If Virus & threat protection is missing, switched off, stuck scanning, showing old definitions, or displaying a warning that does not match what you can do, start by identifying which component failed. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, note the exact message and available controls, then follow the matching repair path below. Update Windows and Defender first, verify the core protection switches, check whether another antivirus provider is active, and only then move to service repair, an offline scan, or system recovery.

This order limits disruption and avoids damaging a security setup that is working under a different provider. Microsoft’s Windows Security documentation covers Windows 11 and Windows 10; labels can change slightly after feature updates.

What the Virus & threat protection page controls

Virus & threat protection is a dashboard inside the Windows Security app, not a single background switch. Its sections explain why different failures require different fixes:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • Current threats: shows recent scan results and offers quick, full, custom, and offline scan choices.
  • Virus & threat protection settings: contains Microsoft Defender controls such as real-time protection, cloud-delivered protection, and automatic sample submission when those controls are available.
  • Virus & threat protection updates: displays the security-intelligence version and lets you check for new definitions.
  • Ransomware protection: includes Controlled folder access and related safeguards.

A page that will not open is an app-interface problem. A page that opens but says another provider is managing protection is usually a provider-selection issue. A scan that stops, definitions that remain old, and a warning banner each need a different branch.

Classify the failure before changing settings

Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and record what you see. Do not disable policies or uninstall security software until you know which provider is active.

Prepare safely before repair

Keep the least disruptive path first. Save open work before restarting. If a later step could reset, restore, reinstall, or otherwise alter Windows, back up personal files before proceeding. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance specifically gives copying important files to a USB drive as an example. A backup protects documents and photos if malware or a failed repair causes irreversible changes.

  • Use an administrator account for service and command-line work.
  • Record the active antivirus name and the exact warning text.
  • Do not turn off Tamper Protection merely to make a command run; verify its state as Microsoft instructs.
  • Do not remove a security product until you know whether it is the provider currently protecting the device.

Step 1: update Windows and Defender security intelligence

Install pending Windows 11 updates

Open Settings > Windows Update, choose Check for updates, install everything offered, and restart when Windows requests it. Security components and the Windows Security interface are serviced through Windows updates, so this step can resolve both stale status information and component mismatches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows Update itself reports an error, Microsoft directs Windows 11 users to start with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Complete that diagnosis, restart if requested, and run Windows Update again.

Check Defender definitions manually

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Under Virus & threat protection updates, select Check for updates.
  4. Review Threat definitions after the check completes.

Microsoft says Defender definitions update automatically at least once every day, but a manual check is useful after a failed update, a long offline period, or a newly installed Windows build. If the definition date changes, restart and run the scan that previously failed. If it does not, treat the problem as an update failure rather than repeatedly starting scans.

Step 2: verify the protection switches

When Defender is the active provider, go to Virus & threat protection > Virus & threat protection settings > Manage settings. Check the switches that are present on your edition and device:

  • Real-time protection: should be on for continuous file and process monitoring.
  • Cloud-delivered protection: should be on when available. Cloud analysis helps identify previously unseen malware.
  • Automatic sample submission: should be on when available. Sending suspicious samples helps improve detection of new threats.

Microsoft identifies cloud-delivered protection and automatic sample submission as important complements to local detection. If a switch is greyed out or immediately reverts, another antivirus provider, an organization policy, or Tamper Protection may be controlling it. Do not force a policy change; identify the controlling authority first.

Step 3: check whether another antivirus provider is active

Windows Security can display and coordinate Microsoft Defender alongside third-party antivirus products. When another provider registers as active, Defender’s own controls may be unavailable by design. That situation is not the same as having no protection.

  1. In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, read the provider or management notice.
  2. Open the provider details if Windows offers a link, and note which product reports real-time protection.
  3. Open that provider’s own app and check its update date, real-time status, and scan controls.
  4. Only after confirming the replacement provider is uninstalled or disabled should you expect Microsoft Defender controls to return.

A work or school computer can also have security settings enforced by an administrator. In that case, contact the administrator rather than changing policy keys or attempting to bypass the control.

Step 4: repair the Windows Security interface

Use this branch when Windows Security will not open, the Virus & threat protection page is blank, or the interface is visibly corrupted while Windows itself is otherwise usable.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find Windows Security, open its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
  3. Select Repair. This attempts to fix the app without removing its data.
  4. Restart Windows and repeat the symptom classification and update checks.
  5. If the page is still unusable, return to the same screen and use Reset, understanding that the app’s local data and preferences may be cleared.

The Settings labels can vary by Windows 11 release. Repair is a practical Windows 11 remediation for an app-interface failure, not a guaranteed fix for a disabled Defender service or malware infection. If another provider is active, repairing the interface will not make Defender the active provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: repair a stopped Defender service with Microsoft’s commands

Use this branch only when the Defender service is reported as stopped or Defender will not start after updates and provider checks. Microsoft’s Defender service-startup guidance supplies two elevated Command Prompt procedures: one enables Defender and the other refreshes Security Intelligence.

  1. Sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Copy and run exactly: MpCmdRun.exe -WdEnable
  4. After the command completes, run: MpCmdRun.exe -SignatureUpdate -MMPC
  5. Close the terminal, restart Windows, and check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection again.
  6. Verify Tamper Protection as Microsoft instructs. Do not disable it as a workaround.

These commands are not a substitute for identifying a third-party provider. If another antivirus product owns real-time protection, enabling Defender can create a conflicting configuration. If the commands return an error, preserve the exact text and seek administrator or Microsoft support rather than guessing at policy edits.

Step 6: handle scans that stop or miss a recurring infection

Retry a normal scan after updating

Once Windows and threat definitions are current, return to Virus & threat protection > Current threats and choose the scan type that matches the situation. A quick scan is suitable for a rapid check; a full or custom scan is more appropriate when a specific drive, folder, or recurring alert needs examination. Keep the computer connected to power and avoid shutting it down while the scan is running.

Run Microsoft Defender Offline

Use the offline scan when malware appears to interfere with normal Windows scans, a threat returns after removal, or the scan repeatedly stops without a clear software cause. Microsoft describes Defender Offline as a tool that works outside Windows, allowing it to catch and clean infections that hide while Windows is running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Save documents and close all applications.
  2. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
  3. Select Windows Defender Offline scan.
  4. Choose Scan now.
  5. Approve the restart and let the scan finish before signing back in.
  6. After Windows starts, return to Current threats to review the result.

The computer restarts for this scan, so unsaved work will be lost. Plan the restart and keep your backup available. Offline scanning is more disruptive than a normal scan but specifically addresses threats that hide during normal operation.

Step 7: recover Windows when malware or component damage persists

If the Windows Security page remains broken, Defender cannot start after provider and service checks, or malware has made irreversible changes, recovery may be necessary. Microsoft notes that a reset, restore, or reinstall can be required in serious cases.

  1. Back up personal files first, preferably to a USB drive or another storage location that is not left permanently connected.
  2. Record application installers, license information, and any recovery keys you will need after repair.
  3. Use the least destructive recovery option available for the condition: a restore point when a recent change caused the failure, a reset when Windows components are damaged, or a reinstall when the installation or infection cannot be trusted.
  4. After recovery, install Windows updates before restoring software, then verify Defender definitions and protection switches.

A reset or reinstall can remove applications and settings, and the exact choices determine whether personal files are retained. Read each Windows prompt carefully; do not begin without a verified backup.

Choose the remedy that matches the symptom

Remedy Best match Restart or disruption Administrator required Data-loss risk
Windows Update and Defender definition check Stale definitions, update warnings, unexplained status notices Usually one normal restart after installation No, unless Windows asks for elevation Low
Verify Manage settings Real-time, cloud, or sample-submission protection appears off None normally Usually no; policy may prevent changes Low
Identify active provider Defender controls unavailable or another antivirus is managing protection Depends on provider changes Often required to remove or change software Low if provider is confirmed first
Windows Security Repair or Reset App will not open, page is blank, interface is corrupted Restart recommended; Reset clears app data Usually no Low, but preferences can be removed
MpCmdRun.exe service and signature commands Defender service stopped after provider and update checks Normal restart Yes, elevated terminal Low when copied exactly
Defender Offline scan Recurring or hidden malware; normal scan interference Mandatory restart outside normal Windows Usually no, but approval is required Low to files; unsaved work is at risk
Restore, reset, or reinstall Persistent component damage or irreversible malware changes High; recovery can take substantial time Often yes Possible application, setting, or personal-file loss depending on option

Common failure patterns and what to do next

“Virus & threat protection is turned off”

First determine whether the message names Microsoft Defender or another provider. If Defender is active, check Manage settings and turn on real-time, cloud-delivered, and automatic sample submission protection where available. If another provider is named, check that product instead. A status message that persists after a successful update and restart should be treated as a reporting or provider-registration problem, not as proof that every protection layer is disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Threat service has stopped”

Install Windows and Defender updates, confirm no other provider owns protection, then use the elevated MpCmdRun.exe -WdEnable and MpCmdRun.exe -SignatureUpdate -MMPC procedures. Verify Tamper Protection and restart. Escalate with the command output if the service still will not start.

“Windows Defender scan stops”

Update definitions and retry after a restart. If the same infection or interruption returns, run Defender Offline because it scans outside normal Windows. Back up important files before any later reset or reinstall.

“Virus & threat protection is missing”

Install Windows updates, check whether a third-party provider is active, and repair Windows Security from Installed apps. If the entry remains absent, an administrator policy or damaged Windows installation may be responsible; avoid editing policy keys without qualified support.

“Windows 11 Defender won’t update”

Run Windows Update first, use the Get Help app’s automated Windows Update troubleshooter if Windows Update is failing, and then select Check for updates under Virus & threat protection updates. The daily automatic update behavior does not eliminate the need to investigate a persistent manual-update failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to stop troubleshooting locally

Seek qualified support when a managed device blocks changes, commands fail repeatedly, a second antivirus provider cannot be identified, malware returns after an offline scan, or recovery prompts indicate possible data loss. Preserve warning text, definition dates, command output, and scan results. Those details let an administrator or support technician distinguish an interface defect from provider control, update failure, service damage, or an active infection.
