I wouldn’t turn every Windows notification off by default. A better balance is to disable interruptions from low-priority apps, keep useful notices available in Notification Center, and use Do Not Disturb or Focus when you need a temporary quiet period.
Choose how much of Windows you want to silence
Windows separates notification controls by scope and by how a notice reaches you. You can disable notifications everywhere, silence selected apps, or suppress most pop-up banners temporarily while keeping notices available to review later.

How to turn off or tune Windows notifications
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications. The exact menu details may vary by Windows version.
- To silence everything, switch Notifications off. This is the broadest option: it also removes notices you might want to see.
- For a selective setup, leave the main switch on and choose apps under Notifications from apps and other senders.
- For each app, choose whether it can send notifications, show banners, appear in Notification Center, display content on the lock screen, or play a sound. These are separate controls, so you can keep a notice for later without allowing a pop-up or sound.
- Use the priority setting when some senders should be allowed through Do Not Disturb. Windows offers Top, High and Normal priority; only one app can be set to Top.
A practical starting point is to turn off notifications from senders that rarely need immediate attention, then remove banners or sounds from apps whose messages are useful but not urgent. Keep the apps and reminders you genuinely need to notice. The right balance depends on what you use the PC for.

Disabling an app prevents it from notifying you; Do Not Disturb handles interruptions differently. It suppresses most banners while keeping other notifications in Notification Center. Microsoft describes the behavior this way: “Other notifications are sent directly to the notification center until you turn it off.” Alarms, reminders and apps you select can still show banners, and priority notifications can allow calls, reminders and chosen apps through.
To switch it on manually, open Notification Center and select the bell or “zZ” Do Not Disturb control. Return to Notification Center to switch it off and review notifications that arrived while banners were suppressed. You can configure priority exceptions and automatic activation rules under Settings > System > Notifications.
Set automatic quiet times or conditions
Windows can turn on Do Not Disturb during selected hours, when you duplicate a display, while gaming, while using a full-screen app, or during the first hour after a Windows feature update. These rules suit predictable situations where pop-ups are unwelcome, while leaving you free to keep ordinary notifications enabled at other times.
Use Focus for a temporary work session
For a defined block of concentration, start a Focus session from Settings > System > Focus, the notification or calendar area, or the Clock app. Starting a session turns on Do Not Disturb by default. You can also choose whether to hide taskbar badges and flashing indicators. Notifications received during the session can be reviewed in Notification Center.

If Do Not Disturb was already on before you start Focus, Microsoft says it remains on after the session ends. Focus sessions require the Clock app; if Windows Clock has been uninstalled, Microsoft’s documented route is to reinstall Windows Clock from Microsoft Store.

Keep Windows Security notices in perspective
Windows Security has separate notification categories for Virus & threat protection, Account protection, and Firewall and network protection. Its settings cover informational notices, such as successful blocks or completed scans. Microsoft says some threat notifications that require immediate action will always appear, so turning down routine notices is not the same as suppressing every urgent warning.
Check whether your device is managed
On a work or school PC, an administrator may fix or restrict notification settings. If a control is unavailable or changes back after you adjust it, the device may be managed; check with your organization’s IT team rather than assuming Windows is ignoring the setting.

Windows version matters
Microsoft’s notifications guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but its support page notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The controls discussed here are documented for both, though menu details can differ. For an actively supported Windows installation, check which version your device runs before following version-specific menu directions.

What I would change first
- Keep the system-wide notification switch on unless you truly want no app notifications.
- Disable senders that do not need to reach you promptly.
- For useful but non-urgent apps, keep Notification Center delivery and turn off banners or sound.
- Use Do Not Disturb’s schedule or activity rules for recurring quiet periods, and Focus for a temporary session.
- Review Notification Center when you want to catch up on notices that did not appear as banners.
