Windows on Arm can run far more software than its processor architecture might suggest, but compatibility is layered. Native Arm64 applications execute directly. Windows 11 can emulate x86 and x64 user-mode applications, while Windows 10 on Arm emulates x86 only. Drivers, print components, shell extensions, and other code that integrates with Windows still need architecture-specific support. An app that opens successfully is therefore not proof that every device, plugin, or feature will work.

What Windows on Arm supports

Windows on Arm is Windows running on processors based on the Arm architecture rather than the x86 architecture used by traditional Intel and AMD PCs. The operating system presents the familiar Windows desktop, file system, security model, and application framework, but software must reach the processor through either native Arm64 code or an emulation layer.

Native Arm64 applications

An Arm64 application is compiled for the processor architecture in the PC. It does not need instruction translation, so it is the preferred route for performance, battery life, startup consistency, and access to Arm-compatible components. Microsoft describes native builds as the best path when an application is used heavily or needs predictable performance.

Emulated applications by Windows version

Windows edition Emulated application architectures What the distinction means
Windows 10 on Arm x86 32-bit x86 user-mode applications can run through emulation. x64 applications are not covered by this Windows 10 emulation model.
Windows 11 on Arm x86 and x64 Both 32-bit x86 and 64-bit x64 user-mode applications can run under emulation, subject to their dependencies and Windows version.
Windows 11 version 24H2 on supported Arm devices x86 and x64 through Prism Prism is the current Windows 11 24H2 emulator. Microsoft says it adds performance and CPU-use optimizations; availability and some optimizations depend on supported hardware.

Do not apply the Windows 11 24H2 behavior to every Windows-on-Arm installation. Check the exact Windows version in Settings > System > About and install the latest supported updates before evaluating compatibility. Prism is included with supported Windows 11 Arm devices running version 24H2. Microsoft says it is tuned for Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, and some performance features require Snapdragon X-series hardware.

How emulation translates code

Microsoft describes emulation as translating blocks of x86 instructions into Arm64 instructions while the program runs. Windows caches translated blocks so code that is executed again can avoid repeating all of the translation work. This makes ordinary user-mode applications practical, but it does not turn an x86 or x64 binary into a native Arm64 build. Translation overhead, processor features used by the program, memory behavior, and the application’s workload all affect the result.

There is no single performance penalty that applies to every emulated application. A light utility may feel normal, while a sustained CPU workload, a large development environment, or software that constantly generates code may expose the difference. Native and emulated versions should be evaluated separately rather than assuming that a launch test represents long-term battery life or speed.

Where emulation stops: drivers and system-integrated code

The most important boundary is architectural, not whether an executable file has an .exe extension. Microsoft Learn states: “Note that emulation only supports user mode code and doesn’t support drivers.”

Kernel-mode drivers

Kernel-mode drivers run inside the operating system’s privileged layer. On an Arm64 installation, they must be built as native Arm64 binaries. A Windows x86 or x64 driver cannot be made usable simply because its companion application launches under emulation.

User-mode print drivers

Print drivers that run in user mode also need a native Arm64 build. This catches people who assume that only low-level hardware drivers are affected. A printer utility may open, yet printing, scanning, status reporting, or device-specific options can remain unavailable if the required print component is not Arm64-compatible.

Installers are not a conversion tool

Microsoft’s Windows on Arm FAQ says an x86 or x64 installer cannot be executed to install an Arm64 driver. An installer that succeeds for the desktop application therefore does not prove that it installed the driver a peripheral needs. Look for an Arm64 driver package from the device manufacturer or use Windows’ built-in driver path when the manufacturer supports it.

Code loaded into Windows processes

Some components are not separate applications at all. Shell extensions, certain input method editors, assistive-technology components, and other DLLs loaded into Windows processes must match the system architecture. If such a component is x86 or x64 only, Windows may block it even while the main application runs.

Other technical blockers

Microsoft also identifies dynamic-code generation restrictions as a potential compatibility problem. Software that creates or modifies executable code at runtime may need changes for Arm or for the security and execution rules of the Windows version in use. Graphics paths can matter as well: Microsoft says x86 applications using DirectX 9, 10, 11, and 12 work in the described Arm scenario, while OpenGL-dependent software may need an application-provided DirectX mode when one is available.

Why “the app runs” does not guarantee every feature

Compatibility is best understood as a chain. The main executable may be ordinary user-mode code and therefore emulatable, while one link in the chain is architecture-specific.

  • A design application starts, but an x64 shell extension used to import files cannot load into Windows Explorer.
  • A security or accessibility tool installs its interface, but its service or system hook requires an Arm64 component.
  • A printer control panel opens, but the vendor’s print driver or scanner component is missing.
  • A game launches, but an anti-cheat, controller, virtualization, or graphics component depends on a driver that is not available for Arm64.
  • An installer completes the application portion but silently omits a driver, filter, or plug-in that the application expects.

These are not contradictions. The emulation promise applies to supported user-mode application code, not to every extension, service, driver, or peripheral path associated with that application.

Will my printer and other peripherals work on an Arm PC?

Check each essential device independently. Microsoft Support warns that some printer software installers may fail when the software does not support ARM and suggests installing the printer through Windows Settings as an alternative path.

Printer check

  1. Identify the exact printer model and operating system version.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s current support page for an Arm64 driver, not merely an x86 or x64 Windows download.
  3. Try Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device. Windows may provide a compatible class driver even when the vendor’s full installer is not Arm-aware.
  4. Test the functions you actually need: basic printing, duplexing, color management, scanning, maintenance utilities, and status notifications are separate checks.
  5. If the device is business-critical, test it on the exact Arm PC and Windows build before replacing an existing computer.

The same principle applies to scanners, audio interfaces, docking stations, specialist input devices, storage adapters, security tokens, and other hardware. A USB connection or a visible device name in Device Manager does not establish that every function has a native driver.

A practical compatibility check before buying or upgrading

Use this workflow for an essential application, not just a casual download.

  1. Record the environment. Note the Windows edition and version, Arm processor model, and whether the machine runs Windows 10 or Windows 11 24H2. Version changes alter the available emulation.
  2. Look for a native build. Check the publisher’s download page, release notes, or support documentation for an Arm64 or ARM-native edition. Prefer a signed native build when performance, battery life, or reliability matters.
  3. List dependencies. Write down drivers, hardware keys, plug-ins, shell extensions, services, add-ins, codecs, anti-cheat modules, virtual machines, and software that injects code into another process.
  4. Verify every device. For each printer or peripheral, confirm an Arm64 driver and a supported installation method. Do not rely on the architecture of the main application alone.
  5. Test a complete workflow. Open a representative file, connect the required hardware, perform an export or print job, use plug-ins, and test sleep, wake, docking, and external-display behavior if those are part of the job.
  6. Check updates and support. Install current Windows updates and the latest application and driver releases. Compatibility can change as publishers add Arm builds or fix emulation problems.

For a nonessential application, emulation may be an acceptable compromise. For a workstation, accessibility tool, scientific instrument, production printer, or security product, treat native driver availability as a purchase requirement.

Troubleshooting an app that launches poorly or loses features

1. Separate application failure from dependency failure

First test whether the application itself opens. Then test the specific feature that fails. A successful launch followed by a missing device, plug-in, or shell action points toward a dependency rather than a general emulation failure.

2. Find an Arm-native release

Check the publisher before changing system settings. A native Arm64 version can remove translation overhead and may include the correct driver, plug-in, or installer package.

3. Update the peripheral path

Install the latest Arm64 driver or use Windows Settings for supported printer installation. Remove obsolete driver packages only according to the hardware vendor’s instructions; deleting a working driver without a replacement can make recovery harder.

4. Review Prism’s per-app controls

Windows 11 provides app-specific Prism emulation settings. Microsoft describes controls affecting multi-core behavior, translation caching, hybrid execution, self-modifying-code handling, and exposed CPU features. Moving toward stricter compatibility presets can help some applications, usually with a performance cost.

5. Check graphics mode

If an x86 application’s OpenGL path fails, look for an in-app option to use DirectX. Microsoft says x86 applications using DirectX 9, 10, 11, and 12 work in the described Arm context, but the application’s own graphics requirements still apply.

6. Capture useful details for support

When contacting the publisher, provide the Windows version, Arm processor, application version, whether the failure affects launch or only a feature, the device or driver involved, and any Prism setting you changed. This is more actionable than reporting simply that “the app does not work.”

Can I run x64 apps on Windows on Arm?

Yes, on Windows 11 on Arm, x64 user-mode applications are supported through emulation. Windows 10 on Arm supports x86 emulation, not the Windows 11 x64 emulation model. Even on Windows 11, x64 support does not extend to x64 drivers or architecture-specific components loaded into system processes.

When choosing an Arm PC, confirm both the operating-system version and the application’s dependency architecture. “x64 supported” is meaningful only for the user-mode parts that Windows can emulate.

Why update my app to Arm when x64 and x86 are both supported via emulation on Windows 11?

A native Arm64 build avoids translation and can improve performance and battery life, according to Microsoft. It also gives the developer a direct path to Arm-specific testing and reduces the number of emulation edge cases users encounter. The benefit is most visible in applications that run continuously, perform heavy computation, process media, compile code, or operate on battery power.

Full Arm64 port

A full port recompiles the application and its dependencies for Arm64 and updates any architecture-specific code, installers, plug-ins, and drivers. This offers the clearest native result but may require more engineering and testing.

Incremental migration with Arm64EC

On Windows 11, Arm64EC lets Arm64EC code interoperate with x64 code in the same process. Arm64EC portions run natively, while remaining x64 portions continue to use Windows emulation. A team can therefore move performance-critical or maintainable components first instead of converting an entire codebase in one release. The migration still requires careful review of third-party libraries, plug-ins, build tools, and any kernel-mode or system-integrated components.

How to compare an Arm PC with a conventional x86 PC

Decision factor Questions to answer Why it matters
Windows version and emulator Is it Windows 10, Windows 11, or Windows 11 24H2 with Prism? The supported emulated architectures differ by version.
Application architecture Is there a native Arm64 build, or only x86/x64? Native code avoids emulation; emulated code may have workload-dependent overhead.
Drivers and services Does the workflow require kernel drivers, print drivers, services, shell extensions, or injected DLLs? These components generally need native Arm64 support and are outside ordinary app emulation.
Peripherals Are Arm64 drivers and Arm-compatible installers available for every essential device? A missing driver can disable a feature even when the main application runs.
Graphics Does the software use DirectX, OpenGL, or a specialized hardware path? Graphics APIs and vendor components can create separate compatibility requirements.
Performance and battery Is the workload sustained, computationally heavy, or mobile? Microsoft identifies native Arm64 as the best performance and battery path; no universal benchmark applies to all emulated apps.
Developer roadmap Can the vendor ship Arm64 or use Arm64EC? Native and incremental migration options reduce long-term dependence on emulation.

The practical verdict

Windows on Arm is not an all-or-nothing compatibility platform. Windows 11, especially version 24H2 with Prism on supported hardware, can run a broad range of x86 and x64 desktop applications. The hard boundary is the software around those applications: drivers, user-mode print drivers, system-loaded DLLs, certain graphics paths, dynamic-code behavior, installers, and peripheral utilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying or deploying an Arm PC, test the complete workflow that matters, not merely whether an executable opens. Verify the Windows version, seek native Arm64 releases, confirm every driver and peripheral, and use Prism settings only as controlled troubleshooting. For developers, a native Arm64 build is the long-term performance path, while Arm64EC provides a staged migration option on Windows 11.
