“Getting things ready” is update-related Windows messaging, but the words do not identify one specific task or show whether a computer is stuck. Microsoft documents the phrase as revised wording for “Getting Windows ready” in its Windows IoT Enterprise update guidance. That makes the screen easier to understand—and also sets a limit on what we can infer from it.
What does “Getting things ready” mean?
Microsoft lists “Getting things ready” as replacement wording for the earlier update message “Getting Windows ready.” The phrase belongs to an update-related preparation experience. It is a status message, not a detailed report of the individual operations underway.
Microsoft’s Manage Update Experience guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 IoT Enterprise. It documents the message strings and update-screen behavior for those editions; it does not provide a complete account of every task performed during setup on consumer Windows PCs.
Why did the wording change?
Microsoft says that, starting with Windows fall 2021 releases, it rewrote update-message strings to remove references such as “Windows,” “computer,” and “PC,” keeping the experience focused on the fixed-purpose device. The wording change explains why the newer phrase can sound less specific: it describes the experience without naming the device or operating system.

What can the screen tell you about update activity?
In the documented IoT Enterprise scenario, the Windows Update service can run in the background while its user-interface experience is hidden. The guidance therefore distinguishes the update activity from the screen that presents or conceals it. The message alone does not reveal the exact sequence of work, confirm that a particular update is being installed, or describe every process on a general-purpose PC.

No conclusion about a freeze follows from the wording alone. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not give a universal duration or a threshold for deciding that this screen is stuck. Without additional symptoms or device-specific information, the message itself is not enough to diagnose a problem or to say how long the screen should remain visible.
