If the Windows Recall pause control is greyed out, turn off Save snapshots in Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots to stop saving snapshots persistently. For a temporary pause, use the Recall system-tray icon and choose Pause until tomorrow. If the setting itself is unavailable, device eligibility or an administrator policy may be responsible.
Turn off snapshot saving in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots.
- Switch Save snapshots to Off.
- Complete the Windows Hello authorization prompt if requested.
Microsoft identifies this setting as the way to stop saving snapshots; you can turn it back on later. Microsoft Support: Privacy and control over your Recall experience
Pause Recall temporarily from the system tray
Select the Recall icon in the system tray, then choose Pause until tomorrow. This is a temporary pause, not the persistent Settings switch: Microsoft says it ends at 12:00 AM. To resume snapshots sooner, open the Recall menu and select its resume command. The tray icon indicates whether snapshots are active or paused. Why the Save snapshots control may be greyed out
Microsoft documents two possible reasons: the PC may not meet Recall requirements, or an IT admin policy may restrict the feature. Those are possibilities, not a diagnosis of a particular computer. The title alone does not establish the PC’s eligibility, Windows build, or management policy. Microsoft Support: Use a screen reader to explore and navigate Recall

On a work or school PC
Contact your IT administrator if the control is unavailable. Microsoft says Recall is disabled and removed by default on managed devices. If the organization disables the Allow Recall policy, users cannot enable Recall themselves. An administrator can make Recall available and give users the choice to save snapshots, but cannot opt in on a user’s behalf. Microsoft Learn: Manage Recall
On a personal PC
Check whether the device meets Recall requirements. If it does and Save snapshots remains unavailable, the cited Microsoft guidance does not identify a universal repair or establish the specific cause for your PC; the exact eligibility or configuration issue needs device-specific investigation.

If the control still does not respond
- Use the Settings switch rather than relying on the temporary tray pause when your goal is to keep snapshot saving off.
- Complete the Windows Hello prompt when changing Recall settings; Microsoft requires authorization for those changes. Microsoft Support: Privacy and control over your Recall experience
- If both controls are unavailable on a managed computer, ask IT whether Recall is restricted by policy.
Removing Recall is a separate option
Microsoft also documents removing Recall through Windows Features. That is different from pausing snapshots or switching off Save snapshots: removal requires a restart and deletes previously saved snapshots. It is not the first troubleshooting step for a greyed-out pause control. Microsoft Support: Privacy and control over your Recall experience
