A single restart can be a normal part of installing a Windows update. If the PC keeps restarting, cannot return to Windows, or shows a recurring stop code, treat it as a startup or crash problem—not simply an update that needs more time. First note whether you can reach the sign-in screen or desktop and record any error text; then choose the least disruptive step that fits what you see.

First, identify what kind of restart is happening

Before changing anything, note the Windows version, the update name or KB number if visible, whether the PC reaches sign-in or the desktop, and any error message, stop code, or module name. These details help distinguish an update that completed after one restart from a recurring failure.

  • Windows returns to normal after one restart: Check Windows Update history and the current update status before using recovery tools.
  • The PC repeatedly restarts before Windows loads: Use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) options below.
  • A blue or black screen displays a stop code: Record the code and any module name. The cause could involve hardware, a driver, or software; the timing alone does not prove the update caused it.

Do not interrupt an installation that visibly appears to be progressing based only on how long it has taken. There is no universal safe waiting period established for every device and update.

If Windows starts, remove the recent update only if it fits the timing

If Windows loads and the trouble began immediately after a recent update, Microsoft’s targeted option is to uninstall that update. On supported versions, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, then select the relevant update. Windows 10 menu labels may differ. See Microsoft’s instructions for uninstalling a Windows update.

Some updates cannot be uninstalled. Removing a security update can also leave the PC exposed to the issue that update addressed, so weigh that risk before proceeding. For Windows 11, Microsoft advises trying to reinstall the current Windows version first where applicable.

If the update reports an error or appears incomplete but Windows still runs, try Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting steps. Some advanced procedures involve command-line work and are not the best first move for every reader.

If Windows will not start or keeps looping, use WinRE

Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) may open automatically after repeated failed starts. If it does not, access it through the recovery or advanced startup options available on your device. Microsoft documents the entry routes and available tools in Recovery options in Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. This tool scans for common startup problems, including some missing or damaged system files and boot configuration issues. It may report what it found if it cannot repair the problem; it is not a guaranteed fix for every restart loop. See Microsoft’s Startup Repair guidance.
  2. If the problem followed a recent update, return to Troubleshoot > Advanced options and choose Uninstall Updates. Select the available update-removal option that matches the update and follow the prompts. Some updates cannot be removed.

If the PC is encrypted with BitLocker, locate the recovery key before starting recovery actions that request it. Back up important files when you can. Microsoft warns that some recovery options can cause data loss.

If a stop code appears, capture it before troubleshooting further

A recurring blue-screen or black-screen failure may stem from hardware, drivers, or software. Write down the stop code and any named module rather than assuming the latest update is the sole cause. Microsoft’s unexpected restart and stop-code guidance suggests basic checks such as removing recently added hardware and using Safe Mode to continue troubleshooting.

If Windows repeatedly fails and automatically reboots before you can read the error, WinRE’s Startup Settings includes Disable automatic restart on system failure. This can keep the error visible long enough to record it. Find the route through Windows Startup Settings.

Know the data impact before choosing reset or reinstall

Reset and reinstall are more disruptive than removing a recent update or trying Startup Repair. Depending on the reset choice, Windows may keep personal files or remove everything. Reinstalling Windows from installation media removes everything, so do not begin without understanding the consequences and backup state. If you need to create installation media, Microsoft’s recovery options guide describes that route. A USB drive is a means of creating or using recovery media, not a fix on its own.

If the PC belongs to a workplace or school and these steps do not resolve the issue, contact its IT department before resetting or reinstalling Windows.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 details

Microsoft’s cited recovery and update-removal guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, though labels and availability can vary by version. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 devices continue to work, but no longer receive free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.

Some Windows 11 devices running version 24H2 or later may offer Quick Machine Recovery after repeated boot failures if the feature is enabled. It is conditional, not a recovery option available on every PC. Microsoft also describes a one-restart-per-month update behavior for specified Windows 11 versions for updates released on and after July 28, 2026. That scheduling behavior does not explain why a particular PC restarted unexpectedly.
