A Windows on Arm laptop can be an excellent choice if your essential applications have native Arm64 versions or work reliably through Windows 11 emulation. It is a risky purchase when your workflow depends on hardware drivers, kernel-level security tools, specialist peripherals, accessibility software, or games with Arm-incompatible anti-cheat components.
Before buying, audit every must-have application and device against the exact Windows 11 laptop configuration. Confirm the processor architecture, native Arm64 availability, emulation suitability, driver support, game compatibility, RAM, storage, ports, display, warranty, and cellular options. Treat the Copilot+ label as an NPU capability class—not as a guarantee that your software or hardware will work.
The short answer: compatibility comes before specifications
Microsoft says most Windows applications run on Windows 11 Arm-based PCs, and applications rebuilt for Arm have the best performance. Windows 11 can also emulate many x86 and x64 desktop applications, which makes the platform practical for a broad range of office, communication, creative, and utility software. However, emulation does not translate hardware drivers or kernel-mode components. A program can open successfully while its printer driver, VPN filter, plug-in, security module, scanner interface, or anti-cheat service fails.
Use this decision rule:
- Buy with confidence when your critical applications offer current Arm64 builds and your peripherals use built-in Windows drivers or confirmed Arm64 drivers.
- Buy only after testing when important applications are x86 or x64-only but do not install drivers or kernel components. Windows 11 emulation may be sufficient, but performance and feature behavior must be checked with your real files and workflow.
- Choose another platform or keep a second machine when a business-critical application, device, accessibility tool, security product, or game depends on a component that the publisher has not confirmed for Windows 11 Arm.
The exact laptop still matters. Two machines with the same processor family can have different memory, storage, firmware, ports, display options, cellular hardware, and warranty terms.

What “Windows on Arm” means
Windows on Arm is Windows 11 running on a processor based on the Arm architecture rather than the x86 architecture used by most traditional Windows PCs. The processor architecture affects which application binaries can execute directly and which must be translated.
A native Arm64 application is compiled for the processor and normally offers the best performance, efficiency, and integration. Microsoft lists native Arm versions of Microsoft 365 applications and examples including Chrome, Slack, Spotify, Zoom, WhatsApp, Blender, Affinity Suite, and DaVinci Resolve. Those examples are not a guarantee for every edition or plug-in, so check the publisher’s current download or system-requirements page for the exact version you use.
Windows 11 also supports x86 and x64 application emulation. On supported Windows 11 Arm devices, version 24H2 includes Microsoft’s Prism emulation technology. Prism translates user-mode x86 and x64 instructions so many conventional desktop programs can run without an Arm64 build. Microsoft’s technical documentation explains the boundary in its x86 and x64 emulation guidance.
Emulation is not a universal compatibility layer. Drivers are outside that translation path. A program that installs or depends on a kernel-mode driver needs an Arm64 driver supplied by the developer. This distinction is why an ordinary photo editor may work while a specialized capture card, enterprise security client, or device-control utility does not.
Use this compatibility model for every application
| Application or component | What to verify | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|
| Native Arm64 application | Publisher supports your Windows 11 version, edition, plug-ins, and required features | Preferred path for performance and efficiency |
| x86 or x64 user-mode application | It runs under Windows 11 emulation; test large files, plug-ins, codecs, macros, and background tasks | Often workable, but performance and feature behavior vary |
| Kernel-mode or device driver | Developer provides an Arm64 driver and supports your exact device and Windows release | Emulation cannot solve a missing driver |
| Security, VPN, backup, virtualization, or cloud integration | Publisher confirms Windows 11 Arm support for its service, filters, and management tools | Confirm before replacing a primary work computer |
| Game with anti-cheat | Game publisher confirms the title and anti-cheat driver work on Windows 11 Arm | Compatibility is title-specific; a broad “PC game” label is not enough |
How to audit your apps before buying
Do not make a list based only on the applications you open every day. Include everything that launches at startup, adds a right-click menu, installs a browser extension, controls a device, or processes files in the background.
- Write down your complete workflow. Include office applications, accounting or line-of-business software, development tools, plug-ins, fonts, codecs, browser extensions, backup utilities, VPN clients, password managers, antivirus products, virtual machines, cloud-storage agents, and remote-access tools.
- Classify each item. Mark it as native Arm64, x86/x64 user-mode, or driver-dependent. If the publisher’s documentation does not say, treat the status as unconfirmed rather than assuming emulation will work.
- Check the publisher, not just an installer. Look for a Windows 11 Arm system-requirements statement, an Arm64 download, supported-version list, or support article. Confirm that your edition, plug-ins, add-ins, macros, codecs, and hardware acceleration are included.
- Check licensing and activation. Some applications launch under emulation but use a separate licensing service or hardware token that has its own Arm requirement.
- Test representative work. If possible, use a returnable laptop to open your largest documents, render a real project, run imports and exports, connect to company services, and complete the tasks that determine whether you can work.
- Record a fallback. For an unconfirmed application, decide whether a browser version, remote desktop session, another computer, or a different application is acceptable before you purchase.
Microsoft contributes data to the evolving third-party open-source Works on WoA compatibility list. It is useful as a cross-check, but it cannot guarantee that a particular application version, plug-in, driver, device, or future update will work on your laptop.
Printers, docks, scanners, and other peripherals
Peripherals work when the required driver is built into Windows 11 or the hardware developer supplies an Arm64 driver. Microsoft says most printers are supported, including printers using Mopria, and notes that some major printer manufacturers provide companion support applications. “Most printers” is not the same as “your printer with every advanced feature,” so verify the exact model.
Printer checks
- Find the printer’s exact model number and regional variant.
- Check the manufacturer’s support page for Windows 11 Arm or Arm64 driver and utility support.
- Confirm scanning, duplexing, color management, label printing, secure release, firmware updates, and administration features—not just basic printing.
- Check whether the printer supports Mopria or another class driver if a full manufacturer package is unavailable.
On some Arm-based systems, a manufacturer installer can fail even though Windows can use the printer. Microsoft’s Surface ARM software and peripheral guidance notes that installing through Windows Settings can be an alternative in some cases. That workaround may provide basic operation without the manufacturer’s complete control panel, status monitor, or scanning suite.
Dock, display, audio, and storage checks
Check every component in a dock: USB hub, Ethernet adapter, display outputs, audio, card reader, and power delivery. A dock may appear to connect while one function depends on an unsupported driver or firmware utility. Do the same for scanners, audio interfaces, MIDI hardware, drawing tablets, smart-card readers, barcode scanners, external storage encryption tools, and specialized cameras.
Ask the hardware vendor whether the current driver is Arm64, whether firmware updates can be installed from Windows on Arm, and whether management software is required. A device that follows a standard USB class may work with built-in Windows support, but proprietary features still require confirmation.

Accessibility and assistive technology require a named-app check
Microsoft cautions that not all assistive-technology applications work as expected on Windows 11 Arm and recommends checking with the publisher. Verify the exact screen reader, magnifier, speech-recognition tool, switch-access software, braille display driver, keyboard remapper, and specialist plug-in you rely on.

Microsoft’s FAQ names NVDA as updated for Windows 11 Arm compatibility. That named example should not be generalized to every screen reader, magnifier, speech tool, or accessibility workflow. Confirm support for your application version, hardware driver, add-ons, and enterprise-management configuration before purchase. If accessibility software is essential, arrange a hands-on trial or retain a return option and test the complete workflow, including login, browser access, document editing, notifications, and peripheral controls.
Can you play games on Windows on Arm?
Game support is title-specific. Microsoft warns that some games and applications do not work when they rely on anti-cheat drivers that were not made for Windows 11 Arm. A game may install, launch, or run a benchmark and still fail when its multiplayer anti-cheat service initializes.
- List the exact games you play, including single-player and multiplayer titles.
- Check each publisher’s current Windows 11 Arm or Arm64 support statement.
- Identify the anti-cheat technology and whether it installs a kernel-mode driver.
- Test installation, sign-in, controller input, graphics settings, updates, and an actual multiplayer session.
- Check whether launchers, overlays, mods, capture tools, or voice utilities add their own driver or compatibility requirement.
Do not rely on a general claim that “gaming works on Arm” or “gaming does not work on Arm.” The result depends on the title, anti-cheat implementation, graphics stack, updates, and the specific laptop’s performance and cooling.
Copilot+ PC is not synonymous with Windows on Arm
Copilot+ is a Windows 11 hardware class defined by a high-performance neural processing unit (NPU) and related capabilities. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC developer guidance describes an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second; many new Windows AI features require an NPU rated at 40+ TOPS. The guidance lists devices using Snapdragon X processors as well as systems with AMD and Intel silicon.
Recommended Free Tools
Therefore, a Copilot+ PC can be Arm-based or x86-based. Verify the processor architecture on the individual product listing instead of inferring it from the Copilot+ label. Conversely, a Windows on Arm laptop is not automatically a Copilot+ PC unless its hardware meets the applicable requirements.
The Copilot+ designation also does not tell you whether the machine has enough RAM for your projects, adequate SSD capacity, a suitable display, the ports you need, or enough sustained performance for your workload. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC information also notes that some AI experiences require an internet connection. Availability and behavior can vary by feature, market, account, and software version; do not assume every AI function runs locally or is available in your region.
Compare the actual laptop configuration, not the platform label
Once compatibility is established, compare the exact stock-keeping unit (SKU). Product families often contain several memory, storage, screen, wireless, and cellular configurations.
| Specification | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Processor and architecture | Is it Arm64, and which exact processor and model number are listed? |
| Memory | How much RAM is installed, is it soldered, and is the capacity sufficient for your applications and virtual workspaces? |
| Storage | What is the SSD capacity, can it be replaced, and how much space remains after Windows and recovery data? |
| Display and input | What are resolution, brightness, scaling behavior, refresh rate, keyboard layout, touch, pen, and webcam specifications? |
| Ports and networking | Which USB, display, audio, card-reader, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Ethernet options are built in or require a dock? |
| Warranty and service | What is covered in your region, how are repairs handled, and is accidental damage available? |
| Cellular | Does this configuration have a physical SIM, eSIM, both, or neither, and is your carrier supported? |
Do not treat manufacturer battery estimates as independent test results. The available evidence supports efficiency as a potential Arm platform benefit, but it does not establish a comparable number of hours across laptops. Look for independent tests that use comparable settings and workloads, and distinguish light web use from sustained compilation, video export, or gaming.
Cellular connectivity varies by model
Windows 11 Arm laptops may include a physical SIM, an eSIM, either option, or no cellular modem, depending on the manufacturer and configuration. If mobile data is important, confirm the exact SKU, modem bands, carrier certification, SIM format, eSIM activation process, and whether the modem remains available after sleep or firmware updates. Do not infer cellular support from the processor family or from a product series name.

Windows 11 support matters for a current purchase
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. A current purchase should therefore be evaluated around supported Windows 11 configurations, not around assumptions about continued Windows 10 updates.
This distinction is important because Windows 10 Arm had narrower application support: Microsoft’s FAQ states that x64 applications do not run there, while Windows 11 supports x64 emulation. Confirm that the laptop ships with a supported Windows 11 edition and that your organization’s management, security, and update policies support it.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Record every essential application, plug-in, background service, and hardware device.
- For each item, obtain a current Arm64 support statement or classify it as x86/x64 user-mode or driver-dependent.
- Verify printers, scanners, docks, audio devices, storage tools, VPNs, antivirus, virtualization, and accessibility hardware with their manufacturers or publishers.
- Check each important game and its anti-cheat dependency individually.
- Confirm the exact processor architecture and SKU, not just the product family or Copilot+ badge.
- Compare RAM, SSD, display, keyboard, ports, weight, warranty, wireless hardware, and cellular options for that SKU.
- Use a returnable purchase where possible and test your real workflow before the return period ends.
- Keep a fallback plan for any unconfirmed application or device.
How to test a laptop during the return period
Perform the tests in the order that could make the laptop unusable for you. Start with login and security, then connect the devices you cannot replace, and finally run normal workloads.

Common buying mistakes
“It installs, so it is compatible”
Installation proves only that the installer ran. Test the driver, plug-in, device, activation service, and the work you perform after installation.
“Copilot+ means every AI feature is local”
The class indicates NPU capability, not universal local execution. Some experiences require an internet connection, and feature availability varies.
“The processor name tells me the whole configuration”
It does not. Memory, storage, display, ports, modem, firmware, and warranty can differ within one processor family.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“A printer that prints will scan and manage itself”
Basic printing may use a built-in class driver while scanning, status monitoring, firmware updates, or enterprise controls require a separate Arm64 application.
“A game that launches will work online”
Anti-cheat initialization and multiplayer services can add a driver requirement that appears only after launch or an update.
When Windows on Arm is a sensible choice
Windows on Arm is most straightforward for buyers whose work is browser-centered or built around applications with current Arm64 releases, standard peripherals, and no specialized kernel-level tools. It can also suit buyers willing to test a small number of x86 or x64 applications under Windows 11 emulation and keep a fallback for exceptions.
Delay the purchase or choose a different system when your livelihood depends on an unconfirmed driver, specialist device, accessibility component, security filter, virtual-machine stack, or anti-cheat game. Compatibility evidence for that one dependency matters more than a processor label, an AI badge, or a general claim that most Windows applications run.
