If Windows 11 stops at UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME, start in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and try Startup Repair before considering reset or reinstall. The stop-code message is not, by itself, a confirmed diagnosis of what went wrong on your PC. Protect important files first, and have your BitLocker recovery key available if encryption is enabled.
Before you try a repair: protect files and check BitLocker
- Find your BitLocker recovery key if device encryption is enabled. Microsoft says the key is needed for most WinRE recovery options. Without it, you may be unable to use those tools.
- Consider your files before choosing a recovery option. Some options can cause data loss. Resetting or reinstalling Windows is more disruptive than trying built-in repair tools; reinstalling from installation media removes everything from the device.
- If you can still access Windows or your files by another route, back up important data before proceeding. If the files are irreplaceable and you cannot safely back them up, consider qualified local help before attempting a reset or reinstall.
Microsoft’s recovery options guidance recommends starting with the least disruptive appropriate choice and warns that recovery actions can affect data.
Step 1: Open Windows Recovery Environment
WinRE is Windows’ built-in recovery space, with automated and manual tools for startup problems. Windows may open it automatically after repeated failed starts. If it does not, use an available route below.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen Windows is still accessible
Open Settings > System > Recovery, then select Restart now beside Advanced startup. You can also hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart from the sign-in screen or Start menu.

When Windows will not start
Use a manufacturer recovery button or a recovery drive if your PC has one. You can also start the PC from Windows installation media. Select your language and other preferences, choose Next, then select Repair my PC to enter recovery rather than starting a Windows installation. See Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment instructions for the available entry methods.
Step 2: Run Startup Repair
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Select Restart if prompted, then follow the on-screen instructions.
Startup Repair checks for common problems that prevent Windows from starting and attempts to fix them. It is a sensible first repair to try, but Microsoft does not promise that it will resolve this particular stop code. If the tool cannot repair startup, it may provide a report. Microsoft describes the tool in its Startup Repair documentation.

Step 3: Choose the next option based on what changed
If Startup Repair does not get Windows running, use the timing of the failure to choose a less disruptive next step. These options are in WinRE under Troubleshoot > Advanced options; availability can vary by device and Windows version.
If the problem began after a Windows update
Select Uninstall Updates and follow the prompts. This is a relevant option when the boot failure started after an update; it is not a guaranteed fix, and you should not assume an update caused the error if the timing does not fit.

If a restore point is available
Select System Restore and choose a restore point from before the problem began, if one is offered. Microsoft also lists point-in-time restore for supported Windows 11 version 24H2-or-later setups; its availability depends on the system. Review the prompts before confirming a change.
If built-in repair options do not work
Reset this PC and reinstalling Windows are later, more disruptive choices. Read each screen carefully: the available choices can have different effects on personal files, and reinstalling Windows from installation media removes everything on the device. Back up what you can first and do not proceed if you cannot accept the stated data consequences. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explains the distinctions and cautions.

Why the stop code does not identify one certain fix
The available Microsoft guidance discusses stop-code errors generally; it does not establish the cause of UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME on a particular Windows 11 PC. Hardware, driver, and software problems can be associated with stop errors in general, but the message alone does not tell you which applies. For that reason, avoid treating any single command or diagnosis as certain based only on this screen. Microsoft’s general stop-code troubleshooting guidance does not provide a code-specific diagnosis here.
Quick Recap
When to get help
- If the PC is managed by your workplace or school, contact its IT department before resetting or reinstalling Windows.
- If recovery tools fail and you suspect a hardware problem, seek qualified local diagnosis.
- If important files are at risk and you do not have a backup, consider professional data-recovery help before choosing a destructive recovery option.
