Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is Microsoft’s framework for building desktop applications that run on Windows. It combines .NET code with XAML markup for defining interfaces, and includes controls, data binding, layout, graphics, animation, documents, media, and typography. WPF remains part of Microsoft’s .NET development stack, but it is Windows-only—not a cross-platform UI framework.
What Windows Presentation Foundation is
WPF is a user-interface framework for Windows desktop software. Microsoft describes it as resolution-independent and built around a vector-based rendering engine. It is part of .NET, so WPF applications can use other elements of the .NET API. Microsoft’s WPF overview describes the framework and its capabilities.
WPF is more than a collection of buttons and windows. It provides a system for laying out interfaces, connecting them to application data, styling and templating controls, and presenting graphics and rich content.

XAML defines the interface
Developers commonly use XAML, an XML-based markup language, to declare windows, controls, shapes, and other interface elements. When the application runs, that markup is converted into WPF objects. This lets developers describe much of the interface separately from the code that handles its behavior.

.NET code handles behavior
WPF applications use .NET types, often from the System.Windows namespace. Code can set properties, call methods, and respond to events. WPF also provides features such as dependency properties and routed events for working with UI state and interactions.
Data binding connects the interface to application data
Data binding connects UI properties to data objects, so displayed values can reflect application state. WPF also supports validation, sorting, filtering, grouping, and data templates. These capabilities help developers build data-driven desktop interfaces without manually updating every visual element.

- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
What WPF can do
- Build interfaces: Use controls, layout systems, styles, and templates to organize and customize application windows.
- Present graphics: Draw vector shapes and use transformations, 2D and 3D graphics, and animation.
- Display rich content: Work with documents, media, text, and typography as well as standard controls.
- Scale UI elements: WPF uses device-independent pixels, defined as 1/96 of an inch, and can scale content for system DPI. Its graphics system can use hardware acceleration; this describes framework capabilities, not a guarantee of application performance.

No. WPF applications run on Windows. Modern .NET is available across platforms, but that does not make WPF itself cross-platform. If an application must run on macOS or Linux, WPF alone does not satisfy that requirement. Microsoft’s platform overview distinguishes WPF’s Windows scope from .NET more broadly.

WPF for modern .NET and .NET Framework
There are two WPF implementation lines to keep distinct: WPF for modern .NET and WPF for .NET Framework 4. They differ in project formats, supported APIs, and migration considerations. A WPF application’s existing target matters when choosing tools, planning an upgrade, or checking whether a particular API is available; do not assume that guidance for one implementation applies unchanged to the other. Microsoft’s WPF documentation index provides the relevant documentation.
Is WPF still current?
Microsoft continues to publish WPF updates for individual .NET releases. Its release documentation covers .NET 10 and .NET 11 Preview, and Microsoft states that .NET 10 was released in November 2025. That release activity shows the framework is maintained; it does not establish how widely WPF is used or whether it is the right choice for a particular project.

When evaluating a target, check the relevant release notes and distinguish stable features from preview material. A feature documented for a preview should not be treated as generally available. See Microsoft’s WPF release overview and WPF updates for .NET 10.
When WPF may fit a project
WPF is worth considering when the target is Windows desktop and the application benefits from its controls, data binding, layout, or graphics capabilities. The decision depends on the operating systems required, the application’s current .NET target and code, the UI and rendering needs, accessibility requirements, migration effort, tooling, and support lifecycle. The framework’s feature set alone does not determine which UI technology is best for every project.
