Short answer: Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check to see whether a PC qualifies for Windows 11, but verify individual apps and accessories with their publishers or manufacturers. An update keeps the existing Windows version current; an upgrade moves the PC to a newer version. Restarts can usually be scheduled around your active hours, while recovery depends on whether a single update or the entire Windows version caused the problem.
Microsoft’s 2026 guidance also describes a gradually rolling-out combined-restart experience for eligible Windows 11 versions. It can make some monthly maintenance more predictable, but it does not guarantee one restart per month on every PC.
What is the difference between a Windows update and an upgrade?
A Windows update adds security fixes, reliability improvements, drivers, firmware, .NET components, or other changes to the Windows version already installed. Updates can be monthly quality updates, security intelligence updates, or other packages, and some require a restart to finish installation.

Moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is an upgrade, not merely another monthly update. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ says feature updates are typically released once per year, although the exact availability depends on the device and rollout policy.

This distinction matters when something goes wrong. A recently installed individual update can sometimes be uninstalled. A full version upgrade has a separate Go back recovery path with its own time limit and prerequisites.
How can I determine if my device qualifies for Windows 11?
Run PC Health Check
Microsoft recommends the PC Health Check app for a direct eligibility assessment. It checks whether the hardware and configuration meet Windows 11’s requirements and reports whether the device qualifies for the upgrade. Use the result as a device-level eligibility check, not as a guarantee that every program or peripheral will work.
Check Windows Update as a second signal
Windows Update also evaluates whether a particular Windows 10 installation is ready for Windows 11. If the upgrade is not offered, the device may be waiting for a compatibility safeguard, a staged rollout, or a requirement that has not yet been met. Do not force an upgrade solely because another PC has already received it.
Confirm software and accessory compatibility separately
Eligibility does not establish compatibility for every application, printer, scanner, audio interface, security tool, or other accessory. Microsoft directs users to the relevant software publisher or accessory manufacturer for product-specific confirmation. Check for a Windows 11-compatible release, current drivers, and any documented limitations before upgrading a work-critical system.
Could an upgrade remove an app?
Yes. Microsoft says some apps may be removed during an upgrade when they are known to cause upgrade problems or may not work correctly with Windows 11. Check the publisher’s documentation for an updated version instead of assuming that software which ran on an earlier Windows release will continue unchanged.
When will Windows 11 restart, and how can I control the timing?
Why a restart may be required
Windows can download and prepare an update while you work, but protected system files, drivers, firmware, and other components may not be replaceable until the operating system restarts. A restart can therefore be required even when the download and installation stages appeared to finish.

Set active hours
Active hours tell Windows when you normally use the PC so it can avoid automatic restarts during that interval when possible.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Open Active hours.
- Choose a manual interval, or let Windows adjust the hours from your device activity, depending on the options shown on your installation.
Active hours guide the timing; they do not remove the update and do not guarantee that a restart can be deferred indefinitely. Windows may still need to restart outside the selected interval to complete an important installation.
Restart immediately or schedule it for a convenient time
When an update is ready, Windows may show controls such as Restart now, Update and restart, or Update and shut down. Use the option that matches whether you want to finish immediately, restart while you are away, or power off after installation. Save open work first, because a restart can close applications.
What changed with the 2026 combined-restart rollout?
Microsoft’s article published August 14, 2026 says that updates released on and after July 28, 2026 can combine certain restart-requiring driver, .NET, and firmware updates with the monthly security update so eligible systems use a single restart. The described experience applies to Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, and is rolling out gradually.
This is not a universal “one restart every month” promise. Microsoft lists several exceptions: Defender security intelligence updates, AI component updates, critical or expedited drivers, emergency or out-of-band updates, and updates that do not need a restart. A PC that has not received the staged experience, or that receives an exceptional update, can behave differently.
Can I pause updates?
Windows Update includes a temporary pause control. Microsoft’s 2026 guidance describes pausing for up to 35 days on eligible devices in the gradually rolling-out experience. When the pause period ends, Windows checks for updates again. The exact duration and interface should therefore be treated as eligibility-dependent rather than a guarantee for every Windows 11 PC.

What should I check before upgrading?
- Run PC Health Check and review Windows Update’s eligibility result.
- Confirm that essential applications have a Windows 11-compatible version with the publisher.
- Check current drivers and firmware for hardware that is important to your work.
- Record any special settings or accounts you may need to recreate if an application is removed.
- Plan the installation for a period when a restart will not interrupt work, even if active hours are configured.
These checks reduce surprises, but they cannot predict every interaction among a particular PC model, driver, application, and update.
How do I remove an installed update that caused a problem?
If Windows still starts normally
- Open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update.
- Select Update history.
- Choose Uninstall updates.
- Select the relevant update and follow the confirmation prompts.
This route is for a problematic individual update, not for reversing an entire Windows version upgrade. Microsoft warns that some updates cannot be uninstalled. Removing a security update also creates a security exposure, so treat the step as troubleshooting rather than a permanent way to avoid patching.
If Windows cannot be accessed normally
- Enter the Windows Recovery Environment.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Open Advanced options.
- Choose Uninstall Updates.
- Select the available update-removal option and complete the prompts.
Microsoft’s uninstall guidance recommends trying to reinstall the current Windows version first on Windows 11 when that option is available. If you remove an update to regain stability, look for a corrected release or other supported fix rather than leaving the machine unpatched indefinitely.
How do I return to the previous Windows version?
Use Go back only after a version upgrade
Go back is for a recent Windows version upgrade, such as moving to Windows 11. It is not the same as uninstalling a monthly quality update. To check whether it is available, open Settings > System > Recovery and look for Go back.
Microsoft says that, in most cases, the option is available for 10 days after the upgrade. The button may disappear sooner if the required recovery files are removed or if another condition prevents the rollback.
What Go back keeps and removes
Going back keeps personal files, according to Microsoft’s support guidance. It removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made after the new version was installed. Review the list of affected programs and make sure you can reinstall anything you need before confirming.

Prerequisites that preserve the option
- Keep the
windows.oldfolder. - Keep the
$windows.~btfolder. - Remove user accounts created after the upgrade if Windows requires that before returning.
- If a USB drive was used to perform the upgrade, have that same installation drive available.
Deleting the recovery folders to reclaim disk space can eliminate the built-in rollback route. Personal files may remain, but the previous Windows installation itself can no longer be restored through Go back.
What if the 10-day period has ended?
After the normal rollback window, Microsoft says returning to the previous version requires manually backing up files and performing a clean installation. A clean installation is a different operation from Go back: it requires reinstalling applications, restoring data, and rebuilding settings. Confirm that you have installation media, activation information where applicable, and a complete backup before proceeding.

Common compatibility and rollback mistakes
Confusing eligibility with application support
A PC Health Check pass means the device meets Windows 11 eligibility criteria. It does not certify every application, driver, or accessory. Verify the products that matter most before starting the upgrade.
Using Go back to remove a monthly update
Go back reverses a version upgrade. For a single problematic update, use Update history and Uninstall updates, or the corresponding Windows Recovery Environment path.
Deleting rollback files too soon
The windows.old and $windows.~bt folders support the built-in return path. Removing them can make the 10-day option unavailable.

Assuming every PC receives the same restart pattern
The combined-restart behavior described by Microsoft is a gradual rollout for specific Windows 11 versions and update types. Critical, expedited, emergency, out-of-band, Defender, AI-component, and no-restart updates can follow different timing.
