Neither operating system is universally better. Windows 11 is usually the safer choice when an older PC officially meets Microsoft’s requirements and you depend on Windows-only applications, games, or peripherals. Linux is often the more practical way to keep a computer useful when it cannot officially run Windows 11, provided your essential software and hardware work with the distribution and desktop you choose.
Start by checking the exact PC model, processor, memory, storage, firmware, graphics, Wi-Fi, printer, and other devices. Then compare the requirements and support lifetime of a specific Linux edition—not an imaginary, one-size-fits-all “Linux.” Try Linux from a bootable USB before replacing Windows so you can test networking, sound, display, and peripherals without committing to an installation.
Windows 11 or Linux: the short answer
Choose Windows 11 if the PC is officially eligible and your important work depends on Windows software, Windows gaming support, or established Windows device drivers. Choose Linux if the computer is ineligible for Windows 11, your workload is mostly web, documents, media, programming, or other Linux-compatible tasks, and you are willing to verify application and peripheral compatibility.

Do not treat the minimum numbers as speed tests. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements describe eligibility to install, while Linux projects publish requirements for particular editions and levels of comfort. Actual responsiveness depends on the processor, memory, storage health, graphics driver, desktop environment, applications, and configuration. The available evidence does not establish that Linux is always faster than Windows on older hardware.

| Question | What favors Windows 11 | What favors Linux |
|---|---|---|
| Can the PC be officially supported? | The processor is on Microsoft’s approved list and the machine has the required TPM 2.0, UEFI/Secure Boot capability, memory, storage, and graphics support. | The PC fails Windows 11 eligibility but can run a suitable Linux distribution and its devices work in a live test. |
| What software is essential? | A required application, game, school tool, business system, or device utility is Windows-only. | Your work is browser-based or the required applications have Linux versions or acceptable alternatives. |
| How much change is acceptable? | You want the familiar Windows interface and established workflow. | You accept learning a different desktop, application set, and support process. |
| How long must the installation remain supported? | You can use a supported Windows 11 edition and update normally. | You select a supported Linux release and track its published end date. |
Check the older PC before choosing an operating system
Record the actual hardware
Write down the exact model and processor, installed RAM, storage capacity and condition, graphics hardware, display resolution, Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter, sound hardware, printer, scanner, webcam, and any specialized USB devices. Requirements for an operating system cannot prove that a particular laptop’s firmware or a particular printer will work. The model number is also important if you later need manufacturer documentation for firmware settings or drivers.
Check Windows 11 eligibility
Microsoft’s current requirements include all of the following:
- A 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores that appears on Microsoft’s approved CPU list.
- At least 4 GB of RAM.
- At least 64 GB of storage.
- UEFI firmware capable of Secure Boot.
- TPM 2.0.
- DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
- A display larger than 9 inches with at least 720p resolution.
See Microsoft’s full, changing list of conditions in Windows 11 System Requirements. Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check or Windows Update on the machine itself; a specification copied from a similar model is not enough.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →These are installation minimums, not a promise of comfortable performance. A machine that passes may still feel slow with limited memory, a failing hard drive, heavy startup software, or demanding applications.
Account for Windows 10’s ended support
Windows 10 version 22H2 reached the end of ordinary servicing on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that after this date Windows 10 no longer receives normal security updates, feature updates, or technical support. Microsoft also offers an Extended Security Updates program for individual consumers, but eligibility, terms, and pricing can change. Check the current details in Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle FAQ before treating ESU as a long-term plan.
Continuing with an unsupported Windows 10 installation is therefore a support and security decision, not merely a performance choice. If the PC cannot run Windows 11, compare the current ESU option with moving to a supported Linux release rather than assuming Windows 10 remains covered.

What the published Linux requirements really mean
“Linux” names a family of distributions and desktop environments. Their requirements differ, so compare the exact edition you intend to install.
| Edition or release | Published memory figures | Published storage figures | Published support information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linux Mint (current FAQ figures) | 2 GB minimum; 4 GB recommended for comfortable use | 20 GB minimum; 100 GB recommended | Mint says LTS releases are supported for five years |
| Linux Mint 22.2 “Zara” | 2 GB minimum; 4 GB recommended | 20 GB minimum; 100 GB recommended | Linux Mint announced support until 2029 |
| Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS | 2 GHz dual-core processor and 6 GB RAM for a comfortable experience | 25 GB free space | Five years of security updates and critical bug fixes, through April 2031; Ubuntu Pro provides ten years of ESM |
| Official lower-spec Ubuntu flavors | Canonical says Xubuntu or Lubuntu can be installed on systems with 2 GB RAM or more | Not stated in the cited release notes | Check the individual flavor’s release support terms |
Linux Mint’s requirements and five-year LTS statement are in its official FAQ. The 22.2 announcement, dated September 4, 2025, is at Linux Mint’s release blog; do not assume it remains the newest release without checking the project’s current release page.
Canonical’s Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release notes list the standard desktop figures and explicitly advise lower-spec users to consider an official flavor such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu. Canonical’s figures describe a comfortable Ubuntu Desktop experience, not a universal minimum for every Linux desktop.
When Windows 11 is the better fit
The PC passes the official checks
If PC Health Check or Windows Update confirms eligibility, Windows 11 avoids the uncertainty of running an unsupported configuration. You retain the Windows driver model, familiar administration tools, and the existing application environment, subject to each application’s own support policy.
Your work depends on Windows software
List every non-negotiable program before changing operating systems: accounting or engineering software, employer-managed tools, school applications, specialized plug-ins, games, and utilities for a printer or scanner. Verify compatibility with the software or hardware vendor. The requirements and support sources here do not provide an application-by-application compatibility list.

You need the least workflow change
Windows familiarity has practical value. If several people share the computer, or if support is provided by someone who knows Windows, retaining that environment may outweigh the potential flexibility of Linux. This is a user and workload decision, not proof that Windows is inherently easier for everyone.

Remember the setup requirement
Microsoft states that “Windows 11 Pro for personal use and Windows 11 Home require internet connectivity and a Microsoft account during initial device setup.” This applies to personal-use Home and Pro setup as described on Microsoft’s requirements page; organizational deployment rules can differ.
When Linux is the better fit
The computer is excluded from Windows 11
An older processor, missing TPM 2.0, legacy firmware, or another failed requirement can make the official Windows 11 path unavailable. Linux distributions have different hardware expectations, so an ineligible Windows PC may still be useful with a suitable Linux desktop.
Your tasks are compatible
Linux can be a good match for web browsing, email, office documents, coding, local media, and other workloads that have Linux applications or browser-based services. Confirm your exact workflow first, including file formats, plug-ins, collaboration systems, and any required fonts or device utilities.

You can select an appropriate desktop
Standard Ubuntu Desktop’s published comfortable-use figure is 6 GB of RAM, while Linux Mint recommends 4 GB for comfortable use. On a machine with only 2 GB, an official lighter Ubuntu flavor may be a more realistic Ubuntu-family choice than the standard GNOME desktop. A distribution’s name alone does not tell you how demanding its desktop will be.
You want a supported alternative after Windows 10
A supported Linux release gives you a maintained operating system without relying on an unsupported Windows 10 installation. Compare the exact release end date: Linux Mint says LTS releases receive five years of support; Ubuntu 26.04 LTS lists standard support through April 2031, with Ubuntu Pro’s longer ESM offering subject to its own terms.

| Item to check | Questions to answer | How to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Work or school applications | Is there a Linux version, browser version, or supported alternative? Are particular plug-ins required? | Read the vendor’s current support page and test the workflow in a Linux live session where practical. |
| Games | Does the game, launcher, anti-cheat system, and controller work on the chosen distribution? | Check the publisher’s support information and test the specific titles you cannot replace. |
| Printers and scanners | Can the device print, scan, duplex, use the intended paper sizes, and expose all required controls? | Check the manufacturer’s Linux support and run a live-session print or scan test. |
| Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, and webcam | Are the adapters detected and stable after boot? | Connect and use each device from the live environment before installation. |
| Specialized USB hardware | Does it need a Windows-only driver, firmware tool, or management application? | Confirm with the device vendor; a generic USB connection does not guarantee Linux support. |
Do not infer compatibility from the fact that Linux starts successfully. A live session can show basic hardware behavior, but specialized features may still require vendor-specific testing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTest Linux without replacing Windows
Canonical’s official Ubuntu guidance supports creating bootable USB installation media and trying the desktop before installing. A USB flash drive is optional if you already have suitable media; its role here is to hold the installer, not to make the older computer faster.
- Back up important data. Copy documents, photos, browser data, license information, and any recovery keys to separate storage. Do not begin an installation until you can recover the files independently.
- Choose a specific distribution and desktop. Match the edition to the PC’s RAM and your application needs. For Ubuntu, compare standard Desktop with the lower-spec flavors Canonical identifies; for Mint, check the current release and support date rather than relying on an old image.
- Download the installer from the project’s official page. Ubuntu’s desktop download and installation instructions are at ubuntu.com/download/desktop. Follow the project’s instructions for creating bootable USB media.
- Boot from the USB. Use the PC maker’s documented boot-menu key or firmware instructions. If the machine refuses to boot, confirm that the image was written correctly and consult the manufacturer’s firmware documentation rather than changing settings blindly.
- Run the live session. Select the option to try the desktop without installing. This keeps the existing installation in place while you evaluate the candidate system.
- Test the hardware and workload. Connect to Wi-Fi, play sound, adjust display resolution, check sleep and wake behavior, pair Bluetooth devices, use the webcam, plug in USB equipment, and test essential files or web services.
- Decide only after testing. If an essential device or application fails, try a different supported Linux edition or remain with Windows while investigating a supported solution. Do not erase the existing system simply because the live desktop appears.
How to make the decision by scenario
An eligible PC used for Windows-only work
Stay with Windows 11. Confirm the machine passes Microsoft’s official checks, update the firmware and drivers through the PC manufacturer where appropriate, and verify that the applications remain supported. Linux is not an advantage if it prevents essential work.
An ineligible PC used mostly for web and documents
Test Linux Mint or a suitably light Linux desktop from USB. If networking, graphics, sound, printing, and your document workflow work in the live session, Linux may provide a supported path after Windows 10’s ordinary support ended.
A very limited PC with 2 GB of RAM
Do not install standard Ubuntu Desktop solely because another Linux distribution starts on the same machine. Canonical points lower-spec users toward Xubuntu or Lubuntu, and Linux Mint lists 2 GB as a minimum but 4 GB as its comfortable-use recommendation. Test the exact edition you plan to keep.
A mixed household computer
List each person’s required applications and devices. One person’s browser-based workload does not prove that another person’s school software, game, scanner, or work VPN will function. Choose the operating system that satisfies every essential requirement, or postpone the change until a replacement workflow is verified.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing “can install” with “will feel good”
Passing a minimum requirement does not guarantee responsive performance. Check storage health, background applications, memory pressure, and the demands of your actual workload. Similarly, a Linux distribution’s minimum is not a measured speed comparison with Windows.
Assuming all Linux distributions are equally light
Compare the published figures for the named distribution and desktop. Standard Ubuntu Desktop and Linux Mint publish different comfortable-use guidance, and Ubuntu’s official flavors exist partly to address lower-spec hardware.
Using an unsupported Windows 11 workaround as the default answer
A workaround that bypasses an eligibility check does not turn unsupported hardware into a supported configuration. If Microsoft identifies the PC as ineligible, treat that as a support risk and compare a supported Linux release or the current Windows 10 ESU option instead.

A clean installation can expose Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, printer, or suspend problems that were not obvious from a specification sheet. Boot the live environment and test the devices you actually use.
Choosing by RAM alone
Memory matters, but so do the processor, storage condition, graphics driver, firmware, and applications. A PC with 4 GB of RAM can still be a poor Windows 11 experience, while a Linux installation can still fail if a required peripheral lacks support.
A practical final checklist
- Record the exact PC model and all critical components.
- Run Microsoft’s Windows 11 eligibility check and note the failed requirement, if any.
- Confirm whether each essential application, game, printer, scanner, and adapter supports the candidate Linux edition.
- Compare the exact release’s support end date, not just the distribution name.
- Back up personal files and recovery information.
- Create official bootable USB media and run a live session.
- Test networking, display, audio, webcam, Bluetooth, printing, storage, and essential workflows.
- Install only after the live test meets your requirements.
The best answer for an older PC is therefore conditional: use officially supported Windows 11 when compatibility and eligibility make it the least risky fit; use a tested, appropriately light Linux distribution when Windows 11 is unavailable and your workload supports the change.
