Windows Pro includes Hyper-V, Microsoft’s built-in virtualization platform, as an optional feature. You can use it to create and run virtual machines without downloading a separate Hyper-V product—but you do not have to enable it simply because you have Pro. The claim that most Pro users have never opened it is a conversational hook, not a measured statistic: the cited Microsoft documentation does not report user awareness or usage rates.

What is Hyper-V used for?

Microsoft describes Hyper-V as a type-1 hypervisor: software that lets a computer run virtual machines (VMs). A VM behaves like a separate computer, with its own virtual hardware and operating system, while sharing the physical host’s resources. Microsoft positions the Windows client feature for development and testing.

  • Try another operating system without replacing Windows on the physical PC.
  • Test software or configuration changes in a separate environment.
  • Keep distinct development environments for different projects.

These are possible uses, not a guarantee that every workload will run well on every PC. A VM shares the host’s processor, memory, and storage, so what it can handle depends on the computer and the resources assigned to it.

Which Windows editions include Hyper-V?

Hyper-V is an optional Windows feature, not a separate product download. Microsoft’s Windows 11 overview lists Hyper-V for Pro, Enterprise, and Education; its installation guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise. Windows Home cannot install the full Hyper-V role. Check the documentation for your Windows version and edition before following setup steps, because edition availability can vary by release. Microsoft’s installation guide explains the supported editions and methods.

What does Hyper-V need to run?

Microsoft lists these general hardware and firmware requirements:

  • [Display] 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) Display
  • [Tech Specs] 1 x USB 3.0 Type-A, 1 x USB 2.0 Type-A, 1 x USB Type-C, 1 x HDMI, 1 x RJ45, 1 x headphone/microphone combo, Webcam, Numeric Keypad, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • [Operating System] Windows 11 Pro - Organize open apps with pre-configured layouts to optimize productivity, Navigate with more intuitive experience to get things done, Collaborate with teams with more features
  • A 64-bit processor with Second Level Address Translation (SLAT).
  • VM Monitor Mode extensions.
  • Hardware-assisted virtualization—Intel VT or AMD-V—enabled in BIOS or UEFI.
  • Hardware-enforced Data Execution Prevention (DEP).
  • Enough memory for Windows and any VMs running at the same time.

Microsoft’s installation guide gives 4 GB as a minimum requirement, but that figure is not a recommendation for running several VMs. The host and concurrently running VMs need sufficient memory; more memory is better. Check Microsoft’s Hyper-V requirements for the complete list and details.

Check compatibility with Systeminfo.exe

  1. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and run systeminfo.exe.
  2. Find the Hyper-V Requirements section in the output. If each listed requirement reports “Yes,” the system meets the listed requirements to run the role.
  3. If the output says a hypervisor has been detected, the requirements section may show that message instead. It does not mean the same thing as seeing “Yes” for every item.

If virtualization is disabled in firmware, enable the relevant Intel VT or AMD-V option in BIOS/UEFI, then check again. The exact menu name and location depend on the PC and its firmware.

How do I enable Hyper-V in Windows 11 Pro?

On a supported Windows edition, you can enable Hyper-V from Windows Features or with an elevated PowerShell command. The hardware and firmware requirements still apply, and a restart is required to complete installation.

Use Windows Features

  1. Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
  2. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  3. Select Hyper-V and confirm the change. If Windows prompts you to restart, restart the PC.

Use elevated PowerShell

  1. Open PowerShell as an administrator.
  2. Run Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V -All.
  3. Restart if prompted to finish enabling the feature.

Microsoft documents both methods in its Hyper-V installation guide.

What do you need to create your first VM?

After enabling Hyper-V, use Hyper-V Manager or PowerShell to create a VM. You will need enough physical memory for Windows and the VM, plus enough disk space for the VM’s files and virtual disk. The operating system can be installed from an ISO image or supplied by an existing VHD or VHDX file. If the VM needs network access, configure a virtual switch; networking is optional if the VM does not need it. Microsoft’s VM creation guide walks through the setup. Windows 11 also offers Quick Create for a more streamlined setup. Microsoft’s Windows 11 overview describes that feature.

Option Best fit Control and persistence
Hyper-V VM General operating-system testing, software testing, or a distinct development environment. A configurable VM managed through Hyper-V Manager or PowerShell.
Windows Sandbox A separate, temporary isolated Windows session. A different Windows isolation feature; its configuration documentation says it uses the Hyper-V default switch. That does not mean every Sandbox configuration maps directly to a manually managed Hyper-V VM.
WSL 2 Linux development within the Windows workflow. Uses a subset of Hyper-V architecture. Its networking behaves in some ways like a VM, including having an IP address different from the Windows host.

Microsoft explains Windows Sandbox configuration and the WSL FAQ. Those descriptions do not establish a controlled performance comparison between the options, or that WSL 2 users must manually enable the full Hyper-V role.

Does Hyper-V slow down your PC?

The cited Microsoft documentation does not quantify a universal performance impact. A VM uses host resources while it runs, so the effect depends on the workload, VM allocation, and the capacity left for Windows and other applications. The documentation does not support a blanket claim that enabling Hyper-V will—or will not—slow every PC. If you are not using VMs, you can leave the optional feature off.
