A Windows batch file is a text script containing commands for the Windows Command shell. When run by cmd.exe, it executes those commands in sequence, letting you automate routine tasks such as account management or backups. Its customary extension is .bat; batch-program documentation also recognizes .cmd.
What a Windows batch file does
A batch file groups shell commands in a file so Windows can run them in sequence. It is a command script, not a standalone application format. Microsoft describes batch files as a way to automate routine work, including user account management and nightly backups. See Microsoft’s Windows commands overview.
The commands run in the Windows Command shell, with cmd.exe providing the command-interpreter environment. Windows documentation uses .bat as the customary extension and also documents .cmd as a batch-program filename extension.

How batch files handle input and variables
A batch program can receive parameters. Microsoft documents parameter references such as %0 through %9, and %* for the arguments passed to the script. For example, a script can use a parameter to work with a filename supplied when it is launched.

Batch scripts can also refer to environment variables by surrounding a name with percent signs, such as %USERNAME%. When the script runs, cmd substitutes the variable reference with its value. This substitution is not recursive. A child cmd instance inherits its parent’s environment, but changes to local variables in the child do not change the parent’s environment. Microsoft’s cmd documentation explains these behaviors.
One batch program can call another with the call command and continue running afterward; call can also jump to a label in the same batch program. Microsoft’s call reference documents this behavior and the supported parameter forms.

Batch files and PowerShell are different
Windows Command shell and PowerShell are separate command-line shells, not names for the same language or execution environment. A batch file is intended for the Command shell; a PowerShell script uses PowerShell. Microsoft’s Windows commands overview recommends PowerShell instead of Windows Commands or Windows Script Host for the most robust, up-to-date Windows automation.
The cited Microsoft command documentation applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 and to multiple supported Windows Server versions, including Windows Server 2025. For a new or more involved automation task, Microsoft’s stated recommendation is to consider PowerShell; batch files remain a format for commands executed by cmd.exe.
