Windows cannot be configured to send no data at all through ordinary consumer settings. Microsoft describes Required diagnostic data as the minimum information Windows sends to keep a device secure, reliable and operating normally. You can decline the additional Optional diagnostic data, then manage Microsoft-account activity, app permissions, advertising controls and speech or typing features separately.
The controls below are for current Windows 11 documentation unless a Windows 10 path is identified. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so labels and availability can differ on older installations.
What Windows diagnostic data is
Diagnostic data is information Windows sends to Microsoft about the device and its operation. Microsoft says it uses the minimum level to help keep Windows secure and up to date, troubleshoot problems and improve Windows. Those are Microsoft’s stated purposes, not an independent guarantee about the result.

Microsoft’s support documentation states: “Regardless of whether you choose to send Optional diagnostic data, your device will be just as secure and will operate normally.” This describes Microsoft’s position on the effect of selecting Required only.
What Optional diagnostic data can include
The categories below come from Microsoft’s descriptions for applicable Windows 11 and Windows 10 releases. They are examples and documented categories, not a statement that every item is collected from every computer. Microsoft says some optional data is sampled from only a small percentage of devices, and the specific list can change.
Device, connectivity and configuration
Optional records can provide more detail about hardware, peripherals, network connections, device settings, configuration and capabilities. This helps describe the environment in which a fault occurred.
Product and service usage
Microsoft lists information about how Windows features, products and services are used. Usage data is not the same as a complete record of everything a person does on a computer.
Performance and reliability
Additional performance measurements, reliability information and enhanced error reports can be included. These details can help Microsoft diagnose failures more quickly.
Software setup and inventory
Optional diagnostic categories include software installation, setup and inventory information. The category identifies software-related context; it should not be read as proof that the contents of every document are uploaded.

Browsing history and app activity
Microsoft’s optional-data descriptions include information about websites browsed and device or app activity. The documentation presents these as possible categories and examples, not as a claim that every device sends a full browsing history.

Inking, typing and speech-utterance information appears among the optional categories. Separate Windows controls govern speech, voice activation, inking and typing features, so changing the diagnostic level is not the same as disabling every input feature.
Crash-dump memory
Enhanced error reporting can include crash-dump memory contents. A memory dump could unintentionally contain parts of a file that was open or in use when the crash occurred. This is one reason to consider whether Optional data is appropriate on a device handling confidential material.

Required only or Optional: how to decide
The practical choice is not “data” versus “no data.” It is the minimum Required level versus Required plus additional Optional categories.

This setting does not control Microsoft-account activity, an app’s access to your camera or location, advertising identifiers, or every speech and typing feature. Those have separate controls.

How to limit diagnostic data
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Diagnostics & feedback.
- Under Diagnostic data, select the available option to send only Required diagnostic data.
The exact wording can vary by Windows 11 release. If the choice is unavailable or says it is managed by an organization, a workplace or school policy controls it.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy.
- Open Diagnostics & feedback.
- Choose the available setting that sends only Required diagnostic data.
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft’s current instructions cover selected Windows 10 releases, but an older build may show different labels or fewer choices.
How to view and delete device diagnostic data
Diagnostic Data Viewer
Windows includes Diagnostic Data Viewer so you can inspect diagnostic data available while the viewer is running.

- Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback in Windows 11, or Settings > Privacy > Diagnostics & feedback in Windows 10.
- Turn on the option to view diagnostic data, then open Diagnostic Data Viewer.
- Review the entries shown by the viewer while it is active.
The viewer is not a complete historical archive of everything Windows has ever sent. It shows data available under the viewer’s operation, so an absence of an entry is not proof that no other diagnostic event occurred.
Delete diagnostic data
On the same Diagnostics & feedback page, select Delete diagnostic data and confirm the action. This concerns device diagnostic data. Microsoft explicitly distinguishes it from diagnostic or activity information associated with your Microsoft account, and deleting it does not stop future transmission at the Required or selected Optional level.
Microsoft-account activity is a separate record
Use Microsoft’s privacy dashboard to review or manage certain activity associated with your Microsoft account and to review available ad settings. It is not a master log of everything Windows or every application has processed.

Entries can take a few days to appear. The date displayed for an item is the date Microsoft received the information, which may differ from the date you performed the activity. Microsoft describes deletion of apps-and-services activity by day in its apps and services activity documentation.

Conversely, removing an item from the dashboard does not change the Windows diagnostic level selected in Settings.
App permissions and app diagnostics
Windows privacy settings let you decide whether apps can use particular device features. In Windows 11, review these under Settings > Privacy & security; Windows 10 uses Settings > Privacy. Relevant categories can include:
- Location
- Camera
- Microphone
- Contacts
- Calendar
These switches govern app access to the selected feature. They are separate from Windows diagnostic-data settings, so turning off location access for an app does not turn off Required diagnostics.
App diagnostics is another independent control. Microsoft says it can make limited information about running apps available, including app and package names, the user account and memory use. You can allow or block individual apps where the control is offered. The setting does not represent a blanket deletion of diagnostic data collected by Windows itself.
Personalization, recommendations and advertising ID
Windows 11 places relevant controls under Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers. Microsoft documents two important choices in its guide to Recommendations & offers.

Personalized offers
Microsoft says personalized offers can use device information and Windows diagnostic data together with account information and data from other Microsoft products and services. Disabling this setting limits that personalization feature; it does not rewrite the diagnostic-data choice or erase account history.
Advertising ID
The advertising ID is a per-user identifier that apps and advertising networks using it may use to personalize ads. Turning the ID off does not reduce the number of advertisements. It also does not control website cookies or advertising systems operated by third parties that do not rely on this Windows identifier. Microsoft’s documentation explains the scope and limits of this control.
Speech, voice activation, inking and typing
Windows provides separate choices for speech recognition, voice activation, inking and typing. Microsoft says contributing voice clips to improve the service is optional. Open the relevant privacy controls in Windows Settings and change only the feature you intend to change; a voice-clip choice should not be described as preventing all processing of speech, and disabling one typing or inking feature does not automatically disable every other input service.

Microsoft’s feature-specific explanations are in Speech, voice activation, inking, typing, and privacy. These settings coexist with the optional diagnostic category for inking, typing and speech utterances.
What these controls do not accomplish
- There is no ordinary consumer switch documented by Microsoft that makes Windows send zero data. Required diagnostic data remains the minimum level.
- Deleting device diagnostic data does not delete Microsoft-account activity and does not prevent future diagnostic transmission.
- Diagnostic Data Viewer is not a complete historical export.
- App-permission switches do not change Windows diagnostic-data collection.
- Turning off Advertising ID does not remove ads or govern all interest-based advertising.
- Changing a speech, typing or inking option does not establish that all related data processing has stopped.
When an organization controls the setting
On a work or school computer, an administrator can configure Windows privacy policies. A disabled selector or a message that a setting is managed by your organization means the local account may not override that policy. Contact the organization’s administrator for its retention and diagnostic-data rules rather than repeatedly changing the consumer switch.
Because Microsoft updates category descriptions and setting labels, check the support page for your Windows release before documenting a policy or writing instructions for other users. The Windows 11 and Windows 10 navigation paths are similar but not interchangeable, and Windows 10 is no longer supported as of October 14, 2025.
A practical way to audit your privacy settings
- Identify whether the computer is running Windows 11 or Windows 10 and note whether it is managed by an organization.
- Set the diagnostic level on the appropriate Diagnostics & feedback page.
- Open Diagnostic Data Viewer if you need to inspect currently available device diagnostic entries.
- Use Delete diagnostic data when you want to request removal of device diagnostic data, remembering its device-only scope.
- Review the Microsoft privacy dashboard separately for account-associated activity and delete entries there when the dashboard provides that option.
- Audit app access to location, camera, microphone, contacts and calendar.
- Review Recommendations & offers, Advertising ID and the specific speech, voice, inking and typing controls that match your use.
This sequence keeps four scopes distinct: Windows diagnostics, Microsoft-account activity, app access and personalization or input features. Treating them as one master privacy switch is what causes most Windows privacy settings to be misunderstood.
