To check whether Windows 11 has a real update for your PC, open Start > Settings > Windows Update. Use the update status and offers shown there rather than a browser pop-up or an unfamiliar download asking you to run an installer. Microsoft says updates can arrive at different times on eligible devices, so an update not appearing yet does not by itself mean a prompt is fake. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ
Check for an update in Windows Settings
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Review the status and any updates offered on that page. To check manually, select Check for updates if it is available.
- Install updates offered through Windows Update, following any restart instructions shown in Settings.
Windows 11 downloads and installs updates automatically, and Settings is the ordinary consumer route to check availability. Microsoft stages some rollouts, so eligible devices may not all receive an update at the same time. A delayed offer is not, on its own, evidence of fraud. Warning signs—and what they do not prove
- A page or app falsely claims to be Microsoft, hides what it will install, installs without clear consent, or uses alarming or coercive messages. Microsoft identifies these as behaviors associated with unwanted software.
- A claimed Windows release name or version number in a pop-up is not proof that the offer is genuine.
- SmartScreen can help protect against phishing and malicious websites, applications, and downloads, but a warning sign alone does not establish that a specific file is malicious.
Microsoft does not provide a universal visual checklist that authenticates every update-themed prompt. When in doubt, do not use the prompt as your verification method: return to Windows Update in Settings. SmartScreen’s documented protections and Microsoft’s criteria for unwanted software.

Investigate an activation or licensing notice through Microsoft’s genuine-Windows and activation guidance. Microsoft describes genuine Windows as software published by Microsoft, properly licensed, and supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. Activation associates a product key or digital entitlement with a device’s hardware. These checks concern licensing and activation; they do not independently authenticate a separate update prompt. If you already ran a suspicious installer
- Do not run the file again.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and start a scan.
- If unwanted software persists, use Microsoft Defender Offline as a next step. Follow the options available in Windows Security. Microsoft’s unwanted-software guidance.
- If you entered a password on a suspicious page, change that password from a trusted device.
When update behavior is controlled by work or school
On a PC managed by an employer or school, an administrator may control update policies and timing. If Windows Update looks different from what you expect or an update is delayed, ask the organization’s IT administrator before trying an external installer. Microsoft documents administrative control over Windows Update behavior; consumer instructions may not describe every managed device. Microsoft support guidance.
