To stop Insider Preview builds on a Windows 11 PC, open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Stop Insider Preview Builds and choose the option offered for that device. Microsoft says devices in Beta, Experimental, and Release Preview can return to a retail build this way. Experimental (Future Platforms) is the exception: leaving it requires a clean installation.

Check your build and Insider channel first

The route depends on which build and channel the PC is running. Find the Windows version and build in Settings > System > About, or run winver. Then check the channel at Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program. Microsoft notes that available options and timing can vary by build. See Microsoft’s guidance on managing Insider settings.

Stop preview builds on this PC

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
  2. Select Stop Insider Preview Builds.
  3. Choose the option currently offered for the device and follow the prompts. Microsoft says this can return devices in Beta, Experimental, and Release Preview to a retail Windows build. The exact option and when the change takes effect depend on the installed build and channel. See Microsoft’s Windows Insider troubleshooting guidance.

What to do if the stop-builds option will not return you to retail Windows

Experimental (Future Platforms)

Microsoft says devices on Experimental (Future Platforms) must be clean-installed to leave the program because that development build does not align with a retail Windows build. Back up important files before reinstalling. Microsoft’s overview of Windows Insider Preview builds explains the build and channel distinctions.

Rollback may still be available

Microsoft says rollback to the previous build may be available for up to 10 days after installing an update, or until the next build is taken. This is not a guarantee that rollback will return every device to retail Windows. Back up important files before attempting recovery; Microsoft recommends doing so before rolling back or reinstalling. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance.

Use the right recovery method

Reset this PC does not itself convert an Insider installation to retail Windows. Microsoft says it reinstalls the same build already installed. For a return to the PC’s original operating system, Microsoft Support describes using an appropriate Windows recovery image after backing up information you want to keep. See Microsoft’s explanation of Reset this PC and rollback and Microsoft Support’s Insider and recovery guidance.

Device unenrollment and leaving the Insider program are separate

Stopping preview builds applies to the device. Leaving or unregistering from the Windows Insider Program is a separate account-level step, used if you also want to stop program emails and remove your account registration. Leaving the program does not, by itself, unenroll a PC or stop its preview builds; use Windows Settings for the device as well. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page describes both actions.

When the PC is managed by work

If the device is organization-managed, a non-administrator may not have permission to change its enrollment. The organization may need to leave the program or adjust the device’s settings. See Microsoft’s Windows Insider troubleshooting guidance.

Why registry deletion is not the standard reset

Microsoft’s documented route is to unenroll through Settings and, when required by the build, use the appropriate rollback, recovery, or clean-install path. The official instructions cited above do not present deleting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsSelfHost as the standard way to reset Insider settings. Avoid treating that registry change as Microsoft’s recommended procedure.
