There is no honest platform-wide winner. A Windows laptop can be exceptionally easy to upgrade, or nearly impossible to open without replacing large assemblies. MacBooks likewise vary by model and component. If your priority is adding RAM, replacing an SSD, or changing the processor platform later, a documented modular Windows model such as Framework Laptop 13 offers more clearly defined options than a typical MacBook. If your priority is access to official repair instructions and parts, Apple and Microsoft both publish support for selected models.

The right comparison is therefore exact model versus exact model. Before buying or repairing, identify the laptop’s generation, check the service guide for the component you care about, confirm that the part is sold in your region, and verify the tools, skill, warranty and out-of-warranty implications.

The short answer: model and component matter more than operating system

“Windows laptop” describes an enormous range of hardware. It includes inexpensive machines with memory or storage that cannot be reached without major disassembly, business notebooks with serviceable components, and unusually modular products designed around replacement parts. “MacBook” is also a family of different generations and configurations, not one fixed service design.

That makes a blanket statement such as “Windows laptops are easier to repair than MacBooks” inaccurate. A better rule is:

  • For repair support, Apple and Microsoft publish model-specific manuals, parts information and procedures for selected products.
  • For any purchase, the exact model and the exact part determine what you can replace, how difficult the work is, and whether an upgrade is possible at all.

Official sources do not establish a current, directly comparable repairability score for MacBooks versus Windows laptops as categories. The evidence supports a model-by-model decision, not a platform-wide numerical ranking.

Repairability and upgradeability are different questions

Repairability means restoring a failed component

Repairability concerns a part that is already faulty: a battery that no longer holds charge, a cracked display, a damaged keyboard, a failed charging board or another defective module. A repair may involve replacing the failed part with an identical or compatible part. It does not necessarily make the computer more capable than when it was purchased.

Upgradeability means adding capability after purchase

Upgradeability covers changes such as installing more memory, fitting a larger storage drive, or moving to a newer processor platform. An upgrade requires more than an accessible screw. The replacement part must be electrically compatible, fit the enclosure, be recognized by firmware and the operating system, and be available for the exact model.

A service manual proves that a manufacturer has documented a repair procedure. It does not prove that RAM or storage can be expanded. Apple’s repair manuals, Microsoft’s Surface guides and Framework’s guides must each be read for the particular component and model.

How Apple’s MacBook repair program works

Apple provides a model-specific process

Apple’s Self Service Repair information is aimed at people who have knowledge and experience repairing electronic devices. The process starts with the manual for the exact MacBook model. That manual identifies the steps, replacement parts, tools and materials for the selected repair. For supported repairs, Apple directs owners to genuine parts and to professional-grade tools that can be rented or purchased through its Self Service Repair Store.

This is meaningful repair support, but it has a defined scope. The manual and parts lookup determine whether Apple supports the particular model and repair. Availability can vary by country, and Apple presents self-service repairs in an out-of-warranty context. Check warranty status and local availability before opening the computer.

A manual is not an upgrade promise

Apple publishes a repair manual for the MacBook Air (13-inch, M4, 2025). That establishes that Apple documents repairs for that model. It does not establish that its memory or storage can be replaced or expanded by the owner. Do not infer upgradeability from the existence of a manual; look for an explicit procedure and a listed compatible part.

Why the 2022 announcement needs context

Apple announced Self Service Repair for M1 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro notebooks in August 2022, initially offering manuals, genuine parts and tools through its store. That announcement describes the program’s launch and should not be treated as a complete current compatibility list. The current manual and parts lookup for the MacBook in front of you are the authoritative checks.

How Windows laptop repair support varies

Microsoft Surface: selected parts and device-specific guides

Microsoft’s Surface self-repair information is also limited to a select range of replacement components and devices. Microsoft says technically experienced users can use the relevant service guide with the required tools, and it organizes its guide center by Surface model. Tools are sold separately through iFixit.

That documentation establishes a repair path for supported Surface devices. It does not turn every Surface model, every component or every Windows laptop into a user-serviceable machine. Start with the exact Surface model, identify the part, and confirm that Microsoft lists both a procedure and an available replacement.

Framework Laptop 13: a documented modular example

Framework Laptop 13 shows why “Windows laptop” is too broad a category. Framework documents standard M.2 SSD storage, upgradeable memory and processor-generation upgrades through a mainboard replacement. It offers the model as a Windows 11 prebuilt system as well as a DIY configuration. Its product information says every part is replaceable with the included tool; that is a manufacturer claim, so the practical difficulty and compatibility still depend on the model and guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The storage point is especially concrete: a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD can be replaced or enlarged when its dimensions and interface match the laptop. That does not mean the same drive will fit every Windows laptop or any MacBook. Check the exact slot, keying, length and supported capacity before buying a drive.

What “upgradeable processor” means in this design

Framework’s mainboard replacement guide rates the task as Moderate and estimates 15–30 minutes. The estimate belongs to that guide; it is not a guarantee for every owner, configuration or future revision. The procedure transfers the memory, storage and Wi-Fi modules to the replacement board.

In other words, the processor is not a socketed chip that you remove independently. A processor-generation upgrade means changing the mainboard, then moving compatible modules to it. That can extend the useful life of the chassis, but it is a more substantial job than inserting a new memory module or SSD.

Who should attempt the work People with knowledge and experience repairing electronic devices. Technically experienced people with the required knowledge and tools. Follow the part-specific guide and honestly assess your skill before beginning.

How to evaluate any laptop before you buy it

  1. Record the exact identity. Write down the manufacturer, product family, screen size, processor generation, model number and release year. “Windows 11 laptop” or “MacBook Pro” is not specific enough.
  2. Name the component you may need to change. Decide whether your concern is battery, display, keyboard, storage, memory, charging hardware or the mainboard. A laptop can be easy to service in one area and difficult in another.
  3. Find the manufacturer’s current guide. Look for a service manual, repair manual or replacement guide for that exact model. Confirm that the guide covers your component rather than a nearby generation.
  4. Check whether the part is actually sold. Documentation without an available replacement does not complete a repair. Confirm genuine or compatible part availability in your country and note whether the listing is current, limited or out of stock.
  5. Read the parts and tools list. Identify screwdrivers, spudgers, adhesives, calibration equipment and any consumables. Microsoft states that its Surface tools are sold separately; Apple lists the tools and materials for the selected repair.
  6. Check the skill and risk level. Follow the guide’s stated difficulty and estimate, but treat them as guidance rather than a promise. Disconnect power, protect against electrostatic discharge where the guide requires it, and stop if a connector or cable does not release as described.
  7. Review warranty and service consequences. Apple frames Self Service Repair as an out-of-warranty path, and Microsoft describes selected parts for out-of-warranty repairs. Confirm the effect on your coverage before opening the chassis.
  8. Verify the post-repair requirements. Some repairs may require firmware setup, operating-system checks, battery health verification, display testing or data restoration. Back up data before any procedure.

What to check for each component

Battery

Battery replacement is a repair rather than an upgrade. Confirm that the manufacturer lists a battery for your exact model, whether adhesive or special tools are required, and whether the procedure replaces only the battery or a larger top-case or keyboard assembly. A guide that covers battery replacement is useful evidence of serviceability, but it says nothing about RAM or SSD expansion.

Display

Ask whether the guide treats the screen as a separate module or as part of a complete display assembly. Check the connector, panel variant, camera and antenna placement, and whether calibration or a post-repair test is specified. A less expensive bare panel is not automatically compatible with the original lid or cable.

Keyboard and top case

Keyboard repairs can be deceptively difficult when the keyboard, palm rest, speakers, battery or trackpad are integrated into one assembly. The part list and guide reveal whether you can replace the failed keyboard alone. Compare the labor and the price of the complete assembly before deciding whether self-repair is worthwhile.

Storage

For an M.2 design, verify the physical length, interface and supported capacity. Framework documents standard M.2 SSD storage for Laptop 13, making a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD a defined upgrade route for that model. Do not generalize that route to every Windows laptop, and do not assume a MacBook’s repair manual confirms user-replaceable storage.

Memory

Look for an explicit memory-upgrade procedure and a listed module type. “The laptop can be opened” is not enough: memory may be integrated, limited to a specific capacity, or inaccessible even when other parts are serviceable. Framework explicitly documents upgradeable memory for Laptop 13; for other models, verify the manufacturer’s own specification and guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Processor and mainboard

Processor upgrades require the most caution. Framework’s documented route is a new mainboard, followed by transfer of memory, storage and Wi-Fi modules. That is different from a socketed CPU replacement and may involve firmware, compatibility and cost considerations. For a MacBook, Surface device or another Windows laptop, do not claim a processor upgrade unless the exact manufacturer documentation describes one.

Skills, tools and risk: who should do the work?

Self-repair is not simply a matter of removing screws. Apple says its program is intended for people experienced with electronic repairs. Microsoft similarly recommends self-repair only for technically experienced users who have the required knowledge and tools. Those warnings matter because a torn flex cable, damaged connector or misplaced screw can turn a single-part repair into a larger failure.

Use the official guide as a safety document, not just an assembly diagram. Read the entire procedure before ordering a part, note every warning, photograph cable routing when the guide permits it, and keep screws organized by location. Never force a connector that is still latched, and do not reuse adhesive or seals when the guide calls for new material.

Framework’s 15–30-minute mainboard estimate illustrates how to interpret manufacturer timings: it describes one documented task under assumed conditions. It is not a comparative score, and it does not include downloading software, diagnosing the original fault, waiting for a part or recovering from a mistake.

Geography, parts availability and ownership cost

Repairability on paper can differ from repairability where you live. Before purchase or repair, confirm that the manual, parts store and tools are available in your country, that the replacement is intended for your regional model, and that shipping or import restrictions do not make the part impractical.

Do not assume a published part will remain available indefinitely. Save the model number and guide while the product is supported, and compare the cost of a part, tools and your time with an authorized repair. The available evidence does not provide a common price list for MacBooks, Surface devices and Framework Laptop 13, so a universal cost ranking would be misleading.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Comparing operating systems instead of models: replace the platform label with the exact product and generation.
  • Treating a repair manual as an upgrade specification: verify separate procedures for memory, storage and processor changes.
  • Assuming every Windows laptop accepts an M.2 drive: check the slot, interface, dimensions and firmware support.
  • Calling a mainboard swap a CPU swap: describe Framework’s processor path accurately as a board replacement with module transfer.
  • Ignoring tool and skill requirements: Apple and Microsoft both place experience caveats on self-repair.
  • Overlooking warranty status: Apple presents Self Service Repair as out of warranty, while Microsoft’s selected-part guidance also addresses out-of-warranty work.
  • Using an old announcement as a current compatibility list: Apple’s 2022 M1 announcement is historical; use the current manual and parts lookup for the MacBook you own.
  • Buying before confirming the part: match the replacement’s exact model, revision and regional availability first.

Which choice fits your priorities?

Your priority What to choose What to verify
You want to add memory or replace storage later A Windows model with explicit, documented upgrade procedures; Framework Laptop 13 is a clear documented example. Memory type, M.2 dimensions and interface, maximum supported capacity, and current parts.
You want official instructions for a specific repair Any supported MacBook or Surface model with a current manufacturer guide for that component. Exact model, part availability, tools, skill level and warranty status.
You want a processor-generation path A design that documents the path, such as Framework Laptop 13’s mainboard replacement approach. Board compatibility, module transfer steps, firmware requirements and total cost.
You want the simplest ownership decision Choose the model whose manual explicitly covers the component you care about, rather than relying on the Windows or Mac label. Regional support, available parts and whether professional service is preferable.

Bottom line for buyers

Choose by documented component support, not by operating system. If after-purchase expansion is central to your decision, a modular Windows laptop such as Framework Laptop 13 has clearer published options for memory, standard M.2 storage and processor-generation changes through a mainboard replacement. If you are considering a MacBook or Surface device, use the current model-specific manual and parts information to establish what can actually be repaired.

The most reliable buying rule is simple: name the part you may need to replace, find the guide for the exact model, confirm the part and tools are available, and then decide whether the required skill and warranty trade-offs fit you. That process is more accurate than declaring all Windows laptops or all MacBooks easier to repair.
