Windows Clipboard history lets you reopen recently copied content with Windows key + V. On Windows 11, press that shortcut and select Turn on, or enable it under Start > Settings > System > Clipboard. The feature keeps a limited local list, can preserve pinned entries through a restart, and can sync selected text between devices signed in to the same Microsoft or work account.
The important privacy distinction is that cross-device synchronization uses Microsoft’s cloud. Manual sync uploads the text you choose; Microsoft classifies Cloud Clipboard as a connected experience. The documentation does not specify clipboard-specific encryption or retention periods, so do not sync passwords, authentication codes, or other text you would not want processed through that service.
What Clipboard history does
Normal copying places one item on the Windows clipboard. Clipboard history adds a flyout containing multiple recent items, so you can choose an earlier copy instead of copying it again. Press Windows key + V in any app to open the flyout. Select an entry to paste it into the active application.
History is separate from the current clipboard item. You can continue using ordinary Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V; history simply gives you more than the latest item to choose from. Pinning an entry marks it for preservation under the conditions described below.

How to turn on Clipboard history in Windows 11
- Press Windows key + V.
- When the history panel says the feature is not enabled, select Turn on.
- Copy some text, an image, or other supported content, then press Windows key + V again to verify that it appears.
You can also enable it through Settings:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System, then Clipboard.
- Turn on Clipboard history.
Microsoft’s “Using the clipboard” guidance covers Windows 10 as well. The labels can vary slightly by release, but the Win+V shortcut and the Clipboard section in System settings are the key locations.
Clipboard history limits and supported content
Clipboard history is designed as a short working list, not a permanent archive. Microsoft specifies these product limits:

These are Windows feature specifications, not performance measurements. A pinned item still has to fit the per-item limit and use a supported format.

The list made room for newer copies
Once the history list is full, Windows evicts older unpinned entries. Pin important snippets from their item menu before continuing to copy. Pinning is useful for recurring text such as a project identifier, but it should not be treated as a secure vault.

The computer restarted
A restart clears ordinary history. Pinned entries are the exception, so pin content that must survive a reboot.
The item was too large or unsupported
Content above the documented per-item size, or content outside the listed text, HTML, and bitmap formats, may never enter history. If a particular copy operation consistently fails, test a short plain-text selection to distinguish a format or size issue from a settings problem.
Someone cleared the history
Deleting an entry, choosing Clear all in the Win+V panel, or using the Settings clear command removes content according to the scope of that command. Details are in the clearing section below.

Cross-device history requires the same Microsoft account or work account on each participating Windows device. Configure the feature separately on every device you want to use.

- Open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard.
- Turn on Clipboard history across your devices (the wording may be shortened to a sync switch in some builds).
- Sign in with the same Microsoft or work account on the other Windows devices.
- Choose whether text should sync automatically or only when you select it manually.
Sync is a text feature. The setting does not mean every clipboard format is guaranteed to move between devices; Microsoft’s documented sync instructions specifically describe text.
Automatic text sync
Automatic mode sends copied text according to the sync setting, without requiring you to mark each item. It is convenient when you routinely move short, non-sensitive snippets between your own PCs.
Manual text sync
Manual mode gives you an item-by-item decision. Copy the text, press Windows key + V, and select the sync control on that item. Microsoft states that the selected text is then uploaded to the cloud and synced to the other signed-in devices.
Sync turned off
With cross-device sync disabled, local Clipboard history can still be enabled and managed on each PC. Nothing in the local-history setting requires you to use cloud synchronization.

What Clipboard sync means for privacy
Microsoft identifies Cloud Clipboard as a connected experience. Microsoft’s general Windows guidance explains that data is sent to and processed by Microsoft when a connected experience is used. For manual sync, the specific action is clear: the text you select is uploaded to the cloud so it can reach your other devices.
The reviewed Microsoft documentation does not state a Clipboard-specific encryption design, service-side retention period, or every condition under which synchronized content remains available. Do not infer those details from the presence of a lock icon, account sign-in, or the fact that the transfer is between your own PCs.

Treat Clipboard sync as unsuitable for secrets such as passwords, recovery codes, private keys, health information, or confidential customer data. If you accidentally synchronize sensitive text, clear it from the participating devices and from Clipboard settings, then follow the relevant service’s procedure for changing or revoking the exposed secret.

How to delete one item or clear all history
Delete one entry from the Win+V panel
- Press Windows key + V.
- Open the menu for the item you want to remove.
- Select Delete.
This is the most targeted option when the rest of the history is still useful.

Clear local history from the flyout
- Press Windows key + V.
- Select Clear all.
Use this when you want to remove the current local list in one action. Pinned items are treated differently from ordinary entries.
Clear Clipboard data in Settings
- Open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard.
- Under Clear clipboard data, select Clear.
Microsoft says this Settings action clears Clipboard data on the device and in the cloud, except for pinned items. If an item must disappear everywhere, unpin it first and then use the Settings clear command.
Troubleshooting common Clipboard history problems
“I can’t see my clipboard history”
- Press Windows key + V and select Turn on if prompted.
- Otherwise check Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and enable Clipboard history.
- Copy a small plain-text sample and open the panel again.
“My clipboard isn’t syncing to my devices”
- Verify that cross-device Clipboard history is enabled on each device.
- Confirm that every device uses the same Microsoft or work account.
- Check whether the account is configured for automatic sync or whether the item must be selected manually.
- For Windows 10 devices, Microsoft’s instructions additionally require the latest Windows 10 update. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so unsupported systems no longer receive free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.
“I can’t copy items to my clipboard history”
- Check the item’s size against the documented 4 MB per-item limit.
- Try text, HTML, or a bitmap to rule out an unsupported format.
- If small supported content also fails, return to the Clipboard history switch in Settings and verify that it remains enabled.
“My clipboard items are disappearing”
- Check whether the entry was unpinned and displaced by newer copies.
- Check whether the PC restarted since the copy was made.
- Check whether another user or cleanup action cleared the history.
Windows 10 status and current advice
Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The Clipboard article still documents the feature for Windows 10, but support lifecycle matters when deciding whether to keep using that operating system. For a supported, security-maintained setup, plan a move to a supported Windows release rather than relying on an unsupported Windows 10 installation for sensitive work.
Managed computers and the AllowClipboardHistory policy
On organization-managed PCs, an administrator can control Clipboard history with Microsoft’s AllowClipboardHistory policy. If policy disables the feature, the user-facing switch may be unavailable or ineffective. Microsoft documents this setting in the Experience Policy CSP. The policy is an administrator control that prevents Clipboard history from being stored in memory; it is not a consumer-facing privacy toggle for selectively blocking cloud sync while retaining local history.
If you manage the device, review the policy assignment through your organization’s management system. If you do not manage it, contact the administrator instead of repeatedly changing the local Settings switch.

- Enable local history only on devices where the feature is useful.
- Pin recurring, non-sensitive snippets that must survive a restart, and remember that pinned content remains when ordinary history is cleared.

- If you need cross-device access, prefer manual sync for snippets that require an explicit decision.
