Microsoft’s notes for Windows 11’s August 11, 2026 update, KB5121003, do not list a general shutdown or power-button fix. The update does document a separate gaming issue involving certain RGB-related drivers. A secondary summary attributes a shutdown fix to the update, but Microsoft’s published notes do not confirm that claim.

Which Windows 11 August update is being discussed?

The likely reference is Microsoft’s August 11, 2026 update, KB5121003, for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. It corresponds to builds 26100.9168 and 26200.9168, respectively. Microsoft’s release history lists the date and build mapping for those Windows releases at Windows 11 release information.

Microsoft describes KB5121003 as providing security improvements. Its published notes do not identify a general shutdown, power-button, or fans-stay-running fix.

What issue does Microsoft say the update addresses?

The documented issue is about some games becoming unresponsive, closing unexpectedly, or causing an unexpected device restart on systems with certain RGB-capable peripherals or internal components. Microsoft identifies the inpoutx64 driver as part of the problem and says its resolution blocks that driver from loading on affected devices.

Microsoft says this mitigation is automatic on consumer devices and business devices that are not managed by IT. Enterprise-managed devices do not receive it automatically. The listed issue and resolution are in Microsoft’s KB5121003 notes.

Does KB5121003 fix PCs that appear to shut down but keep running?

A daily.dev summary attributed to XDA Developers describes PCs whose screens go dark while fans continue running, and says Windows power-plan settings were involved. It also characterizes the fix as rolling out in stages. That is a secondary account; the underlying XDA article text was not available in the summary, and Microsoft’s KB5121003 notes do not corroborate a general shutdown fix or that explanation.

So the specific claim that KB5121003 fixes a power-button shutdown bug remains unverified by the official release notes. The documented driver mitigation for certain game problems should not be treated as proof of a shutdown fix.

How to check whether your PC has the update

  1. Check your Windows version and build: Open Settings, go to System > About, and look under Windows specifications. Compare the version and OS build with Microsoft’s Windows 11 release history.
  2. Check Windows Update: Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Microsoft also lists Windows Update for Business and the Microsoft Update Catalog as distribution channels for KB5121003.
  3. If your PC is managed by your organization: Ask IT whether the update or relevant mitigation has been deployed. Microsoft says enterprise-managed devices do not receive the documented inpoutx64 mitigation automatically.

Having build 26100.9168 or 26200.9168 identifies the corresponding listed update build for 24H2 or 25H2; it does not establish that Microsoft has documented a general shutdown fix in that update.
