Windows 11 can circle your mouse pointer whenever you press the Ctrl key. The control is a built-in checkbox in Mouse Properties > Pointer Options > Visibility; you do not need an app or another product. Check Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key to enable the circle, clear it to disable the circle, and select OK to save.
What the Ctrl mouse indicator does
Microsoft describes this feature as a fast way to find the mouse pointer “by circling it when you hit the CTRL key on the keyboard.” The circle is a temporary location cue: it appears when you press Ctrl and is not a permanent ring around the pointer. Microsoft’s official checkbox wording is Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key, although people often search for it as a “mouse indicator,” “mouse circle,” or “find my mouse pointer with Ctrl.”
This option changes only the pointer-location cue. It does not enlarge the pointer, change its color, or alter the pointer’s normal shape. Those persistent appearance choices are separate Windows 11 accessibility settings.
Microsoft documents the Windows 11 route in its Change mouse settings support article.

Turn on the mouse circle when you press Ctrl
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices, then choose Mouse.
- Scroll to Related settings and select Additional mouse settings. Windows opens the classic Mouse Properties dialog.
- Open the Pointer Options tab.
- In the Visibility section, select the checkbox labeled Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key.
- Select OK to apply the change and close the dialog.
After saving, press the Ctrl key while the pointer is on screen. Windows should briefly circle the pointer so you can locate it. The setting does not keep a circle visible between key presses.
Turn off the Ctrl pointer circle
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
- Under Related settings, select Additional mouse settings.
- In Mouse Properties, select Pointer Options.
- Under Visibility, clear Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key.
- Select OK.
Clearing the checkbox removes the Ctrl-triggered location cue. It does not reset any other pointer options, and it does not change the pointer’s size, style, or color.
Check that the setting was saved
The checkbox is stored in the classic Mouse Properties dialog, not directly on the main Mouse page. If you close the dialog without selecting OK, reopen the same path and check the box state before testing.

- Enabled: the checkbox contains a check mark; pressing Ctrl produces the temporary circle.
- Disabled: the checkbox is clear; pressing Ctrl does not invoke this circle.
- Wrong place: pointer size, color, and style controls under Accessibility do not switch this feature on or off.
Use the exact Pointer Options tab and Visibility section. Other tabs in Mouse Properties control different mouse behavior and are not the location of this option.
If the circle does not appear
Work through the documented path again rather than changing unrelated mouse settings:
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings.
- Select Pointer Options and confirm that Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key is checked.
- Select OK; then press Ctrl again to test.
- If the circle is unwanted, clear the box and select OK so the disabled state is saved.
Windows labels can vary slightly between releases and builds. Microsoft’s current support documentation covers both Windows 11 and Windows 10, but the Windows 11 route is the one that begins with Bluetooth & devices > Mouse. Do not substitute the older Windows 10 path, Settings > Devices > Mouse, when following Windows 11 instructions. If your screen uses a slightly different label, look for Additional mouse settings and then the Pointer Options tab in Mouse Properties.

Ctrl-triggered circle versus a pointer that is always easier to see
Windows 11 has two different ways to improve pointer visibility. Choose the one that matches how you lose track of the pointer:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Option | When it acts | What changes | Where to configure it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key | Only when you press Ctrl | A temporary circle highlights the pointer’s current location | Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings > Pointer Options > Visibility |
| Mouse pointer and touch appearance controls | Continuously; the selected appearance remains in use | Changes pointer size and pointer style or color | Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch |
The first option is useful when the pointer is usually fine but disappears among windows and you want an on-demand locator. The second is appropriate when you need the pointer itself to remain more visible without pressing a key. They can be configured independently; changing pointer size or color does not enable the Ctrl circle.
Microsoft explains the persistent appearance controls in Make your mouse, keyboard, and other input devices easier to use.

Choosing the right visibility method
Use the Ctrl circle for occasional searches
Enable the checkbox if you normally like your current pointer but sometimes cannot see where it is. The cue appears on demand and leaves the normal pointer appearance unchanged between presses. This is also the least disruptive choice when a permanently larger or differently colored pointer would be distracting.
Use pointer size, style, or color for continuous visibility
Open Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch when the pointer is routinely difficult to distinguish. These controls change the pointer’s appearance persistently, so you do not have to remember to press Ctrl. They are separate from the location circle and should be adjusted there rather than in Mouse Properties.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use both when necessary
A larger or contrasting pointer can improve everyday visibility, while the Ctrl-triggered circle can provide an extra momentary cue during complex work. Enabling one does not automatically enable the other, so configure each control explicitly if you want both behaviors.

Why the Windows 11 path matters
Windows retains the classic Mouse Properties dialog even though the modern Settings app is the normal starting point. That is why the procedure moves from Settings to Bluetooth & devices, then to Additional mouse settings, before the checkbox becomes visible. Searching only the modern Mouse page can make the option appear to be missing when it is actually in the legacy dialog.
Microsoft’s support page covers Windows 11 and Windows 10 together, so instructions written for both versions may show different first-level Settings categories. On Windows 11, begin with Bluetooth & devices; do not use Devices as the navigation label unless you are following Windows 10 documentation on a Windows 10 installation.
Common misunderstandings
- It is not a permanent circle: the indicator is shown in response to pressing Ctrl, then returns to the normal pointer display.
- It is not a separate “Mouse Indicator” app: the capability is part of Windows and is controlled by the checkbox in Mouse Properties.
- It is not the same as pointer magnification: size, style, and color are configured under Accessibility, not under the Visibility checkbox.
- It is not enabled by changing unrelated pointer options: stay on Pointer Options > Visibility for this specific behavior.
Quick reference
| Goal | Action |
|---|---|
| Show a circle around the pointer when Ctrl is pressed | Check Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key, then select OK. |
| Stop the circle | Clear the same checkbox, then select OK. |
| Keep the pointer larger or use another color | Open Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch and adjust the persistent appearance controls. |
The key detail is the location of the checkbox: Mouse Properties > Pointer Options > Visibility. Once you know that path, enabling or disabling the Ctrl mouse indicator takes only a few selections and an OK click.
