Windows has a built-in clipboard history, but it is off until you enable it. Press Windows+V, select Turn on, then press Windows+V again whenever you want to paste an earlier item instead of only the last thing you copied. Microsoft’s feature works on Windows 10 and Windows 11; it does not extend Windows 10’s security-support period, which ended October 14, 2025.
Turn on Windows clipboard history

Press Windows+V. The first time, Windows displays the clipboard-history prompt.

Select Turn on.

Copy a few items, then press Windows+V where you want to paste. Select an entry in the panel to paste it.

Microsoft’s Using the clipboard guide describes the feature for Windows 10 and Windows 11. If the panel does not show your copied items, check that history is enabled: open Settings > System > Clipboard.

What clipboard history keeps—and what it does not
Microsoft currently documents a maximum of 25 copied entries and a 4 MB limit per item. The supported formats include text, HTML, and bitmap data. These are the limits published on Microsoft’s support page, which does not display a publication year.
Unpinned items are cleared when you restart Windows, and older unpinned entries are removed as the list fills. Pin items you expect to reuse: pinned clips are retained through normal history clearing. You can remove an individual item or clear the history from the clipboard panel or Settings. Microsoft says the Settings clear action removes device and cloud clipboard data except pinned items.

Choose whether clipboard items sync across devices
Clipboard history can sync between devices associated with the same Microsoft or work account. This is optional: copied text can include passwords, personal details, or confidential work information, so consider what you copy before enabling cross-device sync. Microsoft explains connected experiences in its Windows services and connected experiences documentation.

Windows offers automatic syncing of text you copy or manual syncing of individual text entries. If syncing does not work, confirm the setting is enabled on each device, that both use the same Microsoft or work account, and that the selected sync mode matches how you expect to send clips.

When the built-in history is enough
For occasional reuse of recent snippets, addresses, or links, Windows’ own panel is the simplest starting point: it is already part of the operating system and offers history, pinning, item deletion, clearing, and optional sync. Its 25-entry cap and restart behavior are the key constraints. Pin a small set of repeat-use items, and avoid treating the history as a durable archive.
When a separate clipboard tool may help
Consider another utility if you need more than a short recent list, especially deeper organization, filtering, or transformations before pasting. The capabilities below are documented by their respective projects; they are not claims about comparative speed, reliability, or security.

Windows 10 support is a separate issue
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Clipboard history still being documented for Windows 10 does not mean the operating system continues to receive standard security updates. Treat clipboard convenience and operating-system support as separate decisions.
