disappeared

That is expected after closing Sandbox. Recreate the session from the same configuration file and reinstall the test software, or move the workflow to a persistent Hyper-V VM when retaining state is itself a requirement.

The test needs files from the host

Use a narrowly scoped mapped folder and prefer read-only access. If the files are not essential, do not map them; reducing host exposure is safer than troubleshooting an unnecessary integration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decision checklist

  • Choose Sandbox when a clean, short-lived session is more valuable than retained state; the test is mainly installation or first-run behavior; and you can accept its virtualized graphics and app constraints.
  • Choose Hyper-V when you need a maintained guest, repeatable updates and settings, retained files, or manual rollback; budget the host resources and setup time.
  • Choose the physical host when the question is the host’s actual frame rate, latency, driver behavior, or player-facing gaming experience.
  • Pause and redesign when the test requires a specific GPU feature, anti-cheat or platform integration, peripheral, or network condition that the selected virtual environment does not reproduce. The official documentation reviewed here does not establish title-specific compatibility, so label the result as a limitation of the test environment rather than a universal game verdict.

Bottom line

Windows Sandbox is the better first tool for a quick, disposable installer or launcher check. A Hyper-V VM is better for a persistent, repeatable guest that you can configure and roll back. For game performance, neither is a default winner: verify the graphics path, define the target environment, and report only what the test actually demonstrates.
