To make Windows 11’s translucent, blurred surfaces more opaque, turn off Transparency effects in Settings. It may also help responsiveness on some PCs, but Microsoft’s general guidance about visual effects does not establish a measurable speed gain from this specific toggle.
What Windows 11 transparency effects change
Transparency effects let parts of the Windows interface appear slightly see-through, with acrylic blur behind them. Switching them off makes those surfaces more opaque; it does not change the underlying hardware or install anything.
Microsoft describes the setting and its effect in its Windows accessibility guidance and personalization guidance.

How to turn off transparency effects
- Open Settings > Personalization > Colors.
- Turn off Transparency effects.
There is also an Accessibility route: open Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects and switch off Transparency effects. Microsoft documents both routes. Choose whichever is easier to find on your PC.

Does turning transparency off make Windows 11 faster?
It might help responsiveness in some circumstances, but there is no established percentage or benchmark for the isolated effect of this switch. Microsoft says Windows 11 visual effects can use system resources and that adjusting them can improve responsiveness. That is general guidance about visual effects, not a guarantee that disabling transparency will produce a noticeable speed increase.
The August 29, 2026 Yahoo Tech reproduction of the matching article characterizes any performance change from transparency as small and unlikely to be noticeable on modern hardware. Treat that as an author’s assessment, not a controlled test across PCs.

Transparency or animation: which should you change?
These are separate settings, so you can change either one without disabling the other. Transparency controls the look of surfaces; animation controls motion during interface transitions.

| Transparency effects | Translucent acrylic blur becomes more opaque. | Settings > Personalization > Colors, or Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects. | Microsoft gives general guidance that visual effects use resources; no quantified, isolated result for this toggle is established. |
| Animation effects | Interface transitions use less motion. | Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects > Animation effects. | No quantified, isolated benchmark for this toggle is established. |
Microsoft presents disabling animation as a way to minimize visual distractions. If reduced motion is your priority, try Animation effects; if you prefer a less translucent interface, try Transparency effects. Any perceived improvement in snappiness is subjective.

How to adjust visual effects more selectively
Windows also provides individual visual-effect controls for people who want to keep some effects while changing others. Search for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, open the result, and use the Visual Effects tab. The Adjust for best performance option applies a broad preset, so inspect the individual controls if you want to retain selected effects.
Quick Recap
A simple way to decide whether the change helps
- Note how the interface looks and how responsive it feels before changing anything.
- Turn off one setting—transparency or animation—rather than both at once.
- Use Windows as usual and decide whether the visual trade-off is worthwhile.
- If you dislike the result, return to the same setting and turn it back on.
