Memory integrity and antivirus protect different parts of a Windows PC. Memory integrity—Microsoft’s name for Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI)—hardens the Windows kernel by running kernel-mode code-integrity checks inside an isolated virtualization-based security environment. Antivirus is a separate antimalware layer whose detection and response features depend on the product and version. Memory integrity complements antivirus; it does not replace it.
What memory integrity protects
Memory integrity is a Windows security feature built on virtualization-based security (VBS). Its job is to protect the integrity of kernel-mode code—the privileged code used by Windows and hardware drivers. Microsoft describes it as running kernel-mode code integrity inside an isolated virtual environment of VBS.
The isolation matters because code-integrity enforcement is separated from the ordinary Windows kernel. Malware that gains a foothold in the operating system may try to tamper with security checks, load an untrusted driver, or alter kernel memory. Memory integrity is designed to make those attacks harder by keeping the code-integrity decision in a protected environment.

Kernel mode versus ordinary applications
Windows applications normally run in user mode, where a crash is generally confined to that process. Kernel-mode code runs with much broader privileges and includes substantial portions of the operating system and many hardware drivers. A malicious or defective kernel driver can therefore affect security controls, memory, devices, and system stability. Memory integrity concentrates on this privileged layer rather than trying to inspect every user-mode action.

How the kernel-memory rule works
Windows checks kernel drivers and other kernel-mode binaries before they start. Memory integrity also restricts kernel-memory allocations that could be used to compromise the system. A kernel-memory page must pass code-integrity checks inside the secure runtime environment before Windows can make it executable, and executable pages cannot be writable at the same time.
Microsoft summarizes the rule this way: kernel memory pages become executable only after passing code-integrity checks inside the secure runtime environment, and executable pages themselves are never writable. The write-versus-execute separation targets a class of attacks in which malicious code is injected into memory and then executed with kernel privileges.
This is a hardening measure, not a guarantee that every malicious program, exploit, or unsafe driver will be stopped. A threat may use a different path, exploit an application, abuse a trusted component, or operate entirely in user mode.
Threats it can help frustrate
- Attempts to load or start kernel-mode code that fails Windows code-integrity checks.
- Attempts to alter kernel memory so that attacker-controlled instructions become executable.
- Some attacks that rely on writable-and-executable kernel pages or on bypassing ordinary kernel security enforcement.
- Malware that attempts to exploit the Windows kernel after reaching the machine through another route.
- Some tampering attempts aimed at weakening the code-integrity mechanism itself, because its decisions run in an isolated VBS environment.
These are bounded protections. Memory integrity does not scan every file, inspect every email attachment, classify a website, or determine whether a user-level application is malicious. It also cannot make an already compromised system trustworthy by itself. Its value is reducing the ways an attacker can turn privileged kernel access into persistent or stealthy code execution.
What antivirus protects
Antivirus is a separate antimalware protection category. It generally operates as a security product that evaluates files, programs, activity, or other signals for malicious behavior, but the exact features, detection methods, response actions, update model, and coverage depend on the particular product and version.
Because antivirus products differ, there is no single feature list that can accurately describe every product. Some may include protections beyond basic malware detection, while others may emphasize different operating-system components or management controls. This comparison does not rank antivirus products or claim that they all detect the same threats.
Why antivirus remains necessary
Many attacks never need to modify the Windows kernel. A malicious document, compromised installer, unsafe script, credential-stealing program, or user-level payload can cause harm without loading a kernel driver. Memory integrity is not designed to be a general-purpose antimalware scanner, so it does not substitute for a product that provides that type of protection.
Antivirus can address the initial stages of an incident: identifying suspicious content, blocking or quarantining a malicious program, and helping remove a detected threat. It may also monitor activity after a program starts, depending on the product. The available actions and their reliability vary by product and configuration, so readers should consult the documentation for the antivirus they use rather than assuming that one product’s behavior applies to all products.
Antivirus and memory integrity can therefore respond to different moments in the same attack. An antimalware product might flag a downloaded executable, while HVCI can make a later attempt to install or execute an untrusted kernel driver more difficult. Neither layer is a substitute for secure software updates, careful account practices, or other controls.
Side-by-side comparison
| Question | Memory integrity (HVCI) | Antivirus |
|---|---|---|
| Primary security layer | Windows kernel code integrity and kernel-memory protections | Antimalware protection; exact coverage depends on the product and version |
| Core mechanism | Uses Windows VBS to isolate kernel-mode code-integrity checks and restrict executable kernel memory | Product-specific detection and response mechanisms; no single mechanism applies to every product |
| Typical target | Untrusted or tampered kernel code, unsafe driver loading, and some attempts to inject or alter kernel code | Malicious files, programs, activity, or other signals covered by the particular product |
| Does it scan for malware? | Not a general antimalware scan | Scanning and detection are part of the antimalware category, but capabilities vary |
| Where it runs | Kernel code-integrity enforcement is isolated with VBS | Depends on the product’s architecture and Windows integration |
| Relationship | Windows platform hardening that can operate alongside antivirus | Separate security layer; not replaced by HVCI |
| Main caveat | Requires compatible hardware, firmware, drivers, and applications | Coverage and behavior vary by product, release, and configuration |
The table deliberately avoids assigning detection categories to every antivirus product. A particular vendor may document capabilities that another does not, and those capabilities can change between releases. Compare the product documentation and management settings for the antivirus actually installed on the PC.

How the two layers work together
Layered security gives each control a narrower, more defensible responsibility. Antivirus can address a malicious file or program before it reaches the kernel. If an attacker does reach a privileged part of Windows, memory integrity adds restrictions around kernel code execution and memory permissions.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft documents memory integrity and App Control as separable controls that can be deployed together. App Control governs which code is allowed to run; memory integrity hardens the environment in which Windows enforces kernel code integrity. Combining those controls with an antivirus layer is a defense-in-depth approach, not evidence that any one layer blocks every attack.
Consider a hypothetical chain: a user downloads a program, antivirus evaluates it according to its own policies, and the program later tries to install a kernel driver. Memory integrity supplies a different check at that privileged stage. If the attack instead abuses a legitimate user-mode application or steals a password without loading kernel code, HVCI may not address the central problem. The layers reduce different portions of risk.
Does memory integrity replace antivirus?
No. Memory integrity is a kernel-defense feature, while antivirus is an antimalware layer. Turning on memory integrity does not provide the broad detection and response role of antivirus, and installing antivirus does not make kernel hardening unnecessary. They address different stages and surfaces of an attack.
Check whether memory integrity is available and enabled
The labels and available controls can vary with the Windows edition, release, and hardware. On a supported system, Microsoft places the setting here:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Device security.
- Open Core isolation details.
- Find Memory integrity and read its current state.
The page may show that the control is on, off, unavailable, or blocked by an incompatible driver. Read the status message instead of treating the presence of a switch as proof that the feature is active. A policy-managed computer may also restrict what a local user can change.
If the option is missing, unavailable, or cannot be enabled, that does not by itself indicate malware. The system may lack required virtualization support, have virtualization disabled in firmware, or contain an incompatible driver or application. Windows version and hardware determine which core-isolation controls appear.
Confirm virtualization-based security in System Information
Windows System Information can provide a second view of the security state. Open System Information, commonly by launching msinfo32, and review the entries describing virtualization-based security services and Hypervisor-enforced Code Integrity. The exact wording and fields depend on the Windows version.
Use this view to distinguish a feature that is supported from one that is actually running. A processor may support virtualization while the firmware setting remains disabled, or Windows may report that VBS services are not running even though the hardware is capable. Check both the Windows Security page and System Information after changing firmware or driver settings.
Requirements before enabling memory integrity
Hardware virtualization
Hardware virtualization must be available and enabled in the computer’s UEFI or BIOS firmware. The setting name differs among manufacturers. It may be grouped with processor virtualization, CPU virtualization, or a similar firmware option.

Changing firmware settings affects the whole operating system. Follow the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions, save the change, and reboot before checking the Windows Security page again. If you cannot identify the setting, use the manufacturer’s support documentation rather than changing unrelated firmware options. On a managed device, coordinate firmware changes with the administrator because organizational policies may control VBS.
Compatible drivers and applications
Memory integrity can expose drivers that rely on behavior incompatible with the protected code-integrity environment. Microsoft warns that some hardware drivers and applications may malfunction when the feature is enabled; in rare cases, incompatibility can lead to a boot failure.
Older peripherals, specialized utilities, and software that installs low-level components deserve particular attention. Compatibility is not determined only by whether an application launches; a driver-dependent device can lose functionality, behave unpredictably, or fail after a restart. Test the functions you actually need, including printing, storage, networking, graphics, and security software.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA warning about an incompatible driver is not proof that the computer is infected. It means Windows has identified a compatibility problem that must be resolved before the driver can operate under the selected protections.
What to do when Windows reports an incompatible driver
- Record the driver name and any hardware or application Windows identifies.
- Visit the hardware or application manufacturer’s support channel and look for an updated driver that explicitly supports your Windows release and memory-integrity requirements.
- Install the manufacturer-provided update using its documented procedure, then restart the PC.
- Return to Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details and check the memory-integrity status again.
- If no compatible update exists, decide whether the dependent device or application is essential. Microsoft identifies removing the device or application that depends on the incompatible driver as another option.
Do not download a replacement driver from an unverified download site merely to clear the warning. A driver is kernel-mode code, so its source and compatibility are especially important. Keep the original driver or a recovery plan available until the updated installation has been tested.
If the computer stops booting
Microsoft describes boot failure as a rare result of incompatibility. If a change prevents normal startup, use the manufacturer’s recovery instructions or Windows recovery options to return the machine to a working configuration, then obtain a compatible driver from the manufacturer. Avoid repeatedly toggling firmware options without recording what changed; that can make diagnosis harder.
Managed environments should test the setting on a small group of representative machines before broader deployment. Include different hardware models, processor generations, driver sets, and business-critical applications in the pilot. Record startup reliability, device functionality, application behavior, and the final VBS status before expanding deployment.

Performance and compatibility trade-offs
Enabling a virtualization-based kernel protection can change how some processors, drivers, and applications behave. The effect is hardware- and workload-dependent, so a universal performance percentage would be misleading. The official guidance establishes compatibility as a consideration but does not provide a single comparative benchmark for all PCs.
For a personal computer, check the applications and peripherals you rely on—especially older hardware—before enabling the control. Save work and plan a restart. If a device is business-critical, identify its manufacturer support path and a way to recover before changing the setting.
For an organization, test a representative pilot group that includes different processor generations, device models, drivers, and workloads. Record application behavior, device functionality, startup reliability, and any security-policy conflicts before expanding deployment. A successful result on one modern laptop does not prove that every older desktop, workstation, or specialized device will behave the same way.

Common misunderstandings
“Memory integrity is another name for antivirus.”
It is not. Memory integrity is HVCI, a Windows VBS feature that protects kernel code integrity and kernel memory. Antivirus is a separate antimalware category.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“If memory integrity is on, malware cannot run.”
That is too broad. The feature helps protect against attempts to exploit the Windows kernel and constrains how kernel memory becomes executable. Malware that runs in user mode, abuses a trusted application, steals credentials, or uses a different attack path may not be stopped by those rules.
“An incompatible-driver message means the PC is infected.”
No. The message indicates a compatibility issue. Update the driver through its manufacturer, or remove the dependent device or application if an update is unavailable.
“Antivirus makes memory integrity redundant.”
No. Antivirus and HVCI cover different security layers. A product that detects malicious files does not automatically provide the kernel-memory restrictions implemented by memory integrity.
“Every antivirus product offers the same protection.”
No. Detection coverage, response behavior, supported Windows releases, management features, and performance characteristics vary by product and version. Evaluate the documentation for the specific antivirus deployment rather than applying a claim about one product to all others.
“Turning on the switch proves HVCI is protecting the PC.”
Not necessarily. Confirm the resulting state in Windows Security and, where available, check the VBS and Hypervisor-enforced Code Integrity entries in System Information. Firmware, policy, or a failed initialization can affect whether the protection is actually running.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run antivirus with memory integrity enabled?
Yes. They are separate security layers and are intended to coexist when the antivirus product and its drivers are compatible with the Windows configuration.
Is memory integrity available on every Windows PC?
No. Availability depends on the Windows version, hardware virtualization support, firmware settings, policy, and compatible drivers. The Windows Security page shows which controls your system exposes.
Will enabling memory integrity remove a virus?
No. HVCI is not a cleanup scanner. Use the installed antivirus or another appropriate antimalware process to investigate and remove detected threats, then address any kernel-hardening or driver issues separately.

Does App Control replace memory integrity or antivirus?
No. App Control governs which code is allowed to run. Memory integrity hardens kernel code-integrity enforcement, and antivirus supplies a separate antimalware layer. They can be deployed together.
Can memory integrity guarantee that a kernel exploit will fail?
No security control offers that guarantee. HVCI helps frustrate specified attempts to load or modify kernel code and restricts executable kernel memory, but attackers may use vulnerabilities or paths outside those rules.
Bottom line
Memory integrity is a Windows kernel-hardening control. It uses VBS to isolate code-integrity checks, requires kernel memory to pass those checks before becoming executable, and prevents executable pages from being writable. Antivirus is a separate antimalware layer whose capabilities depend on the product and version. The sound configuration is not “one or the other”: use antivirus for antimalware coverage and memory integrity for additional kernel protection when your hardware and software are compatible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does memory integrity replace antivirus?
No. Memory integrity protects kernel code integrity and kernel memory through VBS; antivirus provides a separate antimalware detection and response layer.
Can antivirus and memory integrity run together?
Yes, provided the antivirus product, its drivers, and the Windows configuration are compatible. The two controls address different security layers.
What should I do about an incompatible-driver warning?
Treat it as a compatibility issue, not proof of infection. Check the hardware or application manufacturer for an updated compatible driver, or remove the dependent device or application if no update exists.
How do I check whether HVCI is enabled?
Open Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details > Memory integrity. You can also review VBS and Hypervisor-enforced Code Integrity entries in System Information (msinfo32).
Can enabling memory integrity cause problems?
Some drivers or applications may malfunction, and Microsoft says incompatibility can rarely cause a boot failure. Test important devices and applications first and keep a recovery plan.
The Bottom Line
Use antivirus for broad antimalware coverage and memory integrity for additional Windows kernel protection. They complement each other, subject to hardware, firmware, driver, and application compatibility.
