Windows 365 interview answers are strongest when they connect the service’s design to practical choices about provisioning, identity, networking, security, and support. These 54 questions and answers use current terminology and explain not only what each feature does, but when an administrator would choose it and what to check before changing it.
Windows 365 Cloud PC fundamentals
1. What is Windows 365 Cloud PC, and what is it used for?
Windows 365 is Microsoft’s software-as-a-service Cloud PC offering. It automatically creates a hosted Windows virtual machine for a licensed user, who can connect through the Windows 365 portal, a browser, or a supported client app. Organizations use it to provide a managed Windows desktop without requiring the user’s physical device to host that desktop.
2. How is a Cloud PC different from a physical PC?
A Cloud PC runs in Microsoft’s cloud rather than on the user’s local hardware. The user’s endpoint provides a way to connect, while Windows and the Cloud PC’s compute resources run remotely. That separates the desktop session from a particular endpoint, but access still depends on connectivity, account access, licensing, and the Cloud PC’s state.
3. Who creates and manages a Cloud PC?
An administrator configures the deployment and assigns eligible users; the Windows 365 service creates matching Cloud PCs. As Microsoft puts it in its Windows 365 overview, “Admins don’t manually create Cloud PCs.” Administrators still manage policies, assignments, configuration, and ongoing support through the relevant Microsoft management tools.

4. Which Windows 365 offerings should an administrator know?
Business, Enterprise, and Government generally provide a personal, one-to-one Cloud PC relationship. Windows 365 Flex supports shared access that is not concurrent in the same way as a dedicated personal Cloud PC. The available offering and its requirements depend on the organization’s scenario and eligibility; confirm the current Microsoft requirements for the specific deployment rather than assuming every feature applies to every edition.
5. How does a user connect to a Cloud PC?
A user signs in through the Windows 365 portal, a browser, or a supported client app and opens the assigned Cloud PC. The session is delivered using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). The user’s endpoint is the access device; it does not need to be the computer where the Cloud PC’s Windows environment is hosted.
6. Is Windows 365 the same as virtual desktop infrastructure?
Windows 365 is a managed Cloud PC service, while virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is a broader way of delivering desktops from centralized computing resources. Windows 365 reduces the customer’s responsibility for creating and operating the underlying desktop infrastructure. The amount of control and operational work varies by service and design, so compare specific requirements rather than treating “VDI” as one product.
Provisioning and deployment choices
7. What determines whether a user receives a Cloud PC?
For an Enterprise deployment, the administrator assigns a provisioning policy to Microsoft Entra user groups. The service evaluates group membership and licensing, then provisions Cloud PCs for eligible users. A policy is not a substitute for the required user license: both assignment and eligibility need to be in place.
8. What does a Windows 365 provisioning policy control?
An Enterprise provisioning policy specifies the network, Windows image, optional configuration settings, and the user groups it targets. Those choices determine how matching users’ Cloud PCs are created. Administrators should validate the policy’s network and image selections, its assignments, and the users’ licensing before expecting provisioning to succeed.
9. What is the provisioning process for a new Enterprise Cloud PC?
- Prepare eligibility: Confirm the user has the required Windows 365 license and belongs to the intended Microsoft Entra group.
- Configure the policy: In Microsoft Intune, create a Windows 365 provisioning policy and select the network, Windows image, and any required optional settings.
- Assign users: Target the policy to the appropriate Microsoft Entra group.
- Monitor status: Check whether the Cloud PC provisions successfully and investigate any reported failure before retrying.
The selected network and join model can add prerequisites, particularly for a deployment using an organization’s Azure network or hybrid join.
10. What happens when an administrator changes a provisioning policy?
A policy change does not retroactively reconfigure Cloud PCs that already exist. Administrators should distinguish between changing the settings used for future provisioning and applying a new configuration to an existing Cloud PC. Do not assume that editing an assigned policy alone changes an already-provisioned user’s desktop.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
11. What happens when a Cloud PC is reprovisioned?
Reprovisioning deletes the existing Cloud PC and creates it again. That removes the old Cloud PC’s data, installed applications, and customizations. Before starting, decide how users’ data and any needed configuration will be retained or restored; do not treat reprovisioning as a non-destructive repair or simple refresh.
12. What should an administrator know about provisioning retries?
When provisioning fails, Windows 365 retries automatically twice before marking the Cloud PC as failed. After the underlying cause has been corrected, an administrator can retry provisioning. A retry without diagnosing the failure can simply reproduce the same problem, so inspect the reported status and relevant configuration first.
Networks and identity
13. How should an organization choose a Windows 365 network model?
Start with the organization’s real connectivity and domain dependencies. Microsoft Hosted Network is the cloud-native starting point when a Microsoft-managed network is appropriate. Azure Network Connection (ANC) is an option when Cloud PCs need connectivity through the organization’s Azure virtual network and related infrastructure. The latter offers a different network integration model and brings additional customer-side setup and support work.
14. What is the difference between Microsoft Hosted Network and ANC?
| Choice | Where the network is managed | When it fits | Key checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Hosted Network | Microsoft manages the underlying network for the Cloud PC deployment. | A cloud-native deployment that does not require Cloud PCs to connect through the organization’s Azure virtual network. | Confirm that Cloud PC VPN, proxy, or secure web gateway settings allow the required service and RDP connectivity. |
| Azure Network Connection | The Cloud PC connects through the organization’s Azure virtual network and related infrastructure. | A deployment with a requirement for that network integration, such as access to organizational network resources. | Check virtual network and subnet capacity, region alignment, endpoints, DNS, domain-controller reachability when needed, and network controls. |
15. Should new Cloud PCs use Microsoft Entra join or hybrid join?
Microsoft recommends Microsoft Entra join as the cloud-native starting point for most new deployments. Hybrid join remains a supported alternative when a domain or application dependency requires it. The decision should follow a documented need rather than an assumption that every Cloud PC must join an on-premises domain.

16. What additional dependencies come with hybrid join?
Hybrid join requires the Cloud PC to reach the organization’s Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) environment. Check DNS resolution for the domain, network reachability to domain controllers, a synchronized identity, and appropriate domain-join permissions. A failure in any of these dependencies can prevent the join even if the user and Windows 365 license are otherwise eligible.
Rank #2
17. What should be checked when setting up a Windows 365 network?
- Whether Microsoft Hosted Network or ANC matches the organization’s connectivity requirements.
- For ANC, whether the virtual network and subnet have suitable address capacity and region alignment.
- Whether required service endpoints are reachable from the Azure virtual network and the Cloud PCs.
- Whether DNS and domain-controller paths are available when hybrid join is used.
- Whether firewalls, network security groups, proxies, secure web gateways, TLS inspection, and VPN routing allow the required traffic.
- Whether expected RDP egress and other network charges are understood for the deployment.
The required network configuration varies with the deployment and workload; validate it against Microsoft’s current Windows 365 network guidance.
18. How does Teams media traffic work with a Cloud PC?
Teams audio and video traffic is offloaded to the user’s endpoint rather than being handled in the same way as the remote desktop’s ordinary session traffic. Network planning should account for that media path as well as the Cloud PC’s RDP connectivity. Do not assume that a successful desktop connection alone verifies the quality of every real-time workload.
Licensing and administration
19. What licenses does a Windows 365 Enterprise user need?
Microsoft’s requirements page lists Windows E3, Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Entra ID P1, and a Windows 365 license for Windows 365 Enterprise users. Requirements can differ by offering and deployment configuration, so verify the current requirements for the chosen edition, join model, and network design rather than applying this Enterprise list to every Windows 365 scenario.
20. Is Windows 365 billed per user or by resource consumption?
For human-use Cloud PCs, Windows 365 is billed through a separate per-user license with fixed monthly billing. Network charges may be additional, depending on the deployment. This describes the service’s billing model, not a guarantee that it is cheaper than another desktop design; total cost depends on workload, utilization, licensing, network, storage, and architecture.
21. Which roles can administer Windows 365 provisioning?
Microsoft lists the Intune Administrator and Windows 365 Administrator roles as able to perform provisioning. Assign administrative roles according to the organization’s access-control practices and the tasks each administrator needs to perform. A user who can use a Cloud PC does not automatically need a provisioning administration role.
22. What does Intune do in a Windows 365 deployment?
Microsoft Intune is used to manage Cloud PCs and is part of the Enterprise requirements Microsoft lists. It also provides the administration context for Windows 365 provisioning policies. Administrators should separate the task of defining who receives a Cloud PC from the ongoing work of managing the provisioned Windows device.
23. Can licensing alone cause a user not to receive a Cloud PC?
Yes. Provisioning depends on both eligibility and assignment: the user needs the appropriate license and must be in the group targeted by the provisioning policy. When no Cloud PC appears, check the user’s license and policy-group membership alongside the policy’s status before assuming the provisioning service is at fault.

Use Microsoft Entra ID for the identity service and Microsoft Intune for endpoint management in current explanations. Windows 365 Frontline has been renamed Windows 365 Flex, although some Intune admin-center labels may still show “Frontline.” Mention the older name only when identifying that legacy label or discussing historical terminology.
Security and data protection
25. What are the main security layers for Windows 365?
Microsoft describes Windows 365 security in terms of access, device, and data. A sound deployment considers who can sign in, how the Cloud PC is configured and protected, and how organizational information is handled. The presence of a hosted desktop does not remove the need to design and administer controls across those layers.
26. How does Conditional Access help secure Windows 365?
Conditional Access is a primary access control for the Windows 365 service. Administrators can use it as part of their identity security design to control access under their organization’s policies. The rules and user experience depend on the organization’s configuration; do not claim a particular Conditional Access policy is automatically applied to every deployment.
27. Are Secure Boot and virtual TPM enabled by default?
Microsoft says new Cloud PCs have Secure Boot and a virtual Trusted Platform Module (TPM) enabled by default. Administrators should still verify the requirements of their security and compliance design and understand which Windows image and configuration the Cloud PC uses.
28. Are Hypervisor Code Integrity and Credential Guard always enabled?
No. Microsoft describes Hypervisor Code Integrity and Microsoft Defender Credential Guard as enabled by default on Cloud PCs running a Windows 11 gallery image. That default should not be generalized to every image or configuration. Check the image and applicable feature requirements when validating the device’s security posture.
Rank #3
29. Does Windows 365 automatically satisfy every security requirement?
No. Some protections are documented defaults for particular Cloud PCs, while other capabilities depend on the SKU or administrator configuration. Map each organizational requirement to its relevant access, device, or data control, then verify its prerequisites and actual configuration rather than relying on a blanket claim that the service enables everything.
30. How should administrators protect data before reprovisioning?
Keep important user data in an approved location and establish an appropriate backup or recovery process before a destructive reprovision. Since reprovisioning removes data, applications, and customizations on the old Cloud PC, decide what must persist and how it will be restored before initiating the operation.
Images and Cloud PC lifecycle
31. Should an administrator use a gallery image or a custom image?
Microsoft’s guidance places a gallery image as the default cloud-native choice and a custom image as an alternative when there is a documented need. A custom image can support an organization-specific requirement, but it also makes the organization responsible for maintaining that image. Choose it for a concrete dependency, not simply because customization is possible.

A custom image is justified when a documented application, configuration, or technical requirement cannot be met appropriately with the available gallery-image approach. The decision should account for the ongoing work of maintaining the image and ensuring it remains fit for the organization’s needs. Avoid assuming a particular update cadence or included application without confirming current image documentation.
33. What is the practical difference between reprovisioning and changing a policy?
Changing a policy affects its configuration for future provisioning; it does not retroactively modify existing Cloud PCs. Reprovisioning deletes and recreates a selected Cloud PC, so it changes that device’s lifecycle and removes its local state. They are not interchangeable administrative actions.
34. What should be planned for Cloud PC disaster recovery?
Plan how users will regain access to essential data and applications if a Cloud PC must be replaced or reprovisioned. Identify which information is stored on the Cloud PC versus in approved persistent services, and document the recovery steps and responsibilities. The provisioning service can create a Cloud PC, but provisioning alone does not restore deleted user data or customizations.
35. How should administrators handle applications and customizations?
Decide how required applications and settings will be made available and maintained across the Cloud PC lifecycle. If they exist only as local installations or customizations on one Cloud PC, a destructive reprovision removes them. Include their deployment or restoration in the lifecycle plan instead of relying on local state to survive.
36. Is Windows 365 Flex the same as a dedicated personal Cloud PC?
No. Business, Enterprise, and Government generally provide one personal Cloud PC per user, while Windows 365 Flex is for non-concurrent shared access. The difference affects the access model and how the organization should plan user assignment and use. Confirm the current offering requirements before designing around a particular Flex scenario.
Connectivity and provisioning troubleshooting
37. What is a useful first step when a Cloud PC connection fails?
Determine the scope: establish whether the problem affects one user, a group, or the broader service. Then check Microsoft service health and whether the client device has working internet connectivity. This separates a potentially broad service or local access problem from an issue tied to a particular user, Cloud PC, or deployment path.
38. How do you troubleshoot a user who cannot access an assigned Cloud PC?
- Check the user’s license and membership in the group assigned to the provisioning policy.
- Review the policy assignment and the Cloud PC’s provisioning or service status.
- Confirm the user’s client and device can reach the internet and the Windows 365 access service.
- Check whether the user can reach the RDP path and whether VPN, proxy, firewall, or secure web gateway rules interfere.
- Use the available Intune and Windows 365 diagnostics to narrow the cause before taking a destructive action.
The correct next step depends on the observed failure; this sequence is a practical triage framework, not a guarantee that one fix resolves every incident.
39. What should be checked when provisioning fails?
Review the Cloud PC’s provisioning status and the assigned policy, then verify the user’s license and group assignment. Check the selected image and network configuration, along with any join-model prerequisites. For ANC deployments, validate endpoints and network paths; for hybrid join, include DNS and domain-controller reachability in the investigation.

40. How can a proxy, VPN, or TLS inspection break connectivity?
These controls can block or alter traffic that Windows 365 needs for service checks, provisioning, or RDP. Microsoft warns that traffic interception can interfere with network checks and provisioning. Review proxy, VPN, firewall, secure web gateway, and TLS inspection behavior against the current endpoint and traffic requirements, and correct the interfering rule before retrying.

41. Why does ANC troubleshooting include both the virtual network and the Cloud PC?
Required service endpoints must be available from both the Azure virtual network and the Cloud PCs in an ANC deployment. A route or policy that works for one side does not prove the other side has the necessary access. Test both paths and inspect relevant network security groups, firewall rules, DNS, and intermediary controls.
42. When should an administrator retry failed provisioning?
Retry only after reviewing the failure and correcting its likely cause. Windows 365 retries an initial provisioning failure twice automatically; once it marks the Cloud PC failed, an administrator can retry after remediation. Repeating the operation without addressing a broken prerequisite risks another failure and does not diagnose the underlying issue.

43. What are the differences between Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365?
| Dimension | Windows 365 | Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) |
|---|---|---|
| Operating model | Managed Cloud PC service; the service creates a personal desktop for an eligible user. | More configurable virtual desktop service with greater infrastructure and architecture choices for the customer to operate. |
| Typical billing framing | Per-user monthly licensing for human-use Cloud PCs; network charges may be additional. | Consumption-based pricing is a common high-level distinction; actual costs depend on the selected architecture and usage. |
| Session model | Business, Enterprise, and Government generally use a personal one-to-one Cloud PC relationship; Flex supports non-concurrent shared access. | Can suit multi-session needs, depending on the design. |
| Customization and control | More managed service experience, with choices such as network and image configuration. | More infrastructure and architecture control, with corresponding operational responsibility. |
| Best comparison question | Does the organization want a managed, user-oriented Cloud PC model? | Does the organization need AVD’s configuration options and have the capability to operate that design? |
This is a high-level distinction, not a universal cost verdict. Compare the actual workload, utilization, licensing, network, storage, and operating responsibilities.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors44. When is Windows 365 a better fit than AVD?
Windows 365 can fit an organization that wants a managed Cloud PC assigned to a user with per-user monthly billing and less responsibility for underlying desktop infrastructure. The suitability depends on the workload and access model. Evaluate whether its available configuration meets the organization’s needs before preferring it for simplicity alone.
45. When might AVD be a better fit?
AVD may fit an organization that needs more infrastructure control, architecture flexibility, or a multi-session design and can operate that environment. More flexibility also means more responsibility for design and ongoing management. The decision should account for staff capability and the full service architecture, not just the headline billing model.
46. What factors influence Windows 365 Cloud PC cost?
Consider the required Windows 365 licenses, the number and type of users, and additional network costs associated with the deployment. A fair comparison with another desktop design also accounts for workload, utilization, licensing, storage, network, and operational architecture. Do not infer a universal savings figure from Windows 365’s fixed monthly human-use billing model.
47. Does fixed monthly billing mean there are no variable costs?
No. The per-user monthly license describes Windows 365 human-use billing, but additional network charges may apply depending on the deployment. Model those charges and other organization-specific costs separately. A fixed subscription component should not be presented as an all-in cost for every network design.
48. How should an organization make the Windows 365 versus AVD decision?
- Choose the user experience and session model the workload requires, including whether multi-session use is important.
- Compare the desired level of infrastructure control with the team’s ability to design and operate it.
- Estimate total costs using actual utilization, licensing, network, storage, and architecture assumptions.
- Document technical, security, regulatory, business, or operational dependencies that justify an exception to a cloud-native starting point.
Advanced interview questions
49. What is Windows 365 Link?
Windows 365 Link is a purpose-built endpoint device for accessing Cloud PCs in select markets. It is optional: users can also connect through supported clients, a browser, or the Windows 365 portal. It is an endpoint choice, not a prerequisite for deploying Cloud PCs or preparing for an administrator interview.
50. What should an administrator consider about RDP egress?
RDP connectivity needs an allowed network path, and egress can incur charges depending on the deployment. Review the current traffic requirements alongside firewall, proxy, VPN, and routing rules. Network planning should reflect the organization’s actual workload and paths rather than assume one fixed cost or configuration applies everywhere.
51. What information should a useful Windows 365 incident report include?
Record the affected user or scope, the Cloud PC’s status, the relevant provisioning policy and assignment, the client and connectivity symptoms, and the checks already performed. For ANC or hybrid-join cases, note the network path, DNS, and domain-controller findings that apply. This gives the next administrator actionable context without treating every connection failure as the same problem.
52. What is the risk of enforcing TLS inspection on Cloud PC traffic?
Traffic interception can interfere with Windows 365 network checks and provisioning. Administrators should review whether TLS inspection or another intermediary is altering required traffic and ensure the network does not disrupt the service. The applicable exclusions or routing changes should follow the current Microsoft requirements for the organization’s deployment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches53. How should an administrator explain the trade-off between cloud-native design and exceptions?
Start with the cloud-native option that meets the need, then document a specific reason for any exception. Microsoft’s deployment guidance asks organizations to base exceptions on actual technical, security, regulatory, business, or operational dependencies. This makes the decision reviewable and avoids carrying forward legacy complexity without a current requirement.
54. What makes a strong Windows 365 troubleshooting answer in an interview?
Give an ordered diagnosis rather than jumping to reprovisioning: establish scope and service health, verify connectivity, check license and group assignment, inspect policy and Cloud PC status, then validate endpoints, RDP, proxy or VPN behavior, and DNS where relevant. Use Intune and Windows 365 diagnostics to support the investigation, and retry provisioning only after correcting the cause. Explain any destructive action and its data impact before recommending it.
