Windows Developer Configurations automates a repeatable developer setup; Microsoft’s documentation does not say it repairs a general Windows defect or admit to breaking one. Choose a full workstation, a Windows-and-WSL shell, or a single language workload based on what you need to install—not on an assumption that the tool is a Windows repair utility.
What Windows Developer Configurations does
Microsoft describes Windows Developer Configurations as an open-source collection of declarative configuration files. Each configuration specifies packages, Windows settings, and post-install steps for a particular development scenario. The project is intended to take a fresh Windows machine to a ready-to-code state, and its configurations are designed to be rerun. See Microsoft’s overview of Windows Developer Configurations.
It is not a single app or a general-purpose Windows repair tool. The repository documents three broad setup paths: a complete workstation, a Windows-plus-WSL shell environment, and individual language or framework workloads. Package contents and commands can change, so consult the current project README for the latest details.

| Path | Best fit | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Complete workstation | A fresh Windows 11 machine that needs a broad development baseline | Development tools, selected Windows settings, and WSL with Ubuntu. The repository describes standard and full experiences. |
| WSL Comfort | You already want to work across Windows and Linux and mainly need a tailored shell | Shell and terminal customization, with options for shells, prompt styling, command-line tools, and clipboard helpers. |
| Individual workload | You need one development stack without configuring the entire workstation | Focused setups for workloads such as Python, TypeScript, .NET, Go, Java, Rust, PHP, SQL, PowerShell, WinForms, WinUI 3, and WinAppCLI. |
Standard or full workstation?
The repository’s documented standard experience includes tools such as Windows Terminal, PowerShell 7, Git, GitHub CLI, Visual Studio Code, the .NET SDK, Python with uv, Node.js, Windows Coreutils, Windows App CLI, Oh My Posh, and PowerToys. Its full experience adds settings, including Developer Mode and other system options. Choose full only if those additional settings suit your needs; a broader configuration is not automatically better for every developer.

For alternatives and language-specific setup guidance beyond this project, Microsoft also maintains a Windows developer tools and environment directory, which points to tools such as WinGet, WSL, Windows Terminal, and PowerToys.
What to check before setup
- Plan for a possible restart. The workstation flow may need to restart Windows to finish configuring WSL.
- Check virtualization availability. WSL setup can fail if virtualization is unavailable. On a physical PC, virtualization may need to be enabled in firmware; in a virtual machine, nested virtualization may need to be exposed.
- Consider device management. Organization policy can restrict settings or developer capabilities, so a work-managed device may not allow every option.
Use the repository’s troubleshooting guidance for current setup steps and known issues. The project may change its commands and package versions over time.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
WinGet configuration reports an internal error
The project README documents an internal WinGet configuration error associated with a missing Visual C++ Redistributable. Check the README’s current troubleshooting instructions for the applicable remedy rather than relying on a command copied from an older guide.
An installed command is not recognized
If a tool appears to have installed but its command is unavailable, the README advises opening a new terminal or using the relevant workload shim. A new terminal session can pick up updated PATH information; check the project’s instructions for the specific workload if that does not resolve the issue.

WSL setup cannot access virtualization
Determine whether Windows is running on physical hardware or inside a virtual machine. The corresponding fix differs: firmware virtualization settings matter on physical hardware, while nested virtualization must be available to a guest VM. Follow the README’s current WSL troubleshooting steps for your configuration.

Not for ordinary daily use, and not simply because you are a developer. Microsoft says Developer Mode enables development-related capabilities, including debugging and additional app deployment options. It requires administrator access and may be disabled on organization-managed devices. Enable it only when a tool or workflow you use requires those capabilities. See Microsoft’s Developer Mode guidance.

Does this prove Microsoft admitted it broke Windows?
No. The cited Microsoft documentation presents Windows Developer Configurations as a repeatable environment setup project and describes troubleshooting for particular setup problems. It does not establish an admission that Microsoft broke Windows or identify a general Windows defect that this project fixes. To substantiate a claim about a specific broken feature, you would need evidence about that feature itself; these configuration documents do not provide it.
