If your Windows 11 taskbar controls are misplaced after enabling Taskbar Position with ViVeTool, the first cautious step is to undo that experimental flag using the same tool, then restart Windows. That is a troubleshooting sequence—not a confirmed fix: the forum report matching this problem does not say whether the suggested steps worked. The symptoms were reported on build 26220.9223 and do not establish a general Windows 11 defect.
What happened in the reported Windows 11 case?
In an ElevenForum thread, an MSI laptop owner said they enabled the Taskbar Position feature with vivetool.exe /enable /id:59213768 and then saw different problems depending on where the taskbar was placed. The account is one user’s report; it does not establish how common the problem is or prove that the flag alone caused it.
| Taskbar position | Reported behavior |
|---|---|
| Bottom | Action Center would not open, although Wi-Fi worked. Thumbnail and hidden-icon menus appeared at the top. |
| Top | Action Center opened, but Wi-Fi did not work. Thumbnails disappeared, and the hidden-icon menu remained at the top. |
The thread’s question was whether there was a way to reset taskbar behavior. The report does not confirm that any proposed reset resolved the issue. Read the forum discussion.

It depends on the Windows build and rollout. Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 KB5120998 preview release notes say users can choose bottom, top, left, or right under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors > Taskbar position. Microsoft describes it this way: “You can now choose whether the taskbar appears at the bottom, top, left, or right side of your screen.” The notes also say the search box and smaller taskbar are supported only at the top and bottom, and that the update is rolling out gradually, so the setting may not yet appear on every device.

That official Settings path is different from enabling a feature ID with ViVeTool. Microsoft’s documentation of the setting does not confirm that the experimental flag caused the forum user’s symptoms or that disabling it will fix them. A May 15, 2026 Windows Insider Blog post described an earlier Experimental-channel release in which auto-hide and the tablet-optimized taskbar were not yet supported in alternate positions. Those are dated preview caveats, not proof of current limitations on later builds.
What should you try first?
- Check your Windows build. Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition, version, and OS build. These details help establish whether your PC is on a preview build and whether it should expose the supported Taskbar Position setting. Microsoft’s taskbar guide covers standard customization, not diagnosis of this flag-related report.
- Confirm whether you enabled the ViVeTool flag. If you did not, do not run a ViVeTool command just because the symptoms look similar. This report concerns a particular flag and build, not every taskbar malfunction.
- If you intentionally enabled it and know how you ran ViVeTool, consider disabling that same flag. A forum reply suggests
vivetool.exe /disable /id:59213768, followed by a restart. ViVeTool’s documentation explains the utility and command pattern; it does not validate this ID for every build or establish that the command fixes this problem. Use the matching ViVeTool setup you used to enable the flag, and do not treat this community suggestion as a Microsoft-supported remedy. - After restarting, check for updates and the supported setting. Use Settings > Windows Update to check for updates, then look under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors for Taskbar position. Its availability can depend on the device’s build and rollout.
When should you avoid deeper resets?
The forum reply also suggested clearing shell caches, resetting Shell Experience Host and Start Menu Experience Host packages, trying a newer Canary build, or performing an in-place repair install. The thread does not report a successful result from any of these steps. Cache deletion and package resets can affect more than taskbar position, while installing a preview build or running a repair install is a larger change than reversing a feature flag.

If the taskbar is still malfunctioning after the low-impact checks, seek guidance specific to your Windows build before attempting those broader changes. Do not assume that a package reset or cache deletion is necessary—or that it will help—based on this single report.
