To stop unwanted pop-ups on a Windows PC, leave Microsoft Edge’s built-in blocker enabled. If alerts keep appearing after Edge closes, block the website’s notification permission instead. For ads that persist, check extensions and unwanted software. Never call a phone number shown in a frightening warning or give an unsolicited caller remote access to your PC.

First identify what is appearing

What you see Likely source What to do
A new browser window, tab, or partial window opens unexpectedly A website pop-up Check Edge’s pop-up and redirect setting.
A banner appears near the lower-right corner or in Windows Notification Center, sometimes after Edge closes A website notification permission Block notifications for the site that sent it.
An ad appears within a webpage In-page advertising The pop-up blocker may not affect it; consider a reputable ad-blocking extension.
A full-screen alert claims your PC is infected, plays loud sounds, or displays a support number Potential scareware Do not call the number or grant remote access. Close the page safely.

Edge’s pop-up blocker targets sites that automatically open a new window, tab, or partial window. It does not block advertisements embedded in a webpage or windows that open after you select a page control. Microsoft explains the blocker’s scope and settings.

Keep Edge’s pop-up blocker enabled

Microsoft says Edge’s blocker is on by default. To check it, open Settings and more > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Pop-ups and redirects and leave blocking enabled. Menu labels can change between Edge versions.

Some trusted sites may need to open a new window—for example, to show a bank statement. Allow that behavior only when you trust the site and need the feature. Prefer a site-specific exception over a broad one.

Block notifications from the website sending them

Website notifications are separate from pop-ups and can appear even when Edge is closed. If you recognize the site name on an unwanted alert, remove its permission in Edge:

  1. Open Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All sites.
  2. Select the site responsible for the alert.
  3. Find Notifications and choose Block.

You can also open the site, select the site information control beside the address bar, and change its Notifications permission to Block. Microsoft documents these options in its Edge notification settings guide.

See Microsoft’s Windows notification settings guidance.

Troubleshoot interruptions that continue

If the blocker is enabled but unwanted interruptions remain, work through these checks. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what helped.

  1. Update Edge: open Settings > Settings > About Microsoft Edge and install available updates.
  2. Check extensions: temporarily disable extensions, then re-enable them individually to identify whether one is responsible.
  3. Consider third-party cookies: blocking them may help with some behavior, but can affect how websites work.
  4. Clear the browser cache.
  5. Scan for unwanted software if the symptoms suggest that something installed on the PC is generating ads or redirects.

These steps are among Microsoft’s recommended checks for Edge pop-ups. If the problem is an ad embedded in a page rather than a new window, Microsoft notes that a reputable ad-blocking extension may help. Get extensions from the official browser add-on store and review their publisher and permissions before installing one.

Handle fake security warnings without engaging

A webpage can imitate a Windows alert with full-screen content, repeated pop-ups, or loud audio. A phone number in such a warning is a major reason to distrust it: Microsoft states that “Microsoft error and warning messages never include phone numbers.”

  • Do not call the displayed number, pay the caller, or give anyone remote access to the computer.
  • If the page has taken over the screen, press Esc to try to leave full-screen mode, then close the tab or browser window. Do not interact with the page’s phone number or download prompts.
  • Edge’s scareware blocker can exit full-screen mode, stop aggressive audio, and show a warning with an option to continue or close the page. It is an extra layer of protection, not a guarantee that every deceptive page will be detected. See Microsoft’s scareware protection guidance.

Check Windows for unwanted software

If ads or redirects continue beyond one site, an unwanted app or other software may be involved. Microsoft recommends uninstalling software you do not need, getting the latest security intelligence, and running a full scan with Microsoft Defender Antivirus. If unwanted software persists, use Microsoft Defender Offline. Follow Microsoft’s malware removal guidance.

Windows Security can detect potentially unwanted apps that may show unexpected ads or offer additional software. Detection does not itself remove an item: you must select it and start an action. Microsoft’s specific instructions for potentially unwanted app settings apply to Windows 10; they distinguish blocking apps already downloaded or installed from blocking downloads, which applies only when using Edge. Settings and defaults can vary by Windows version, so check the controls available on your PC. See Microsoft’s potentially unwanted app guidance.
