Microsoft says a Windows 11 memory-management update can keep up to 2GB more active data in RAM on computers with 8GB of memory, reducing how often Windows moves data to slower storage. On systems with 8GB or less, Widgets now load only when opened, which Microsoft says makes more than 200MB available for applications. The changes are beginning a broad rollout after testing with Windows Insiders, but Microsoft has not published one universal build number or guaranteed identical savings on every device.

What the Windows 11 change does

When physical memory fills, Windows can move less-active data to the page file on an SSD or hard drive. That preserves functionality but can make switching between applications and browser tabs feel slow. Microsoft’s updated memory management is intended to keep more active data in RAM instead.

Microsoft says the change can keep up to 2GB more active data in memory on PCs with 8GB of RAM. That is an announced maximum expectation, not a measured result for every model. The actual effect depends on the applications you run, storage speed, drivers and other hardware.

Widgets now load on demand

On PCs with 8GB of memory or less, Windows 11 Widgets load only when you open them, according to Microsoft. The company says this makes more than 200MB of memory available for apps and other work while Widgets are closed. You give up continuously running Widget content, but you can still open the panel when needed.

Who is most likely to notice

The clearest beneficiaries are Windows 11 laptops and compact PCs with 8GB of RAM that become sluggish when several applications or many browser tabs are open. Keeping more active data in memory can reduce paging during those bursts of activity.

Owners of systems with more than 8GB may still receive the broader memory-footprint improvements, but Microsoft specifically ties the on-demand Widgets behavior to computers with 8GB or less. A machine with a failing drive, limited processor performance, thermal throttling or unusually heavy software may not feel materially faster.

Rollout and Windows 11 requirements

Microsoft described the work on October 15, 2026, saying improvements developed with Windows Insiders were “now beginning to roll out broadly.” The announcement does not identify a single build number, release channel or complete device-by-device rollout schedule. Install the latest updates available to your PC, but do not assume that every Windows 11 installation has received the change on the same day.

Windows 11’s stated minimum memory requirement remains 4GB. A computer meeting that minimum can run Windows, but modern browsers and productivity applications can still exhaust available RAM quickly. Microsoft advises checking the computer manufacturer or a retailer for compatible memory when an upgrade is possible.

How to check whether your PC benefits

  1. Install updates and restart. Open Settings, choose Windows Update, select Check for updates, install anything offered, and restart.
  2. Record current memory use. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. In Processes, sort by the Memory column; in Performance, select Memory to watch total use and available memory.
  3. Repeat your normal workload. Open the applications and browser tabs that usually cause slowdown. Compare responsiveness and memory pressure after the update rather than relying on a single idle reading.
  4. Leave Widgets closed if you do not use them. On qualifying systems, Microsoft says they are no longer loaded continuously, so opening the panel is the point at which their resources are needed.

Additional ways to reduce memory pressure

Disable unnecessary startup programs

In Task Manager, open Startup apps. Right-click a program you do not need immediately after sign-in and choose Disable. Keep security software, hardware utilities and tools required for work enabled; disabling a startup entry does not uninstall the application.

Stop unneeded background permissions

Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, select an application’s menu, choose Advanced options, then set Background app permissions to Never when the app does not need to run while unused. This can reduce background activity, but it may delay notifications or synchronization.

Find the process consuming memory

Use Task Manager’s Processes view to identify unusually large consumers and its Performance view to determine whether memory is consistently near capacity. Save work before ending a process, and do not terminate Windows or security processes simply because they appear near the top of the list.

Software optimization versus adding RAM

Option What it can change Trade-offs
Windows update and on-demand Widgets Microsoft reports up to 2GB more active data retained in RAM on 8GB PCs; more than 200MB available when Widgets are closed on systems with 8GB or less. Figures are not independent benchmarks or guarantees; rollout timing varies.
Startup and background cleanup Reduces programs competing for memory after sign-in or while idle. May remove instant access, automatic synchronization or notifications.
Physical RAM upgrade Raises the system’s memory capacity and can reduce paging during sustained multitasking. Depends on available slots, maximum capacity, memory type, speed and the laptop generation; compatibility must be verified.
Faster storage Can make unavoidable paging less noticeable. Does not create additional RAM and will not necessarily reproduce Microsoft’s reported savings.

When an 8GB upgrade is the better answer

If Task Manager repeatedly shows memory nearly full during your normal work, and the computer remains slow after updates and background cleanup, more RAM is the durable hardware remedy when the system supports it. For a laptop, check the manufacturer’s specifications for a compatible 8GB SODIMM module and confirm the number of slots, supported generation, speed and maximum capacity before buying. Some systems have soldered memory or no free slot, in which case an upgrade may be impossible.

Microsoft’s guidance is to consult the manufacturer or a retailer for compatible RAM. Do not infer compatibility from capacity alone: a physically similar module can still be electrically or firmware-incompatible.

What the announcement does—and does not—promise

  • The 2GB figure applies to Microsoft’s description of 8GB PCs and is an “up to” value.
  • The 200MB-plus figure describes memory made available when Widgets are closed on PCs with 8GB or less.
  • No independent benchmark, reproducible test procedure or device-specific compatibility list accompanies the announcement.
  • Microsoft has not specified a universal build number or exact completion date for the broad rollout.

For an 8GB Windows 11 PC, install current updates and observe your own workload first. If memory pressure remains a daily bottleneck, verify hardware compatibility and consider adding RAM rather than expecting software changes alone to overcome a physical capacity limit.
