When Remote Desktop won’t connect, start with the remote PC rather than changing firewall settings at random. The host must run an eligible Windows edition, Remote Desktop must be enabled, and the client must use the host’s current PC name and a permitted account. Only after those checks should you investigate network reachability, firewall policy, or a recent Windows update.
This order separates a basic setup problem from a blocked network path and from an operating-system issue. It also avoids the risky shortcut of turning off Windows Firewall.
Use this order when Remote Desktop won’t connect
Work through the checks in sequence. Stop when you find a failed prerequisite; later tests cannot correct an unsupported host or an incorrect computer name.

1. Confirm the remote PC can host Remote Desktop
Check the Windows edition
Microsoft’s Remote Desktop guidance states: “The PC you want to connect to (the remote PC) must be running Windows Pro edition of Windows.” The device you connect from can run any Windows edition or a different operating system. Therefore, changing the client application will not make an ineligible host accept incoming Remote Desktop sessions.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
- Go to the remote PC in person, or use another support method that already works.
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Read the Windows specifications section and note the edition.
- If the edition is not Windows Pro, treat that as the blocking condition rather than continuing with firewall experiments.
This check concerns the host, not the computer, tablet, or phone initiating the connection. A non-Windows client is not automatically disqualified; the remote PC’s edition is the requirement established by Microsoft’s setup instructions.
Turn on Remote Desktop and record the host name
On an eligible remote PC, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop. Turn Remote Desktop on and note the PC name displayed on that page. Copy the name carefully; it is the identifier the client should use.
Do not substitute a remembered nickname or an old name from a previous setup. If the PC was renamed, a saved connection can continue trying the wrong destination even though Remote Desktop is enabled correctly.

Remote Desktop still requires an account that is allowed to sign in to the host. From the client, enter the host’s current PC name and use the expected account credentials. A correct name with an account that is not permitted to sign in can look like a general connection failure, so record which account was intended before asking an administrator to investigate.
2. Check the client’s connection details
Use the exact PC name shown on the host
Return to the host’s Settings > System > Remote Desktop page and compare its displayed PC name with the destination saved or typed on the client. Correct one character at a time, including hyphens and numbers. If you have several similarly named computers, confirm that the name belongs to the machine that is powered on and connected to the network you expect.
Separate credential problems from destination problems
Use the account you normally expect to access the remote PC. If another account is supplied automatically by the client, replace it with the intended one rather than assuming that a cached identity is valid. Keep the distinction clear: the PC name determines which host is contacted; the account determines who is attempting to sign in.
Check whether the host is available
The remote PC must be powered on and connected to a network path available to the client. A sleeping, shut-down, disconnected, or relocated computer cannot accept a new session simply because Remote Desktop remains enabled in its settings. If the host is in an office or behind an organization’s access path, verify that you are using the required company connection before changing local settings.

3. Determine whether the network is the actual cause
Test the client generally before focusing on RDP
A client can show that it is connected to Wi-Fi while a particular application or firewall still prevents the traffic it needs. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance explicitly treats a specific-app problem and a firewall as possible explanations when the Wi-Fi status appears connected.
- Check whether ordinary network activity on the client works.
- Determine whether other devices on the same network can reach the host, if your organization permits that test.
- Compare the result with another network path only when it is safe and authorized to do so.
- Record whether the failure affects one host, several hosts, or all network applications.
If every network function is failing, troubleshoot the client’s connection first. If other services work and only this host fails, concentrate on the host name, route, firewall, or organizational policy instead of repeatedly reconnecting Wi-Fi.
Use wired connectivity only as an isolation test
If Wi-Fi is suspected, a temporary Ethernet connection can help compare wireless and wired behavior. It is not a general Remote Desktop fix, and Microsoft’s guidance does not establish that buying a particular cable, router, or adapter will solve an RDP failure. The useful result is the comparison: if the connection works on one path but not the other, the network path deserves attention; if both fail identically, look back at host, account, firewall, or update checks.
Run diagnostics and updates before a reset
Microsoft’s broader Wi-Fi troubleshooting sequence includes diagnostics and keeping network components updated. Apply those steps to a general network problem before making a disruptive configuration change. Capture what changed and whether the client can reach anything else; that record helps an administrator distinguish a local adapter issue from a server-side restriction.

4. Review firewall settings without disabling protection
Allow the needed app instead of turning the firewall off
Microsoft says, “Generally, it’s safer to add an app to the list of allowed apps than to open a port.” It also warns that turning off Windows Firewall can make a device more vulnerable to unauthorized access. Do not make a global firewall shutdown your routine test for Remote Desktop.
- Open the Windows Security firewall settings on the relevant device.
- Review the list of allowed apps and the active network profile.
- If the Remote Desktop component is being blocked, use the narrowly scoped allowed-app option that your organization permits.
- Remove exceptions or rules that are no longer needed.
- Retest the connection, then document any rule you changed.
Opening a port is a broader exposure than allowing the required app. Microsoft advises allowing only what is needed and removing obsolete exceptions. Because the exact rule set can be controlled centrally, do not create a new inbound rule on a managed computer without the administrator’s approval.
Check policy and network profile restrictions
A work or school device may receive firewall and Remote Desktop settings through organizational policy. The visible toggle can be unavailable, revert after you change it, or differ from the policy applied to the active network profile. Those symptoms point to administration rather than a missing consumer setting. Contact the organization’s administrator with the host name, Windows edition, client location, time of failure, and any displayed error text.

Do not treat a disabled firewall as proof of an RDP cause
If a connection appears to work only while protection is disabled, re-enable the firewall and have the allowed-app or policy rule corrected. Leaving protection off converts a troubleshooting experiment into an ongoing security risk and does not identify which narrow rule should be changed.

Know the dated Windows 11 issue
Microsoft reported a Remote Desktop Services instability affecting some organizations using Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 after the September 2026 security update. Reported symptoms included RDP connection or sign-in failures and servers becoming unresponsive while Remote Desktop was being configured. This was an environment- and version-specific issue, not a universal explanation for every failed connection.
Microsoft’s September 14, 2026 out-of-band update says the issue was fixed. The September 8 release note describes the problem and says it was resolved in updates released on and after September 14, 2026.
Compare your device with the affected scope
- On the host, open Settings > System > About and record the Windows version.
- Open Windows Update and view Update history.
- Note when the Remote Desktop failure began and whether it followed the September 2026 security update.
- Check whether the September 14, 2026 out-of-band fix, or a later update that includes the resolution, is installed.
- If the host is Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 in an affected organization and the fix is absent, ask the administrator to follow Microsoft’s release-health guidance.
Do not infer that every Windows 10 connection stopped working because support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft’s end-of-support date is lifecycle context; it is not evidence that all Windows 10 Remote Desktop sessions ceased on that day. Record the actual edition, version, update history, and symptom onset.
6. Use Network reset only as a late general-network measure
Microsoft describes Network reset as a last step in general network troubleshooting, not as a first-line Remote Desktop repair. It removes and reinstalls network adapters and resets network settings. Afterward, VPN clients or virtual switches may need to be configured again.
Consider it only when the client has broader connectivity trouble and earlier diagnostics, updates, and ordinary adapter checks have not solved it. Before selecting it:
- Save the names and settings of VPN software, virtual switches, and other network tools.
- Make sure you can reconnect to the network after the reset.
- Plan for adapter reinstallation and reconfiguration.
- Do not use it to bypass a host-edition, PC-name, account, firewall-policy, or known-update problem.
If the client’s other network functions are normal and only one Remote Desktop destination fails, Network reset is unlikely to be the appropriate next action.

7. How to interpret common failure patterns
The pattern of the failure helps prioritize the next check without guessing at a fix.
- Immediate rejection before a sign-in screen: Recheck the host edition, whether Remote Desktop is enabled, the PC name, and whether the host is powered on and reachable.
- A sign-in screen appears but credentials fail: Concentrate on the intended account and its permission to sign in; do not start by changing Wi-Fi settings.
- Only one client fails while another authorized client succeeds: Compare the failing client’s network path, saved destination name, account selection, and local firewall profile.
- Several clients fail against the same host: Suspect host availability, policy, firewall configuration, or a server-side servicing issue and involve the administrator.
- All network applications fail from the client: Resolve the general network problem first; RDP is likely a symptom rather than the separate cause.
- The failure started immediately after servicing: Record the exact date, Windows version, and update history before uninstalling or changing anything.
These comparisons are useful because network reachability, authentication, host eligibility, and policy are separate gates. Passing one gate does not prove that the next one is working.
8. When to escalate instead of changing more settings
Managed computers and organizational access paths
Escalate when firewall controls are locked, Remote Desktop settings are enforced by policy, the host is a server, or access requires an organization-managed network path. Provide the administrator with:
- Remote host PC name and Windows edition.
- Windows version and update-history entries.
- Client operating system and network location.
- The account being used.
- Whether other network applications work.
- The exact time the failure started and any error wording shown.
This information lets the administrator compare policy, server health, and update status without asking you to weaken security controls.
Server-side or configuration failures
If the host becomes unresponsive during Remote Desktop configuration, or multiple authorized clients fail at once, stop making independent firewall changes. Those symptoms can indicate a service or policy problem on the host that requires administrative access and Microsoft’s current servicing guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect to a Windows Home PC with Remote Desktop?
Microsoft’s setup requirement applies to the remote host: it must run Windows Pro edition. The client can use any Windows edition or a different operating system, but changing the client does not make an ineligible Home host accept incoming Remote Desktop sessions.

Should I turn off Windows Firewall to test the connection?
No. Microsoft warns that turning off Windows Firewall can make the device more vulnerable to unauthorized access. Review the allowed-app list and the active network profile instead. On a managed device, ask the administrator to correct the policy rather than creating a broad exception.
Why does Wi-Fi say connected when Remote Desktop still fails?
A connected Wi-Fi indicator does not prove that a particular application can reach its destination. A specific-app block, firewall rule, route, host problem, or organizational policy can coexist with normal Wi-Fi status. Check whether other network functions work and whether only this host is affected.
Could an Ethernet cable fix Remote Desktop?
A temporary wired connection can be useful as an isolation test when Wi-Fi is suspected. If wired works and Wi-Fi does not, investigate the wireless path. If both fail, return to host, account, firewall, policy, and update checks. A cable, router, or adapter is not established as a general RDP fix.

What should I check if Remote Desktop stopped after a Windows update?
Record when the failure began, then check the host’s Windows version and Update history. Microsoft reported an issue affecting some organizations on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 after the September 2026 security update. Microsoft’s September 14, 2026 out-of-band update fixed that issue, so check whether it or a later update is installed.
Does Windows 10 reaching end of support mean Remote Desktop stopped working?
No. Microsoft’s Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but that date is lifecycle context, not evidence that every Windows 10 Remote Desktop session stopped. Diagnose the actual host edition, settings, network path, policy, version, and update history.
When should I use Network reset?
Use it only as a late measure for a broad, unresolved network problem, not for a wrong PC name, unsupported host, account issue, firewall policy, or known update issue. Network reset removes and reinstalls adapters and resets network settings; VPN clients and virtual switches may need to be configured again afterward.
What information should I give IT support?
Send the host PC name and Windows edition, Windows version and update history, client operating system and network location, account being used, whether other network applications work, the exact start time, and any displayed error wording. This lets support compare policy, reachability, host health, and servicing status efficiently.
The Bottom Line
Fix Remote Desktop in dependency order: confirm the host is Windows Pro, enable Remote Desktop, copy the current PC name, and use an authorized account. Then separate a general network failure from a single-host failure, review narrowly scoped firewall and policy rules, and check Windows version and update history if the timing points to servicing. Keep the firewall enabled, reserve Network reset for broad network trouble, and escalate managed or server-side problems with a concise record of what you tested.
