If restarting your router did not restore internet access, first check what Windows sees, then run targeted tests. For a persistent Wi-Fi problem, Microsoft Support’s manual reset sequence is netsh winsock reset, netsh int ip reset, ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew, and ipconfig /flushdns, in that order, from an administrator Command Prompt. Test the connection after the sequence. These commands address Windows networking components; they cannot fix every router, Wi-Fi, ISP, website, or policy problem.
Inspect your Windows network configuration first
Open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig /all
Find the adapter you are actually using—such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet—and note its IPv4 or IPv6 address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS servers. These entries should make sense for the network you joined. Microsoft’s DNS-client troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the IP address, gateway, DNS server addresses, and connection-specific DNS suffix; that guidance is scoped to Windows Server, so treat it as technical diagnostic advice rather than a consumer-specific checklist.
If you do not know what values your network should use, do not replace them with guesses. On a managed work or school device, ask the administrator before changing network settings.

| Command | What it checks or changes | What the result can tell you |
|---|---|---|
ping <default-gateway-IP> |
Tests whether the PC receives a response from its local gateway. | A response shows that the gateway replied to ICMP; no response alone does not prove the network is disconnected, because a firewall or device may block ping. |
ping <DNS-server-IP> |
Tests whether the configured DNS server responds to ICMP. | No response may indicate filtering rather than a failed DNS service. Microsoft notes that ICMP must be permitted for this test to work. |
nslookup <hostname> |
Requests a DNS lookup for a hostname. | If an IP-level test works but a hostname lookup fails, investigate name resolution rather than assuming the entire network stack needs resetting. |
tracert <hostname-or-IP> |
Shows responding router interfaces along the route, using ICMP and incrementally increasing TTL values. | An asterisk means a hop did not return the expected response; some routers do not send TTL-expired messages. One timed-out hop is not proof that the end-to-end connection is broken. |
pathping <hostname-or-IP> |
Gathers latency and packet-loss information for routers and links along a route. | Use it when you need more route and loss information than a basic trace provides. |
For a DNS comparison, try a hostname that fails and, where appropriate, a known public name. Interpret results in context: ICMP filtering can make ping or route tracing appear to fail even when other traffic works. Microsoft documents tracert and pathping behavior and use.

Run Microsoft’s manual reset sequence for a persistent Wi-Fi problem
Microsoft Support recommends this ordered procedure for Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting. Open Command Prompt as an administrator, then run each command in sequence:
netsh winsock resetnetsh int ip resetipconfig /releaseipconfig /renewipconfig /flushdns
After the commands finish, test the connection. Microsoft’s consumer-facing procedure is documented on its Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting page.

What the reset commands change
netsh winsock resetresets the Winsock catalog to a clean state and removes custom Layered Service Providers. This can address catalog problems, but it may affect software that added a provider.netsh int ip resetresets TCP/IP configuration.ipconfig /releasedrops the current DHCP configuration, andipconfig /renewrequests a DHCP configuration again. Microsoft describesipconfigas most useful on computers set to obtain an IP address automatically. These are not fixes for manually assigned static settings; correct an invalid static IP, gateway, or DNS value in the adapter’s TCP/IP properties instead.ipconfig /flushdnsclears the local DNS resolver cache. It can help when stale or negative cached results are involved, but it will not repair an unreachable router, failed Wi-Fi radio, ISP outage, or every DNS-server problem.
Microsoft’s ipconfig reference describes the command and its switches. The Winsock reset’s scope is covered in Microsoft’s Winsock catalog reset guidance.

Record settings first on managed or specially configured devices
Before resetting a server or a machine with carefully configured interfaces, record its network settings and confirm that you can restore them. Microsoft’s Windows Server TCP/IP guidance gives this example for saving and restoring interface configuration:

netsh -c interface dump > C:netConfig.txt
After a reset and restart, the documented restore example is:
netsh -f C:netConfig.txt
This is advanced Windows Server guidance, not a required step for every home user. Restoration depends on the interface names still matching; if they have changed, the script may need updating. See Microsoft’s TCP/IP reset and backup/restore guidance.

Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
If the commands do not restore access
Check whether the issue is limited to one device or service
- If other devices also cannot get online, investigate the router, connection, or ISP rather than repeatedly resetting Windows.
- If Windows says Wi-Fi is connected but only one app or site fails, check that app or service and any firewall or network policy that could affect it.
- If the failure began after a network-adapter driver update, the driver may be relevant; a stack reset cannot guarantee a driver or hardware fix.
Consider the network adapter driver only after simpler checks
Microsoft Support suggests uninstalling the network adapter driver and restarting if earlier Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps do not work. Obtain or keep a backup driver first, particularly if the PC might be offline afterward. Windows will try to reinstall a driver on restart. Follow Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting instructions, and do not remove a work-managed adapter driver without your administrator’s approval.
