If Voice Isolation is not helping in Windows 11 Voice Access, first confirm the selected filtering mode and finish Voice Isolation’s one-time setup. Then verify the microphone Voice Access is using and check Windows microphone access and input level. Voice Isolation is designed to separate your voice from other speakers and background noise; it is not the same as the option that removes non-speech sounds only.
Confirm Voice Isolation is selected in Voice Access
- Open the Voice Access bar and select its settings menu.
- Choose Improve speech recognition.
- Check which filtering mode is selected. Select Voice Isolation if you want Voice Access to focus on your voice in the presence of other speakers and background noise. Microsoft’s Voice Isolation instructions describe the available modes and setup.
Voice Access has three distinct choices:

Complete or redo the Voice Isolation setup
If you have not set it up
Choose Voice Isolation under Improve speech recognition, select Proceed, and let the model download finish. Then complete the voice recording. Internet access is needed for the initial download; after setup, Microsoft says speech processing and the voice signature remain on the device. Wait for the setup confirmation before testing the feature.
If it is enabled but recognition is poor
Open Manage Voice Isolation in Voice Access settings and use the option to record your voice again. A new recording may help if the existing sample does not match how you are speaking or the microphone you are using. If you delete the voice signature, you must complete setup again before using Voice Isolation.

Check the microphone Voice Access is using
During Voice Isolation setup, Windows presents a microphone-selection step. If the PC has more than one input, make sure the intended microphone is connected and selected; you can choose another available input or open Sound settings from that step. A laptop’s built-in microphone, a monitor microphone, and a connected headset can all be different inputs, so check the selected device rather than assuming Windows is using the one closest to you. Check microphone permission and input level
If speech is not reaching Windows reliably, check that microphone access is allowed in Windows privacy settings and that the selected input’s level is high enough to capture your voice. Microsoft presents these as general voice-typing checks, not as a confirmed diagnosis for Voice Isolation specifically. Its voice-typing troubleshooting guidance covers microphone access and input-level checks.
If the built-in microphone seems to provide weak or inconsistent input, testing with a headset or external microphone can help determine whether the input device is the issue. Microsoft suggests this as general voice-typing troubleshooting; it does not establish that buying a headset will fix Voice Isolation.

Choose the filtering mode that matches the problem
- Nearby people are disrupting recognition: Try Voice Isolation after its setup is complete.
- Typing, tapping, or knocking is the main distraction: Try Remove background noise only; it targets non-speech sounds and does not require the Voice Isolation recording.
- The room is already quiet: You may hear little difference from Voice Isolation because there is little background sound to filter. Compare with No filtering to see whether filtering changes recognition in your setup.
Voice Isolation works best when you are the primary speaker and background noise is moderate. It can still make recognition errors in very noisy settings. Overlapping speech may be picked up; a speaker talking immediately before or after you may briefly be captured; and voices that sound similar can be harder to distinguish. These are limits of the feature, not proof that setup failed.
If Voice Access listens but does not respond
Check that Windows and Voice Access are up to date, then retest after confirming the selected microphone and filtering mode. Microsoft’s Voice Access “What’s new” notes report that updates fixed some cases of Voice Access listening without responding and error state 9001, but they do not identify one update as a universal fix for Voice Isolation problems.

If you can reproduce the problem after those checks, send feedback through Feedback Hub under Accessibility > Voice Access, including what happens, the selected microphone and mode, and whether Voice Isolation setup completed. Microsoft directs Voice Access feedback through that category in its Voice Access guidance.

Voice Access is available in Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. Its initial setup requires internet access for language files and setup; Microsoft says Voice Access uses on-device speech recognition and can work offline afterward. The documented language list can change, so check the current Voice Access setup page if language availability matters.

Microsoft says the Voice Isolation signature is created and stored locally, and the voice recordings are not uploaded or shared. The feature learns characteristics of the speaker rather than a particular language, so a setup recording in one language can be used with Voice Access in another.
