To change taskbar size in Windows 11, go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors > Taskbar size and choose Small or the standard size. There is no separate consumer Settings switch that turns the ability to change size on or off. On managed PCs, administrators can use policies, but the newer size-specific policy is currently listed for Windows Insider Preview.
Change the taskbar size in Settings
- Open Settings by pressing Windows key + I.
- Select Personalization, then Taskbar.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors if it is collapsed.
- Open Taskbar size.
- Choose Small to reduce both icon size and taskbar height. Choose the standard size option to restore the usual dimensions. Microsoft’s KB5120998 notes, dated August 27, 2026, describe the Small option for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2.
Why the Taskbar size control may be missing
Microsoft describes the feature as a gradual rollout for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. If the control does not appear, check your Windows version and whether the relevant update has reached the PC. An eligible version may not yet have received the rollout; the missing control alone does not establish that something is broken.
The earlier Show smaller taskbar buttons option is not the same setting. In an August 2025 Office Hours response, Microsoft described it as reducing icons when the taskbar is full or keeping smaller icons all the time. The newer Taskbar size option also reduces the height of the taskbar. Check Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information for version details; the current feature description is in the KB5120998 notes.
Can you disable the ability to change taskbar size?
For a personal PC, the cited user-facing documentation describes choosing a size, not a separate switch to prevent future changes. If you simply want the normal taskbar again, select the standard size option in Settings.

On managed devices, Microsoft documents two policies with different scope and applicability. Do not assume the older resize policy necessarily disables the newer Taskbar size control.
Prevent users from resizing the taskbar
The Group Policy setting is User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar > Prevent users from resizing the taskbar. Microsoft says enabling it prevents users from resizing the taskbar, but the policy documentation does not establish that it locks the newer Taskbar size setting. DisableTaskbarSize policy
Microsoft’s Start Policy CSP documents DisableTaskbarSize specifically for the newer size control. Value 1 sets the taskbar to its default size and grays out the size setting in Settings; 0 permits user changes; and 65535 leaves the policy unconfigured and permits user changes. The applicability entry currently lists Windows Insider Preview, so verify Microsoft’s applicability information for your edition and build before relying on it for stable Windows 11. Microsoft describes Group Policy management for Active Directory–joined and Microsoft Entra hybrid-joined devices, and notes that local Group Policy can be used on devices that are not domain joined. Administrators should validate the relevant policy against the device’s edition and build before deployment. Microsoft’s Group Policy overview explains the management options.
