If Windows 11 asks for a PIN or password when you approve a User Account Control (UAC) prompt, it is usually requesting authorization for an action that needs administrator-level access. A standard account must use credentials for an administrator account; an administrator normally approves the request, unless a local or work-or-school policy requires credentials instead. The prompt alone does not mean your Windows Hello PIN is broken.
Why Windows 11 asks for credentials at a UAC prompt
UAC is a Windows security checkpoint for changes that require administrator-level permissions. Windows asks you to approve or deny the action. What it asks for depends on the account signed in and the device’s security policy.
Microsoft Learn describes the default for a standard user this way: “The default, built-in UAC elevation component for standard users is the credential prompt.” In practice, that user must enter valid credentials for an administrator account. An administrator running in Admin Approval Mode normally sees a consent prompt to approve or deny the action, but policy can make administrators enter credentials too. The prompt may appear on the secure desktop; Microsoft recommends keeping that elevation setting enabled. See Microsoft’s explanation of how UAC works.
Identify which situation applies
| Signed-in account | Typical UAC prompt | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Standard user | Credentials for an administrator account | Enter credentials for an authorized administrator, or ask that administrator to approve the action. |
| Administrator in Admin Approval Mode | Consent to approve or deny | Approve only if you recognize and intend the change. |
| Administrator subject to a credential policy | Administrator credentials | Use the authorized credentials; on a managed device, check with IT if you cannot proceed. |
To check the account type, open Settings > Accounts and review the account information. Microsoft explains account types and their permissions in Manage User Accounts in Windows. A standard account is appropriate for everyday use; administrators have broad control over the device, so Microsoft recommends limiting how many people have administrator accounts.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
What to do when the prompt appears
- Read the prompt. Confirm what app or change is requesting elevation. If you did not start the action or do not recognize it, choose No or cancel rather than approving it.
- Check whether the signed-in account is standard or administrator. A standard account is expected to need an administrator’s credentials for elevated actions.
- On a personal device, use the authorized administrator account. If you do not know its password or other required credentials, ask the device’s administrator. UAC is designed to require that authorization; do not use unofficial tools or bypasses.
- On a work- or school-managed device, contact IT. Group Policy or device-management settings can determine how UAC behaves. Do not try to override organizational controls.
A Windows Hello PIN is not the same as an administrator password
A Windows Hello PIN is a sign-in option associated with the device. It is distinct from your Microsoft account password, and resetting it addresses sign-in—not missing administrator authorization. Microsoft’s pages on Windows Hello and changing or resetting a Windows PIN explain those options.
If you have forgotten the PIN you use to sign in, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and use the available PIN reset option. If UAC still requests administrator credentials afterward, you need an authorized administrator to approve the action; a PIN reset does not grant administrator rights.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Should you lower or disable UAC?
UAC settings are security controls, not a general fix for a missing password or PIN. Windows provides notification options through the User Account Control settings page, and administrators can configure more detailed behavior through policy. Microsoft documents those options in UAC settings and configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not disable UAC or configure elevation to happen without prompting just to avoid a credential request. Microsoft describes “Elevate without prompting” as suitable only for highly constrained environments. Keep the secure-desktop elevation setting enabled. If a policy appears to be preventing an expected action, ask the administrator or your organization’s IT team to review it rather than weakening protections yourself.
