Short answer: A local account changes how Windows identifies you and where your sign-in data is used; it does not switch off Windows diagnostics, advertising controls, or app permissions. A local account is tied to one PC and can sign you in offline. A Microsoft account connects Windows to Microsoft services and can enable selected settings and file synchronization across devices. Treat the account decision and privacy settings as two separate decisions.
What changes at a glance
The account type determines the relationship between your Windows sign-in and Microsoft’s online services. It does not act as a master privacy switch. The practical differences are:
| Decision area | Local account | Microsoft account |
|---|---|---|
| Device scope | Created for and normally limited to one Windows device. | Uses an email address and password that can be used with Microsoft services on multiple devices. |
| Signing in without internet | Yes. Microsoft says, “A local account is created on the device and doesn’t require Internet connectivity to sign in.” | Windows normally uses the account’s online identity; an internet connection may be required for setup, account verification, or some connected features. |
| Cloud and service integration | Not connected to Microsoft cloud services by default. | Connects Windows to Microsoft services associated with the account. |
| Settings and files on other devices | Limited to the device unless you separately sign in to a service and configure it. | Selected settings can be available on other devices, and OneDrive can sync selected folders when you enable those features. |
| Diagnostics, app permissions and advertising | Still controlled by Windows privacy settings; choosing local does not disable them. | Still controlled by Windows privacy settings, plus account-level controls on Microsoft’s privacy dashboard. |
Microsoft’s account guidance explains the account distinction and the supported switch between account types in Change From a Local Account to a Microsoft Account in Windows. The exact prompts can differ on a managed PC or between Windows builds.

What a local account actually changes
It keeps the Windows identity device-specific
A local account is stored for that Windows installation rather than being the same identity you use for Microsoft services elsewhere. Your sign-in name, password and account profile are normally confined to that PC. If you create another Windows installation or another PC, the local account does not automatically appear there.

That separation can reduce automatic cloud integration. Windows does not use a Microsoft account to connect the device to services such as cloud backup or account-linked activity. You can still install and use applications, connect to networks and sign in to individual services separately. A local sign-in therefore limits automatic account association; it does not make the computer invisible to every service it contacts.
It supports offline sign-in
The defining operational benefit is that Windows can authenticate the local account without an internet connection. This matters on a travel laptop, a machine in a restricted network, or a PC whose Microsoft-account verification is temporarily unavailable. You still need internet access for online services, updates, cloud storage and websites.
It does not erase existing cloud use
If you previously used OneDrive, a Microsoft Store application or another Microsoft service, those services can retain their own sign-in and data. Changing the Windows sign-in does not automatically delete files already stored online, remove a separate service account or revoke permissions you granted elsewhere. Review each service if your goal is to disconnect it.
What a Microsoft account adds
One identity for Windows and Microsoft services
A Microsoft account is associated with an email address and password. Using it for Windows links the device to that account and can simplify access to Microsoft services. The account relationship is useful when you regularly move between PCs, use cloud storage or want Windows to offer account-based recovery and backup features.
Optional cross-device settings
Windows can make selected preferences available across devices through Windows backup and related sync controls. This is not a promise that every preference, file or application is copied automatically. The categories you enable, the Windows edition and the device’s configuration determine what is transferred.
OneDrive file synchronization is a separate choice
OneDrive does not automatically mirror every file on every PC merely because you use a Microsoft account. OneDrive’s folder-selection controls determine which known folders or other locations are synchronized. A folder that is not selected remains local, while a selected folder can be represented on multiple devices according to OneDrive’s settings.

Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Does switching to a local account turn off Windows data collection?
No. Account type and diagnostic collection are separate controls. Windows continues to send the minimum diagnostic information Microsoft requires for reliability, security and normal operation even when you use a local account and turn off optional diagnostics.
Required versus optional diagnostic data
In Diagnostics, feedback, and privacy in Windows, Microsoft describes required diagnostic data as the baseline needed to keep Windows dependable, secure and operating normally. Optional diagnostic data provides additional detail and can include information about browsing or activity and enhanced error reporting.
Set the diagnostic level to the required-only option if you do not want to provide the optional layer. This reduces the categories sent, but it is not an all-data-off switch. A local account does not change that baseline.
Deleting diagnostic data is a different action
Windows offers a way to delete diagnostic data associated with the device. That action does not delete diagnostic information associated with your Microsoft account. If you have used Windows while signed in, review both the device controls and the account’s online privacy controls rather than assuming one deletion covers both.

Advertising ID and recommendations are independent settings
Windows 11 includes advertising and recommendation controls in the Recommendations & offers area on newer builds. Microsoft is replacing the older General privacy page in recent Windows 11 versions, so the wording and location can vary after an update. The current explanation is in Privacy settings for Recommendations & offers in Windows 11.

What turning off Advertising ID does
The Advertising ID setting applies to apps that use the Windows advertising identifier. Turning it off prevents that identifier from being used for the relevant app personalization. It does not reduce the number of advertisements you see; it can make them less relevant instead. A local Windows account does not automatically change the Advertising ID state.
How to find the control
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy & security.
- Open Recommendations & offers (or the older General page if that is what your build shows).
- Review the Advertising ID and recommendation switches and set them individually.
If a work or school administrator manages the PC, a policy may hide or lock these options.
App permissions still need their own review
Windows provides per-capability controls for Microsoft Store apps and, in some cases, other applications. Typical categories include location, camera, microphone, contacts and calendar. The account you use to sign in does not decide these permissions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck a capability
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Choose a capability under App permissions, such as Location, Camera or Microphone.
- Turn off access globally or disable individual apps where the page provides that list.
Use the guidance in Windows privacy settings that apps use to identify the available categories. Microsoft cautions that these controls mostly apply to Microsoft Store apps. Traditional desktop applications may not appear in the list or may access data through their own mechanisms. Do not treat one Windows toggle as proof that every application is blocked.
Account-level activity and advertising controls
When you use Microsoft products while signed in, some activity and advertising choices are associated with the Microsoft account rather than only with the local device. The Microsoft privacy dashboard lets you view and manage data and ad settings available for that account.
This online dashboard is a separate layer from the switches in Windows Settings. Switching to a local account can stop that Windows installation from using the Microsoft account as its primary sign-in, but it does not retroactively remove the account’s existing activity or change settings you manage on the web. Review both locations when you are auditing an account’s history or personalization.

Windows backup, settings sync and OneDrive: what to inspect
Windows backup
Windows backup can make selected preferences available when you sign in on another device. Check which categories are enabled rather than assuming all settings are copied. The available categories and labels can change with Windows updates and account configuration.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →OneDrive folders
OneDrive has its own folder-selection and synchronization controls. Open the OneDrive settings on the PC and review the folders selected for sync. A Microsoft account is a prerequisite for the cloud identity, but the selected folders determine the file scope. If you move to a local account, verify whether OneDrive remains signed in separately and whether synchronization is still running.
Before disconnecting an account
- Confirm that files you need offline are present on the PC, not only represented as cloud placeholders.
- Check Windows backup categories and OneDrive folder selection.
- Record any service that uses the Microsoft account independently of the Windows sign-in.
- Make a separate backup before removing or deleting an account profile.
How to switch between account types
Microsoft documents both directions in Change From a Local Account to a Microsoft Account in Windows. The labels below are the current general path; a managed device, edition or later Windows build may show different prompts.
Switch from a local account to a Microsoft account
- Sign in to the Windows profile you want to change.
- Open Settings and select Accounts.
- Open Your info.
- Choose the option to sign in with a Microsoft account instead of a local account.
- Enter the Microsoft account email address and follow the verification prompts.
- Set or confirm the Windows sign-in method requested by the wizard, then restart or sign out if Windows asks you to.
Afterward, inspect Windows backup, OneDrive and privacy settings; changing the identity does not choose those settings for you.
Switch from a Microsoft account to a local account
- Open Settings > Accounts > Your info.
- Select the option to sign in with a local account instead.
- Enter the requested local username, password and password hint.
- Sign out or restart when prompted and sign in with the new local credentials.
Keep the Microsoft account available if you still need services or files linked to it. A local Windows sign-in does not migrate or delete those online records.

Choosing the right setup
A local account is a good fit when
- You need reliable sign-in when the PC is offline.
- The computer is dedicated to one person and you do not need settings replicated to other Windows devices.
- You want to keep the Windows identity separate from Microsoft cloud services by default.
- You are comfortable managing cloud apps with their own sign-ins when needed.
A Microsoft account is a good fit when
- You use multiple Windows PCs and want selected preferences available on each.
- You rely on OneDrive or other Microsoft services and prefer one account for access.
- You want Windows backup and account-linked recovery features that require the online identity.
- You understand that sync is selective and are willing to review the data categories involved.
Use either account with a privacy-focused configuration when
Your main objective is reducing optional data sharing rather than avoiding cloud services entirely. In that case, choose the account that supports your workflow, then set diagnostics to required-only, review Recommendations & offers, audit app permissions and check the privacy dashboard if you use a Microsoft account.

Common misconceptions and fixes
“A local account makes Windows private.”
It limits the Windows identity to the device and avoids automatic Microsoft-account integration, but required diagnostics, app behavior and advertising controls still operate according to their own settings. Configure those controls directly.
“A Microsoft account uploads everything.”
Windows backup and OneDrive use selected categories and folders. Inspect the controls to see what is enabled instead of assuming every file and preference is synchronized.
“Turning off Advertising ID removes ads.”
It does not. It changes the use of the Windows advertising identifier for supporting apps; the number of ads can remain the same.
“The app-permission switch blocks every program.”
Desktop apps can be absent from the permission list or use different access paths. Check the application’s own settings and its publisher’s permissions model as well as Windows.
“Deleting diagnostic data removes all account history.”
Device diagnostic deletion and Microsoft-account activity controls are separate. Review the privacy dashboard for account-associated data.
Windows version and support notes
Privacy page names and locations change as Windows 11 is updated. If an instruction refers to General but your PC shows Recommendations & offers, use the newer page and read the descriptions beside each switch. Microsoft’s general privacy guidance is available at Change privacy settings in Windows.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Do not assume that a Windows 10 PC continues to receive current free security fixes or software updates after that date; its available controls and support status differ from a supported Windows 11 installation.
A practical privacy checklist
- Decide whether offline, device-only sign-in or cross-device Microsoft integration matters more for your workflow.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback and select the least optional diagnostic level available.
- Review Recommendations & offers (or General) and decide whether to disable Advertising ID and recommendation features.
- Audit Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts and Calendar under App permissions.
- Check Windows backup categories and OneDrive’s selected folders.
- If you use a Microsoft account, review activity and ad settings on the privacy dashboard.
- Recheck these pages after major Windows updates because labels and placements can change.
The result is predictable: the account choice controls identity, sign-in scope and cloud integration, while the privacy pages control diagnostics, personalization, permissions and account activity.
