If Windows starts only after you unplug an external USB drive, first check whether the PC is trying to boot from that drive instead of its internal Windows installation. Shut down, disconnect the drive, and start the PC; if it boots, put Windows Boot Manager or the internal system drive ahead of USB storage in UEFI/BIOS. This is a low-risk first check, not proof that the external drive is faulty.
Why an external USB drive can stop Windows from starting
The PC’s UEFI/BIOS firmware chooses a boot device before Windows loads. If removable USB storage is ahead of the internal Windows boot entry, the firmware may try the external device first. That is one plausible explanation for this symptom, not a universal diagnosis; the exact cause depends on the PC and its configuration. SanDisk’s guidance identifies USB boot priority as a common cause of boot trouble when a USB drive is connected (SanDisk Support).
The first steps below test that possibility without changing the external drive’s contents. Use the computer manufacturer’s instructions for firmware menus and keys, which differ by model.
1. Disconnect the drive and retry startup
- Shut down the PC completely.
- Unplug the external USB storage device.
- Turn the PC on and see whether Windows loads normally.
If Windows starts, the attached device or the firmware’s handling of it is implicated, but that result alone does not show that the drive has failed. Once Windows is stable, save important files from the external drive before doing further diagnostics.

2. Put the internal Windows entry first in UEFI/BIOS
If the PC boots without the external drive, check boot priority. Open UEFI/BIOS setup using the procedure in the PC maker’s manual, then move the internal Windows Boot Manager or system disk above USB or removable storage. The exact menu name and boot entry vary. Microsoft advises consulting the manufacturer for instructions on boot order, and MSI’s guide illustrates Windows Boot Manager as an internal boot entry (Microsoft: Windows Recovery Environment; MSI: Boot Priority).
Save the change and restart. If the PC still does not boot, restore or verify settings according to the manufacturer’s instructions rather than changing unrelated firmware options at random.

3. Reconnect the drive only after Windows loads
After confirming the PC starts with the external drive disconnected, reconnect it once Windows is fully loaded. Check that you can access its files, then restart to see whether the boot problem returns. If it does, recheck the firmware order and whether the external device is configured as bootable.

Do not format or initialize the drive as a shortcut. Those actions can destroy data, and the available guidance does not establish that either is needed to fix a boot-priority problem.

4. Change firmware settings cautiously
If the internal Windows entry is already first, consult the PC maker’s manual for relevant device-specific boot settings. Avoid disabling “Legacy USB Support” casually: some USB keyboards or mice may rely on it, which can make firmware setup harder to use. Prefer checking boot priority and testing with the drive disconnected before changing broad USB settings (SanDisk Support).
A Secure Boot error after a Secure Boot update is a separate, specialized situation—not a general fix for an external-drive boot-order issue. Microsoft documents a specific recovery procedure for a firmware trust-database failure; use it only if that is the error you are seeing (Microsoft: Secure Boot recovery guidance).

5. Run Startup Repair from Windows Recovery Environment
If disconnecting the drive and correcting boot priority do not restore startup, try Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). It may open automatically after repeated startup failures. If it does not, Windows installation media can boot the PC into recovery: choose Repair my PC, not the installation option, to reach the recovery tools.

One-click scans. No signup required.
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair > Restart.
- If prompted, select the Windows installation and provide the BitLocker recovery key if the device is encrypted.
- Let Startup Repair check for common startup problems, then follow the on-screen result.
Startup Repair can address certain Windows startup faults, including problems involving system files or boot configuration data, but it may not fix a firmware or hardware cause. Microsoft describes it as “a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting” (Microsoft: Startup Repair; Microsoft: Create installation media).

6. Choose a recovery option that matches when the problem began
If startup failed after a Windows update
In WinRE, try Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates if available. Use the option that matches the update and follow the prompts; availability can vary by device and configuration.
If the cause is unclear
System Restore may be available in WinRE and can return system settings to an earlier restore point. Safe Mode is another diagnostic option if you can reach it: if the problem does not recur there, Microsoft notes that default settings, basic drivers, and services may be involved. These options may not appear on every PC (Microsoft: Recovery options in Windows; Microsoft: Start your PC in Safe Mode).
7. Reserve reset or reinstall for last
Resetting Windows or reinstalling it is a more disruptive step than changing boot priority or using Startup Repair. Before proceeding, review the selected recovery option’s effects and back up files wherever possible. Microsoft warns that a clean installation removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. Do not start with a reset or clean install when a simple firmware boot-order issue may be responsible (Microsoft: Recovery options in Windows; Microsoft: Create installation media).
When to use installation media or get help
Installation media is useful when built-in recovery is unavailable or will not open. Microsoft says it can be created on another working PC and used to enter WinRE through Repair my PC; it is not needed for the ordinary boot-order check. If the PC continues to fail after the steps above, consult the manufacturer for model-specific firmware instructions or service.
These recovery options cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, but available tools can vary with the device, configuration, encryption, and Windows version. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; check Microsoft’s current support information and your device maker’s guidance for applicable options (Microsoft: Windows 10 support ends on October 14, 2025).
