For a large batch of small files, try Windows’ built-in Robocopy with its /MT option. It can copy files concurrently, which may reduce the repeated overhead of creating and transferring each file. Add /LOG to write status to a log rather than the console. The result depends on your files, storage, and connection; Microsoft warns that too many threads can hurt performance, so start with the default and compare on your actual copy job.
Why thousands of small files can copy slowly
A transfer of hundreds, thousands, or even millions of files under 1 MB can take longer than the total data size suggests. Each file requires repeated filesystem work to create and write it; on SMB network copies, protocol overhead adds to that work. Antivirus actions may also recur for each file. As a result, a fast network link does not guarantee that the copy will use its full bandwidth.
File Explorer is convenient for basic copying, but Microsoft says it lacks some performance optimizations available in Robocopy for particular tasks. Robocopy’s multithreaded option can overlap work across files. That can make it faster for a suitable workload, but there is no universal speedup or guarantee that it will beat Explorer for every local or network copy.

robocopy "C:Source" "D:Destination" /E /COPY:DAT /MT:8 /LOG:"C:Logscopy.log"
/Eincludes subdirectories, including empty ones./COPY:DATcopies file data, attributes, and timestamps. This is Robocopy’s documented default copy set./MT:8runs multiple file copies concurrently. Eight is the default thread count./LOGwrites status output to the named log file, reducing console output. Review the log when the job finishes for skipped files or errors.
This command copies the source tree; it does not mirror or purge the destination. Do not add /MIR unless you intend to mirror directory trees: it can delete destination files and directories that are absent from the source.
Choose a thread count by comparing real copy jobs
Microsoft documents /MT values from 1 to 128, with a default of 8. More threads are not automatically better: excess concurrency can reduce performance, and the best setting depends on the workload and devices involved.

- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
- Use the default
/MTsetting, or specify/MT:8, for an initial run. - Repeat the copy with a modestly different thread count, keeping the file set, source, destination, and network the same.
- Compare elapsed time and check each run’s log for errors or skipped files. Use the count that works best for your setup rather than assuming the highest supported value is fastest.
Microsoft’s Azure Files migration guidance reports 8–20 threads as balanced in its described migration context. That observation is specific to Azure Files and should not be treated as a recommended range or benchmark for local transfers.

/Scopies subdirectories but excludes empty directories; use/Ewhen empty directories should also be copied./Zenables restartable mode, which can resume interrupted file copies. It is not itself a small-file speed optimization./Juses unbuffered I/O. Microsoft recommends it for large files and suggests trying it for files larger than 1 GB in its SMB troubleshooting guidance. It is not the main fix for thousands of tiny files.- More extensive copy flags can include security and ownership information. Use them only when the task requires it.
If Robocopy is still slow, locate the bottleneck
A slow copy can be limited by the source or destination storage, the client, the file server, or the network. On SMB transfers, repeated filesystem and protocol operations, as well as antivirus work on each file, may contribute. Rather than assume the network or a device needs replacing, compare a copy on known healthy storage and try another client. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends testing a copy locally on the file server.

Compare an archive-first transfer
For a very large set of tiny files, creating an archive, copying that single file, and extracting it at the destination is another option to test. Count the time to create and extract the archive as well as the transfer time. The approach depends on compression and decompression speed, so it is not guaranteed to beat a direct copy.
For transfers involving Azure
For transfers to or from Azure, Microsoft recommends AzCopy, which is designed for cloud workloads. Microsoft’s Azure Files guidance also notes that small-file workloads can be limited by namespace enumeration and that increasing thread counts may help small files without producing proportional gains for large files. Those observations apply to the described Azure context, not as a universal local-copy benchmark.
