If Check for updates is greyed out in Windows, check first whether updates are paused or the PC is managed by work or school. Microsoft documents both as reasons update controls may be unavailable, but neither explains every case. On a personal, unmanaged PC, restart and use Windows’ built-in troubleshooter; on a managed device, ask your administrator to review the update policy.
First check whether Windows is managed
Open Settings > Windows Update and look for a notice such as “Some of these settings are managed by your organization.” Microsoft documents policies that can restrict access to Windows Update, including the SetDisableUXWUAccess policy and settings managed through mobile device management or Windows Server Update Services. Update deferrals and a target feature release can also affect what updates are offered. Microsoft’s Windows Update settings policy documentation explains these controls.
- Work or school PC: Contact your organization’s IT administrator. The setting may be intentionally controlled, and changing policy yourself could conflict with your organization’s configuration. Microsoft notes that the Windows Update repair option “might be unavailable” on a work- or school-managed PC. See Microsoft’s guidance on reinstalling the current Windows version.
- Personal PC with a management notice: If it was previously connected to work or school, check with the administrator or support contact responsible for that setup before attempting to remove management. The notice alone does not identify which policy is active.
Do not use registry edits or remove management settings as a universal fix: the correct policy and device configuration are not established by a greyed-out button alone.
Check whether updates are paused
In Settings > Windows Update, look for an indication that updates are paused and whether Windows shows a resume date. If updates are paused, use the available resume control when you want Windows to check again. Microsoft says updates can be paused for up to 35 days; when the pause expires, Windows checks for, downloads, and installs available updates. See Microsoft’s instructions for pausing and resuming updates.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter on a personal PC
If the PC is not managed and updates are not paused, try the built-in troubleshooter. Microsoft recommends starting with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app on Windows 11. The Settings route is also documented:
- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then select Run beside Windows Update. You can also start with the automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot, then select the Windows Update troubleshooter if it is available.
- Follow the troubleshooter’s prompts and restart the PC after it finishes.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and check whether the button is available.
Microsoft’s current troubleshooting instructions are at Fix Windows Update errors. If the troubleshooter itself is unavailable, Microsoft notes that this can happen on a work- or school-managed PC; contact IT rather than trying to bypass the restriction.

If the button is still greyed out
Record your Windows version and whether the device is managed, then use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance or contact the administrator for a managed PC. A disabled control by itself does not establish hardware failure or indicate that a third-party repair utility is needed. The appropriate next step depends on the device’s configuration and any message shown in Settings.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that after this date it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. If your PC runs Windows 10, distinguish the end of support from a temporary Windows Update problem: troubleshooting a disabled control does not restore the ended support lifecycle.
