A Windows password reset disk can restore access to a forgotten local account—but only if you created it before you were locked out. Microsoft’s built-in method uses an ordinary USB flash drive, not a special $15 Microsoft product. If you already own a suitable USB drive, you can prepare one in Windows without buying a dedicated reset disk. The method does not apply to Microsoft accounts.
What a Windows password reset disk does—and who can use it
Microsoft documents the password reset disk for local accounts in Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is a USB flash drive prepared through Windows that can be used to reset the local account’s password at sign-in. It is a recovery option, not a universal unlock key.
The key distinction is account type. Microsoft says the reset-disk option is unavailable for Microsoft accounts. If you sign in with a Microsoft account, use Microsoft’s account recovery and sign-in help rather than creating a local-account reset disk. Create the disk before you forget your password
You must be signed in to the local account when you create its reset disk. Buying a USB drive after you are locked out does not make it a previously prepared reset disk.

- Sign in to the Windows local account you want to protect and connect a USB flash drive.
- Open Control Panel, search for create password reset, then select Create a password reset disk.
- Follow the wizard’s instructions, then remove the drive and keep it somewhere safe.
These are Microsoft’s documented steps for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft also says you do not need to create a new reset disk just because you change the account password.
Which recovery route fits your situation?

Microsoft states that if the documented local-account recovery options do not work, its support team cannot retrieve or circumvent the forgotten password. Use these steps only for a device and account you are authorized to access.

Is spending $15 worth it?
Not for a special disk that the documented Windows process does not require. Microsoft instructs users to supply a USB flash drive and create the reset disk themselves. If you already have suitable USB media, you can prepare it without buying a dedicated product. If you do not own a drive, ordinary USB media can help you prepare for a future lockout—but buying it after you have forgotten the password will not create the advance-prepared recovery disk needed for this method.
This conclusion is about Microsoft’s built-in process, not a review of any particular commercial product. Microsoft’s instructions do not establish the safety, compatibility, effectiveness, or current price of third-party password-reset products.
