Start by checking whether the exact computer is officially eligible for Windows 11. Microsoft requires a supported 64-bit processor, TPM 2.0, UEFI Secure Boot capability and other hardware conditions; age, a “fast enough” impression or a RAM upgrade alone does not establish eligibility. If the PC qualifies, supported Windows 11 is the straightforward path. If it does not, the realistic choices are an applicable Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, a compatible Windows 11 computer, or a Linux distribution such as Linux Mint after you test your applications and peripherals.

Linux can be a sensible way to keep an older computer useful, but published minimum requirements are not performance benchmarks. No official matched-hardware test establishes that Linux is universally faster than Windows 11. Use a live USB session to test the actual machine and workload before replacing the installed system.

What the choice looks like in 2026

Windows 10 version 22H2 and the listed editions reached the end of standard support on October 14, 2025. PCs still boot and run, but devices outside an applicable extended program no longer receive ordinary security fixes or Microsoft technical assistance. That makes an unsupported Windows 10 installation a poor long-term security plan for a computer used online.

The decision is therefore not simply “which operating system feels lighter?” It is a support and compatibility decision:

Situation Most defensible next step
The exact PC passes Microsoft’s Windows 11 checks Install or remain on supported Windows 11, after confirming application and peripheral support.
The PC fails Windows 11 but is eligible for a current Windows 10 ESU offer Verify the ESU terms for your edition and country, then use ESU only as a defined transition period.
The PC fails Windows 11 and required software works on Linux Test Linux Mint (or another distribution) from USB, then install if the live session handles your normal tasks.
The PC fails Windows 11 and depends on Windows-only applications or devices Investigate a compatible replacement or a supported Windows computer before erasing the old installation.

Microsoft does not recommend installing Windows 11 below its minimum requirements. Such a device may have compatibility problems, may lack Microsoft support and is not guaranteed to receive updates, including security updates. An unofficial installation is therefore not equivalent to a supported Windows 11 upgrade.

Check Windows 11 eligibility on the exact computer

Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check application or the eligibility information in Windows Update. These checks evaluate the actual model rather than guessing from its age or advertised speed. Record the computer’s make and model first, because the manufacturer’s service documentation is needed to understand upgrade limits.

Windows 11 minimum hardware requirements

Component Microsoft minimum What to verify
Processor Compatible 64-bit processor or system on a chip, 1 GHz or faster, with two or more cores Whether the exact processor appears on Microsoft’s supported list; clock speed alone is not enough.
Memory 4 GB RAM Installed RAM and whether the computer allows a supported upgrade.
Storage 64 GB Free space and the drive’s health; the requirement is capacity, not a promise of good performance.
Firmware UEFI capable of Secure Boot Whether the firmware supports the required mode and can be configured safely.
Security chip TPM version 2.0 Presence and enabled state in firmware; a missing TPM 2.0 cannot be fixed by adding RAM.
Graphics DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver Availability of a compatible driver for the exact graphics hardware.
Display 720p display larger than 9 inches The built-in or attached screen’s size and resolution.

Some Windows features and applications require more than these minimums. Home and personal-use Pro editions also require internet access and a Microsoft account during initial setup. A computer can pass the basic check and still feel slow with demanding applications, a failing hard drive or insufficient free space.

Why a RAM upgrade may not solve an ineligible PC

Microsoft notes that some computers can receive a memory upgrade, but adding RAM does not change an unsupported processor, add TPM 2.0 or create UEFI Secure Boot capability. Check the exact model’s service manual for memory type, maximum capacity and whether the modules are replaceable. Treat a RAM purchase as worthwhile only after confirming that the machine supports it and that memory is the actual bottleneck.

Understand the Windows 10 end-of-support situation

Microsoft’s lifecycle notice identifies October 14, 2025 as the end of support for Windows 10 version 22H2 and the listed editions. Outside an applicable ESU program, ordinary security updates and technical assistance have ended. Microsoft’s current support guidance says the operating system continues to function, but continued operation is not the same as continued security maintenance.

Extended Security Updates

Microsoft describes an ESU path for eligible consumer devices. Eligibility, enrollment conditions, geography, pricing and the final coverage date can vary, so check the current terms for the exact edition and region before relying on ESU. ESU is a time-limited bridge, not a way to make old hardware eligible for Windows 11.

When replacement is the safer Windows choice

If the processor is not supported and the PC cannot run required software on Linux, replacing the computer with a Windows 11-compatible model is the supported route. Before buying, verify the new model’s processor generation, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot-capable UEFI, memory, storage and the ports needed by your devices. A replacement also avoids spending on upgrades that cannot resolve the central eligibility failure.

What Linux Mint and Ubuntu actually require

Linux is a family of operating systems, not one hardware target. Requirements differ by distribution and release. Two commonly considered desktop options publish these figures:

Distribution and published page Minimum processor or memory Minimum storage Other published details
Linux Mint (official FAQ) 2 GB RAM minimum; 4 GB recommended 20 GB minimum; 100 GB recommended for comfortable use 1024×768 minimum display; Mint says LTS releases receive five years of support.
Linux Mint 22.3 Zena (current release listing) Uses the Mint requirements above Uses the Mint requirements above LTS support is listed through April 2029.
Ubuntu Desktop (current download page) 2 GHz dual-core processor and 6 GB system memory 25 GB free disk space USB port or DVD drive needed for installer media.

These are distribution-specific minimums, not a controlled comparison. Mint’s lower published memory figure does not prove that it will be faster on your computer, and Ubuntu’s figures should not be generalized to every Linux distribution. Desktop environment, graphics drivers, storage condition, background services and the applications you run all affect the result.

Compare the two paths by the questions that matter

Support and security

Supported Windows 11 has Microsoft’s update and support channel when the hardware passes the requirements. An ineligible installation has no such assurance. Linux Mint’s LTS releases have a stated five-year support period; for Mint 22.3, the release listing gives April 2029 as the support endpoint. Whichever system you select, leave security updates enabled and monitor the release’s published support date.

Applications

Make a list of every application you actually use, including accounting tools, specialist business software, games, accessibility utilities and browser extensions. Do not assume a Windows-only program has a native Linux version. A web application may work in either system, while a program that depends on a particular Windows driver or integration may not. Confirm the vendor’s Linux support or an acceptable replacement before deleting Windows.

Peripherals and drivers

Printers, scanners, Wi-Fi adapters, fingerprint readers, graphics tablets, label printers and specialized USB devices can be more important than the operating system’s headline requirements. Identify the exact model of each device. A live session can reveal whether basic hardware works, but it cannot certify every firmware update, advanced scan mode or vendor utility.

Performance

Neither Microsoft’s minimums nor Linux distribution minimums promise smooth operation. A computer with a mechanical hard drive, thermal problems, failing storage or very little free space can perform poorly under either system. Linux may feel more responsive in some configurations, especially with a lighter desktop environment, but the official material available here does not establish a universal Windows-versus-Linux speed advantage.

Cost and effort

The operating system download and installation media for Linux Mint or Ubuntu do not require a purchase price on their official paths. The real costs are time, backups, learning a different desktop and resolving application or peripheral incompatibilities. Windows may require no migration effort when the PC is eligible, but an ineligible device can lead to ESU administration or replacement expense.

Use a live USB before installing Linux

Both Ubuntu and Linux Mint document booting a temporary live system from USB. This lets you inspect the desktop and test hardware without changing the installed drive. You need a suitable USB flash drive for the installer image, the chosen distribution’s ISO, and a second copy of important files stored away from the PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the current system. Write down the PC model, processor, RAM, storage capacity, graphics adapter, Wi-Fi chipset, printer and other critical devices. Export application data and browser information that you will need after a change.
  2. Back up before experimenting. Copy documents, photos, password-manager exports, email archives and configuration files to an external drive or trusted backup service. A live session is designed to be temporary, but installation mistakes or drive failure can still cause data loss.
  3. Obtain the ISO from the distribution’s official download path. Choose the release you intend to support, not an obsolete image found on a third-party mirror. Keep the download and release information with your backup notes.
  4. Create bootable USB media. Use a USB-writing utility appropriate to your current operating system. The process erases the selected USB drive, so confirm its identity before starting. The drive only needs to be suitable for the ISO; no particular brand or capacity is established here.
  5. Boot the test computer from USB. Restart and use the manufacturer’s boot-menu key, or select the USB device in UEFI firmware. If it does not appear, try another USB port and check that the image was written successfully. Do not change firmware settings you do not understand; record any setting before altering it.
  6. Test the real workload. Check the display at its native resolution, Wi-Fi, wired networking, sound, keyboard, touchpad, webcam, Bluetooth, sleep and wake, external monitors, printers and removable storage. Open the browser and perform the tasks you listed, including access to cloud files and any web applications.
  7. Check persistence-sensitive features cautiously. A live session may use generic drivers and may not contain your complete application stack. Test the functions you cannot compromise, but treat a successful boot as evidence of basic compatibility rather than a guarantee of production readiness.
  8. Shut down and decide. If a required device or application fails, investigate that specific issue before installing. If the live session meets your needs, make a current backup and follow the distribution’s installer instructions.

Prepare an installation or migration plan

Keep a rollback path

Do not begin until you can restore your files and reinstall the applications you need. Keep the original Windows recovery media or recovery partition information if you may need to return to Windows. Confirm that you know how to access firmware and the boot menu before changing partitions.

Plan for identity and data

List browser profiles, email accounts, cloud-sync folders, SSH keys, software licenses and locally stored databases. A file copied to an external drive is not useful if you cannot also recover the password or application that opens it. Test opening a sample of the backup on another device.

Expect a learning period

Linux Mint provides a familiar desktop layout, but package installation, system settings and hardware utilities may differ from Windows. Reserve time to learn update management, printer setup and file locations. If another person relies on the computer, involve them in the live-session test rather than switching without warning.

Decision guide for common older-PC scenarios

The PC passes every Windows 11 check

Stay with supported Windows 11 if your critical applications and devices are compatible. Check storage health and available space before upgrading, because meeting the 64 GB capacity minimum does not guarantee comfortable operation. If the system is already unstable, repair or replace failing hardware before changing operating systems.

The PC fails only on memory and the model supports an upgrade

Confirm the exact RAM specification and maximum capacity in the manufacturer’s documentation. Memory may improve multitasking, but reassess Windows 11 eligibility afterward; the processor, TPM, Secure Boot, graphics and storage checks still apply.

The PC fails on processor, TPM or firmware

Do not treat an unofficial Windows 11 installation as supported. Test Linux Mint or another suitable distribution from USB, verify your applications and peripherals, and compare the migration effort with the cost of a compatible replacement.

The PC is used for one indispensable Windows application

Identify whether that application has a supported Linux release or a browser-based edition. If not, retain a supported Windows environment or replace the computer. Do not erase a working installation until the critical workflow has been demonstrated on the proposed system.

The PC is mostly a browser, documents and media machine

A live Linux session is especially useful here because you can test browsers, cloud storage, audio, video, display scaling and Wi-Fi directly. Confirm the formats and services you rely on, then install only after the backup and recovery plan is complete.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Judging eligibility by age: A newer-looking computer can fail TPM or processor checks, while an older model may pass. Use PC Health Check or Windows Update on the exact device.
  • Equating minimums with speed: Requirements describe a floor for installation, not a benchmark. Storage health, drivers and workload can dominate the experience.
  • Assuming unsupported Windows 11 will stay patched: Microsoft explicitly warns that updates, including security updates, are not guaranteed on hardware below requirements.
  • Skipping the application inventory: A successful Linux boot does not prove that a specialized Windows program, printer utility or accessibility tool will work.
  • Installing without a verified backup: A copied folder is not a tested recovery. Open backup samples and retain credentials and license information.
  • Ignoring support dates: Note the release and its end date. Mint 22.3 is listed through April 2029; plan the next upgrade before that date.
  • Changing firmware blindly: Secure Boot and boot-mode changes can affect an existing installation. Record settings and use the manufacturer’s documentation.

Security and maintenance after the choice

On supported Windows 11, install updates through Windows Update and keep the built-in security protections active. On Linux, use the distribution’s update tools and apply security updates promptly. Remove software you no longer need, use a standard user account for routine work where practical, and maintain offline or otherwise independent backups.

Keep a short record containing the operating-system release, support end date, recovery method, backup location and the hardware devices that were tested. That record turns a future failure or support deadline into a manageable maintenance task instead of an emergency.

Bottom-line selection

Choose supported Windows 11 when the exact PC passes Microsoft’s requirements and your software and devices depend on Windows. Choose Linux Mint when the PC is ineligible, your essential workload is compatible, and a live USB test succeeds; Mint 22.3 is listed for support through April 2029. Use Windows 10 ESU only if your device and region qualify and you accept its limited, time-bound role. If neither Linux compatibility nor ESU meets your needs, replacing the computer is safer than relying on an unsupported Windows 11 installation.
