Press Windows key + period (.) to open Windows 11’s emoji panel. It is useful for more than emoji: you can also browse symbols, punctuation, accented characters, GIFs and kaomoji. For clipboard history, use the separate shortcut Windows key + V.
What Windows key + period does
Win + period opens the emoji panel, where you can pick an emoji or explore other character options. Microsoft also documents Windows key + semicolon (;) as an alternative shortcut for opening the panel. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-shortcut list includes both combinations.
The panel is handy when a character is not printed on your keyboard. Microsoft Support notes that you may need a character such as an em dash (—) or copyright symbol (©), and explains how to find characters through the Symbols section. Microsoft’s keyboard tips and tricks describes browsing symbols, including punctuation and accented characters.
Insert a symbol
- Press Windows key + period (.).
- Choose Symbols in the panel.
- Browse and select the character you need.
This is a quick way to insert a less common character without searching for it online or memorizing a code.

Use Windows key + V for clipboard history
Win + V opens clipboard history, a different panel for items you have copied. The first time you use it, select Turn on when prompted. You can also find the setting at Settings > System > Clipboard. Microsoft’s clipboard instructions cover enabling and managing this feature.
After it is enabled, press Win + V and select an entry to paste it. Microsoft documents support for text, HTML and bitmap formats. Clipboard history holds up to 25 copied entries, with a maximum of 4 MB per item; those are Microsoft’s documented feature limits, not performance measurements.

Pin, delete or clear copied items
- Pin an item you want to keep available in the history panel.
- Delete an individual entry you no longer need.
- Clear clipboard history to remove its entries.
Unpinned entries clear when you restart Windows, and older unpinned items can drop off sooner as new copies arrive and the history reaches its limit. Pinned items remain after a restart.

Optional: sync clipboard text across devices
To use clipboard history across devices, go to Settings > System > Clipboard and enable Clipboard history across your devices. The devices must use the same Microsoft account or work account. Microsoft documents two options: automatic syncing of copied text, or manually selecting particular text items to sync. Manual sync uploads the selected text to the cloud.
