A minimal Windows desktop keeps only the shortcuts you use often, while putting everything else somewhere easy to reach. You can hide icons without deleting files, pin regular apps to Start or the taskbar, and use Focus or virtual desktops when you need fewer distractions. These changes are reversible and use Windows’ built-in settings.
Choose where your shortcuts should live
There is no single right number of desktop icons. Keep a few visible if they make everyday tasks faster; move or remove shortcuts you rarely use. Removing a shortcut is different from deleting the file it points to, so check what you are selecting before deleting anything.
Compare the main options by how they balance visibility and access:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Location | Visibility | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop | Always on the surface | You want direct access to a small number of files or shortcuts | Many icons can make the desktop feel busy |
| Taskbar | Visible while you work | You open the same apps frequently and want one-click access | Space is limited, so prioritize a few apps |
| Start menu | Appears when opened | You want to group app and folder shortcuts without keeping them on the desktop | Requires opening Start to reach a pin |
| Windows Search | Appears when invoked | You prefer finding apps, settings, and files by name | You need to know what you are looking for |
These are navigation choices, not measured speed or productivity outcomes. For details on desktop icons, taskbar pins, and Start folders, see Microsoft’s guides to desktop icons, the taskbar, and the Start menu.

How do I hide desktop icons in Windows?
In Windows 11, right-click an empty area of the desktop, select View, then select Show desktop icons to turn the display off. Repeat the same steps to show them again. This hides the icons from view; it does not delete the files or shortcuts.
Keep or resize built-in desktop icons
To choose which common Windows icons appear, open Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings, then select the icons you want. To adjust their size, right-click the desktop and choose View and an icon size. The exact available labels can vary by Windows version or build. Microsoft’s desktop icon instructions cover these options.

How do I clean up my Windows taskbar?
Keep taskbar pins for the apps you open most, and unpin anything you no longer use there. In Windows 11, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar to review optional taskbar items and the system-tray overflow area. Turn off or remove only items you do not need; retain status indicators and controls that matter to you. Some taskbar components are essential and cannot be removed.
Taskbar settings and available controls differ between Windows 11 builds and Windows 10. Use Microsoft’s taskbar guide for the applicable version rather than assuming the same toggle exists everywhere.

How can I keep shortcuts without cluttering the desktop?
Pin frequent apps to Start or the taskbar
Pin the apps you use repeatedly to Start or the taskbar, then unpin ones that have stopped earning their place. Start can group related pins into folders, which is useful for keeping shortcuts organized without leaving them scattered across the desktop. Windows Search is another built-in way to find apps, settings, and files without keeping a shortcut visible.
Move less-used items into folders
For files and shortcuts you want to keep but seldom open, create a small number of clearly named folders and move the items there. Avoid deleting an item just to make the desktop look cleaner unless you have confirmed you no longer need the underlying file. Microsoft describes pinning and grouping options in its Start menu guide.

Choose a quieter background
Windows lets you use a solid color or an image as the desktop background. Choose one that feels visually calm to you; simplicity is an aesthetic preference, not evidence that a particular wallpaper or color improves productivity. Use Settings > Personalization > Background to change it. Microsoft’s background instructions cover the available choices.
Use Focus when you want fewer interruptions
When you want a quieter work period, open Settings > System > Focus in Windows 11 to start a Focus session and configure its options. These can include hiding taskbar badges and flashing and enabling Do Not Disturb. A Focus session turns on Do Not Disturb automatically. If Do Not Disturb was already on before the session, it remains on after the session ends. Check the settings after a session if you want to change notification behavior. See Microsoft’s Focus guide for details.

Organize open windows separately from desktop icons
Desktop cleanup affects shortcuts; it does not arrange the windows you have open. If you switch among different kinds of work, Windows’ built-in window tools can help separate or arrange those active tasks:
- Virtual desktops: Use Task View to create separate desktop spaces for different contexts, such as personal tasks and work projects.
- Snap layouts: Arrange open windows into screen layouts when you need to view several at once.
These tools are optional. They are most useful when you are juggling distinct tasks or window groups, not as a required part of a minimal desktop. Microsoft describes these focus and window-management options in its guide to making it easier to focus on tasks.
Windows 10 note
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. Some Microsoft instructions cover both Windows 10 and Windows 11, but their labels and controls can differ, so follow the version-specific steps where provided. The end-of-support notice appears in Microsoft’s Start menu guidance and Focus guidance.
A clean desktop does not diagnose a slow PC
Removing visible icons may make the screen feel less cluttered, but it does not establish that the computer has become faster. If Windows is running slowly, troubleshoot performance separately. Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and aging hardware among possible causes in its PC performance guidance.
