For a two-monitor Windows 11 home office, choose Extend, arrange the numbered displays to match your desk, and then configure each screen separately. Keep each monitor’s Recommended scale and resolution as your starting point; change refresh rate, brightness, Night light, orientation, HDR, and docking behavior only when your hardware or work habits call for it.
The settings that matter most
A dual-monitor setup works well when Windows understands which screen is on which side, each display is running a suitable pixel mode, and the output mode matches your purpose. Use this order so later adjustments do not hide a layout or connection problem.

The instructions below target Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so treat any Windows 10 menu reference as a legacy compatibility note rather than a current-support recommendation.
Connect both displays and choose the desktop mode
Check the physical connection first
Connect both monitors through the computer’s ports, dock, or adapter, then turn them on and select the correct input on each monitor. Microsoft recommends checking the existing cables or dock and installing available Windows updates before changing display options. A loose cable, an inactive dock output, or a monitor on the wrong input can look like a Windows configuration error.

Select Extend
- Press Windows+P.
- Select Extend.
Extend gives you a separate workspace on each screen, so a browser, document, chat window, or reference material can remain visible without covering the other display. Choose Duplicate only when both screens must show the same image, such as a presentation viewed by people in the same room. PC screen only disables the external output, while Second screen only uses only the external display.
Detect a screen that is missing
Open Settings > System > Display. Expand Multiple displays, then select Detect. If Windows still finds only one display, recheck the cable, dock power, monitor input, and adapter connection before changing resolution or refresh settings.
Match Windows’ display diagram to your desk
Identify each monitor
- Go to Settings > System > Display.
- Select Identify. Windows shows a number on each physical screen.
- Use the numbers to determine which tile represents the left and right monitor (or an upper and lower screen).
Drag, apply, and test
In the display diagram, drag each numbered tile until it mirrors the monitors’ actual positions. Microsoft Support states: “In Display settings, select and drag the display to where you want.” Select Apply, then move the pointer across the join. If the pointer enters the other monitor too high or too low, return to the diagram and adjust the tile’s vertical alignment. The tiles do not need to be perfectly flush if the physical screens are offset; they need to reproduce the edge where you expect the pointer to cross.
This arrangement is independent of which monitor is numbered 1 or 2. The number identifies a display; the tile position determines its place in the virtual desktop.

Set scale, resolution, and orientation for each screen
Select the display before changing it
Windows applies scale and resolution to the display currently selected in the diagram. Click one monitor tile, make its changes, then select the other tile and review it separately. Two monitors with different sizes or pixel densities often need different scale values to make text appear similarly sized.
Start with Recommended values
- With a display selected, open Settings > System > Display.
- Under Scale and layout, open Scale and start with the option labeled Recommended.
- Open Display resolution and start with its Recommended option.
- Repeat the check for the second display.
Scale and resolution are separate controls. Scale changes the apparent size of Windows elements; resolution changes the pixel mode sent to the monitor. If resolution is set below the panel’s native mode, text can look less sharp and the picture may appear small, centered with borders, or stretched. If an application looks unusually large or small, verify scale on the display where that application is open before changing resolution.
Use orientation only when the physical monitor calls for it
For a monitor rotated vertically, select it in the display diagram and use Display orientation to choose the orientation that matches the hardware, then apply the change. Leave ordinary landscape monitors in landscape; changing orientation on one screen does not correct a misplaced display tile.
Choose a refresh rate that the hardware can sustain
Open Advanced display
- Go to Settings > System > Display.
- Select the monitor you want to configure.
- Open Advanced display.
- Choose a refresh rate that the selected display and your connection support.
Refresh rate is most noticeable when scrolling, dragging windows, or watching motion. A higher number is not automatically better for an office monitor if it forces an unsuitable resolution or is unavailable through the dock or adapter. The choices shown by Windows depend on the display and graphics hardware.

Understand the asterisk warning
Windows marks some rates with an asterisk when they do not support the current resolution. Selecting one of those rates also changes the resolution. If the resulting image is not acceptable, return to Advanced display and select a supported combination without the asterisk, or restore the Recommended resolution first.
Dynamic Refresh Rate is conditional
Windows 11 may offer Dynamic Refresh Rate on hardware that supports it. Availability depends on the computer and display; it is not available in Windows 10. Do not treat its absence as a fault on a desktop configuration that does not support the feature.
Adjust brightness, color, and Night light per display
Know where brightness is controlled
On a laptop panel, Windows may provide a brightness control in Display settings or Quick Settings. On a desktop PC with external monitors, a Windows brightness slider may be absent. In that case, use each monitor’s physical buttons, joystick, or on-screen menu. Set the two screens close enough in brightness that moving a window between them does not cause a distracting jump.

- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select Night light.
- Turn it on immediately or schedule it for Sunset to sunrise or for specific hours.
Night light changes the color temperature to reduce blue-toned light at the scheduled time. Because it changes the image, leave it off when accurate color is important and enable it when evening comfort is the priority.

Use HDR only on a compatible display
Turn HDR on for the intended monitor
- Select the compatible display in Settings > System > Display.
- Open HDR (the section appears only when Windows detects HDR capability).
- Enable HDR and review the resulting picture with the content you actually use.
HDR is optional for a home-office setup. Office applications and ordinary SDR content can look different when HDR is enabled, and HDR and SDR material may not have the same apparent brightness.
Balance SDR content when necessary
Windows provides a per-display control for the SDR/HDR balance. Adjust it while viewing the applications you use most, rather than applying a value based on the other monitor. If one screen is HDR-capable and the other is not, configure HDR only on the capable screen; the displays do not need identical settings.
Important laptop limitation
Microsoft says HDR on an external HDR monitor connected to a laptop requires Extend, not Duplicate. If HDR options are unavailable or the external image is not behaving as expected, switch the projection mode with Windows+P and choose Extend before troubleshooting further.
Choose window behavior when docking and undocking
A laptop that moves between a desk dock and mobile use can preserve or rearrange windows depending on two options. Open Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays and review:

- Remember window locations based on monitor connection lets Windows place windows where they were last used when the monitor arrangement returns.
- Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected hides windows that were on a display that is no longer available.
These are preference settings, not performance fixes. Enable the first when you want a repeatable desk layout; enable the second if disconnected windows otherwise remain difficult to reach on the laptop screen.
A practical setup sequence for a home office
- Connect both displays, power them on, select their correct inputs, and check for Windows updates.
- Press Windows+P and choose Extend.
- Use Settings > System > Display > Identify to match numbers to physical screens.
- Drag the numbered tiles into the desk’s left-right, upper-lower, or portrait arrangement, select Apply, and test pointer movement.
- Select each monitor in turn and use its Recommended scale and resolution.
- Open Advanced display only if scrolling or motion requires a refresh-rate change; keep the resolution-and-rate combination supported by the hardware.
- Match brightness with the monitors’ own controls when Windows does not expose a slider, then schedule Night light if desired.
- Enable HDR only on a compatible display and adjust SDR/HDR balance if ordinary desktop content looks too bright or too dim.
- If the computer is a docking laptop, set the window-location and disconnect-minimization preferences under Multiple displays.
Troubleshoot the common failures
The second monitor is not listed
- Open Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Detect.
- Check the cable at both ends, the dock’s power, the adapter, and the monitor’s selected input.
- Install pending Windows updates, then reconnect the display.
The pointer crosses at the wrong height
Return to the Display diagram, drag the numbered tiles so their edges meet where the physical monitors meet, select Apply, and test again. This is an arrangement issue, not a resolution issue.
Text is blurry or the image has borders
Select the affected monitor and restore its Recommended resolution. A resolution below the panel’s native mode can reduce sharpness or produce a small, centered, bordered, or stretched image. Check scale separately if only interface sizing is wrong.

In Advanced display, avoid rates marked with an asterisk if you need to keep the current resolution. Select a rate supported at that resolution, or restore the Recommended resolution and choose again.
Brightness controls are missing
External desktop monitors may not expose brightness to Windows. Use the controls built into each monitor instead. This behavior does not mean the display is defective.
HDR looks inconsistent
Verify that HDR is enabled on the intended display, use Extend on a laptop rather than Duplicate, and adjust the per-display SDR/HDR balance. Different capabilities between two monitors can produce different results by design.
