On a Windows 11 gaming laptop, start with Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Set demanding games to High performance, enable Optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 titles, and then choose a supported refresh rate in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. These settings can improve GPU selection, latency, or motion smoothness, but none guarantees a fixed frame-rate increase: your result depends on the game, display, drivers, and laptop design.

Which Windows graphics settings matter most on a gaming laptop?

Windows exposes three groups of settings that are useful for laptop gaming:

  • Per-game GPU preference: choose whether Windows should favor power saving or high performance when the laptop has integrated and discrete GPUs.
  • Optimizations for windowed games: a Windows 11 feature for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless.
  • Refresh-rate, variable-refresh, and dynamic-refresh controls: settings that trade motion smoothness, compatibility, and battery life.

Apply one change at a time, restart the game when instructed, and compare the same scene or built-in benchmark before and after. Microsoft documents the available choices and feature behavior, not a universal FPS gain for every laptop.

Before changing anything

Confirm the Windows edition and display hardware

The windowed-game optimization controls described here are Windows 11 controls. The refresh-rate page also covers Windows 10, but Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Labels can vary with Windows releases, laptop firmware, graphics drivers, and whether the manufacturer exposes a hardware MUX or graphics-mode switch.

Connect power for a fair test

Laptop power policies can reduce CPU or GPU performance on battery. Test settings while plugged in if your goal is gaming performance, then separately choose a battery-friendly configuration for travel. A Windows graphics preference does not override every manufacturer performance mode or thermal limit.

Choose the GPU for a specific game

A laptop with integrated and discrete graphics can route different workloads to different chips. Microsoft describes integrated GPUs as generally more power-efficient and discrete GPUs as better suited to demanding work such as gaming. Windows’ setting is a preference, not an absolute hardware command: driver behavior, display wiring, and the laptop’s design can still affect which GPU is active.

Set a game to High performance

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Under Custom options for apps, select the game. If it is absent, use the available app-selection control to add it.
  3. Select Options.
  4. Choose High performance, then select Save.
  5. Close and restart the game so the changed preference can take effect.

Windows may show these choices:

Windows choice What it favors When to try it
Let Windows decide (Power saving) Automatic selection, with power saving as the displayed default description Games that already choose the expected GPU or systems where battery life matters more
Power saving The more efficient graphics path, usually the integrated GPU Light games, low-demand titles, or battery-powered play
High performance The higher-performance graphics path, usually the discrete GPU Demanding 3D games when you want Windows to prefer the discrete GPU

The exact chip used and any FPS change are hardware- and game-dependent. If High performance does not change behavior, check the laptop maker’s graphics-mode utility, driver installation, external-monitor connection, and in-game GPU information. Do not assume that selecting the preference alone proves a discrete GPU is rendering every frame.

Use per-game settings instead of a global guess

A global choice can waste battery whenever you perform ordinary tasks. Per-game rules let a browser, video call, or office application remain on the efficient GPU while only a demanding title receives the High performance preference. Set rules for the games that need them and leave uncomplicated titles on Let Windows decide unless testing shows a problem.

Enable Optimizations for windowed games

Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games targets compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. Microsoft says it moves compatible games from the legacy blit presentation model to the newer flip model. That change can reduce frame latency and make features such as Auto HDR and VRR available on supported displays.

Turn the optimization on

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Under Default settings, turn on Optimizations for windowed games.
  3. Restart each affected game.

The scope matters. A DirectX 12 title, an incompatible game, or a game running in exclusive full-screen mode may not receive this particular path. The setting is also not a promise of a measured performance increase; test your own title.

Understand Auto HDR and per-game overrides

Microsoft states that Auto HDR turns the windowed-game optimization on automatically. If you want to disable the optimization while Auto HDR is active, turn off Auto HDR first. Windows also provides per-game controls to disable the optimization or opt out of Auto HDR. Use those controls when a specific title shows visual artifacts, an unexpected latency change, or a compatibility problem while other games work normally.

Set the laptop display refresh rate

Refresh rate is the number of times per second the display refreshes. A higher supported rate can make camera movement and animation look smoother; a lower rate can reduce display power use and extend battery life. It does not create additional rendered frames by itself. The game and GPU still need to produce frames fast enough to benefit.

Choose a supported rate

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. If more than one display is listed, select the panel you will use for gaming.
  3. Open the menu beside Choose a refresh rate.
  4. Select a rate supported by the display and your preferred resolution.

Available values depend on the panel and current resolution. Microsoft notes that an asterisk can identify a rate that does not support the current resolution; choosing that value changes the resolution to achieve the selected rate. If the resulting image is not the resolution you want, choose another combination rather than accepting the asterisked mode blindly.

Balance smoothness against battery life

Use the panel’s highest supported rate when the laptop is plugged in and the game can sustain an appropriate frame rate. For unplugged play, a lower rate may reduce display power use. This is a usage choice, not a universal “best” number. A 120 Hz panel running at 60 Hz can save power, while a high-refresh panel is valuable when smooth motion is a priority.

VRR and Dynamic Refresh Rate: when to enable them

Check VRR support first

In Advanced display, Windows reports whether the selected display supports variable refresh rate. VRR is hardware-dependent; a toggle may be absent on a panel that cannot provide it. If VRR is available, the game, driver, and display mode must still cooperate for the feature to operate as expected.

Understand Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR)

Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate adjusts refresh rate according to activity. Microsoft specifies two requirements: the display must support VRR, and its refresh rate must be at least 120 Hz. DRR is therefore not a universal laptop setting.

Microsoft says DRR should not affect games designed for VRR, but it may limit the maximum refresh rate of other games. If a game appears capped at a lower refresh rate after you enable DRR, disable DRR and retest. Keep DRR enabled only when its automatic power-saving behavior does not interfere with the titles you play.

Do not confuse refresh rate with FPS

Refresh rate describes what the screen can display; FPS describes how quickly the game produces frames. A 144 Hz panel can show up to 144 refreshes per second, but a game rendering at 70 FPS cannot supply 144 unique frames. Conversely, a high FPS number is not useful if the panel or active mode is limited to a lower refresh rate.

A practical order for changing settings

  1. Record a baseline: note the current refresh rate, display mode, and an in-game FPS or frame-time reading in a repeatable scene.
  2. Set the per-game GPU preference: choose High performance for a demanding title, save, and restart the game.
  3. Test windowed play: if you use windowed or borderless mode and the game is a compatible DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 title, enable Optimizations for windowed games and restart.
  4. Select the refresh rate: choose a supported rate in Advanced display, checking that the desired resolution remains active.
  5. Evaluate VRR or DRR: enable only when the display reports support; if DRR lowers a game’s apparent cap, turn DRR off.
  6. Keep or revert based on evidence: compare the same game and scene after each change. Retain settings that improve smoothness, latency, or battery behavior without introducing a compatibility problem.

Common problems and fixes

The game still uses the integrated GPU

  • Confirm that the game’s executable, not only its launcher, is listed under Custom options for apps.
  • Reopen the game after selecting High performance.
  • Check whether the laptop’s manufacturer utility has an Eco, hybrid, or integrated-only graphics mode.
  • Verify that graphics drivers are installed correctly and that an external display is not changing the routing behavior.

Windows’ preference does not guarantee a particular chip on every laptop, so verify with the game’s graphics information or a trusted system monitor rather than relying on the menu selection alone.

Windowed optimization causes a problem

Use the per-game Graphics option to disable the optimization for that title. If Auto HDR is enabled, turn Auto HDR off before attempting to disable the optimization globally. Test borderless and exclusive full-screen modes separately because the feature’s documented scope is windowed and borderless play for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games.

The selected refresh rate changes resolution

Return to Advanced display and choose a rate without the asterisk, or select a mode that explicitly supports your desired resolution. The asterisk indicates that Windows cannot maintain the current resolution at that rate.

DRR appears to cap a game

Disable Dynamic Refresh Rate and run the same test again. Microsoft identifies this as the mitigation when a game appears to run at a lower refresh rate after DRR is enabled.

There is no FPS improvement

That result is normal. The official guidance does not promise a fixed gain. GPU preference can correct an inefficient routing decision, while windowed optimization can reduce presentation latency; neither can overcome a CPU limit, thermal throttling, an in-game frame cap, or a GPU that is already fully loaded. Keep the setting only if your own measurements or visible smoothness show a benefit.

Settings that are not universal fixes

  • High performance is not a guaranteed discrete-GPU lock: laptop wiring and driver policy can still determine the final path.
  • Windowed optimization is not for every API or display mode: its documented target is compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless modes.
  • VRR and DRR require hardware support: missing controls usually indicate that the panel, refresh rate, or driver does not meet the requirement.
  • A higher refresh rate is not always better for battery life: lowering it can reduce display power use when you are away from an outlet.

Recommended default profile

For a plugged-in Windows 11 gaming session, use High performance for demanding games, enable Optimizations for windowed games if you play compatible DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 titles in windowed or borderless mode, and select the highest refresh rate that preserves your preferred resolution. Enable VRR or DRR only when Advanced display reports support and testing shows no cap or compatibility issue. For battery play, consider the Power saving GPU preference and a lower refresh rate, accepting that these choices prioritize endurance over maximum smoothness.
